Most Wanted Driver Testing 2018

Recommended Posts

I am beyond excited to see how the testing shakes out for the 2018 Most Wanted Driver. Not that I am going to replace my G400, because my wife might skin me if I did, but more to see how well it shakes out against the competition. I really think it is going to do well, and I am excited to see how the Max compares.

What driver are you guys looking forward to seeing testing results from the most?

I'm looking forward to how well the Cobra F8 compares to the rest.   The new Titleist driver is of interest and the Callaway Rogue felt solid when I hit it at DSG.

I'm curious to see how it does but I honestly am not expecting much from it. Seems a little too Golf Channel infomercial to me. But they did submit for testing so it may surprise me.

I am looking forward on how the F8+ shakes out in the hour & hours of testing too.

Seems like lots of folks on here have gotten F8 drivers or fairway woods recently. I am interested to see how it does as well. Hoping it comes out “just” behind the G400 so I don't have any second guesses of my purchase!

The only Cobra driver I have had was an LTD Pro and it was a dud for me quite frankly. Might have been a shaft issue though because that was back when I was trying miserably to self diagnose what kind of shaft my swing needed.

... The truth is most every OEM makes great drivers today. I am a big Cobra fan but also just didn't get along with the LTD and on paper it should have been perfect for me. The Fly Z, again on paper not a perfect fit, was so much more accurate and provided a consistent trajectory and flight even if it spun a little too much for ideal. I am always a little skeptical of any conglomerate club testing because all that matters is what someone says that has a swing similar to mine. A short quick 115 mph swing that spins a ton and needs a low launch low spin head and shaft is about the polar opposite of my swing as is a 90 mh over the top cut swing that needs a draw bias and softer shaft. That said, there are universal truths like the G400, M4, Rogue and F8 are very forgiving for any golfer but then spin and trajectory play a role in finding which one is best for your swing and whether or not you need the F8+, Rogue Sub Zero or G400 LST. And sound/feel reviews can be beneficial as well to avoid "explosive" sounding or "dead" sounding that can rule out a club before even hitting one. Sumo SQ is a great example, as I could not have played that club even if performance was perfect. I have heard younger players say the same thing about the Epic as it felt "dead" to them when I loved the sound/feel.

... For me at least, the F8's were the clear winners at the the show this year but the M series, Rogue's and G400's were not far behind and personal preference plays a huge role in picking one over the other.

Did not play the LTD, been gaming the Fly Z Plus since it came out.

It's irrelevant which driver wins or which beats your current driver. What you need to look at is how it performs for a golfer with a similar profile to yours. That's how you get your starting point.

There is no single best club for everyone.

I'm always curious when the newest Most Wanted 20xx comes out each year. This year will be no different.

However....

I'd like to see some testing matching up for example; the 2015 Fly-Z+ against a Epic SZ or the latest from Titleist or Ping, etc. Perhaps I've missed events/tests like this before but I don't recall any. Personally I see great value in doing something like this. Could it be possible that a top Most Wanted Driver from a few years ago still holds it's own or even beats the latest and greatest?

As everyone knows... it's a no-brainer to buy (sometimes even brand new*) drivers that are a couple of years old for 2/3 less $$ or more than when they were new.

(*I've recently purchased for under $100 each a brand new 2014 SLDR and a brand new 2015 Cobra Fly-Z+)

I'm fitted for my driver and very happy with it, but curious how the testing shakes out. I always like seeing the results to compare against my own judgments and experience.Just making golf equipment conversation on a golf equipment forum. The overall testing might be irrelevant per se but the swing speed related breakdowns definitely have merit. I do agree that there is no single best club for everyone though.

I personally got fit for the M4 but hit most of the drivers on this list. I'll tell you it's all in the shaft. I think we all could get fit for any driver as long as the shaft fits that head and your swing. It will be very interesting to see. My top 3 are as follows. Titleist 917, Taylormade M4 & Callaway Rouge. Those will be the top 3. And each swing category will be slightly different

Thank you! I'm admittedly no expert, but this has been my feeling/opinion forever. The shaft is the most important.

To those who said the shaft is most important that's not entirely true.

The golfer is most important followed by the shaft and head - the head matters, there are different CGs on all of them and that will have an impact as will the loft.

MGS did a test a few years back and found that both the head and shaft mattered.

I do agree that all of the OEMs make very good drivers. Some will fit a certain player profile better than others.

I'm hoping that Ping wins the test

As a club junkie I Always enjoy this list. I didn't do a ton of testing this year because I instantly fell in love live the G400 LST. I had the F8+ pre-ordered and cancelled my order once I hit the G400. The feel and sound were perfect and the performance was great I couldn't see anything giving me much improvement in performance and feel as good as the G400. I have thought about getting a G400 Max but this LST is so forgiving its not necessary.

My List is.

Lot of 400 Love in that list! I say one ends up in your bag before the season is very far along!

It is possible. I have hit them a lot and compared the 400 and the max a bunch of times. I need to do a head to head with my current driver and try out some of the other shafts that are available. It definitely won't be an impulse purchase, I will think it to death.

Tested the G400 and the Gmax yesterday. Both felt great, but the G400 was the winner.

I did the same a week or so ago. I really liked the sound of both of them compared to my G-Series. That brute of mine has one hell of a report to it and I'm glad these newer offerings from PING sound much better to me. I'd trade out of my G in a second for a G400 SFT based on sound alone.

I had a little incident with my driver this weekend and so used my friend's G30 LST. That reduced spin is really the ticket. I hit a couple of crappy drives that ended up right around where I would have expected a flushed one to finish. If that's a precursor to the G400 LST I will have to give it a shot.

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD
