Kor.A.Door
This past weekend I played in a 4 club tournament. You pick 4 clubs from your bag and that's what you use for the round. Any 4 clubs, and only 4 clubs. You choose. I chose 3wd, 7 iron, PW, and putter. The course played at about 6400 yards. I chose the right clubs by the way, but what I found as I think back about the round is the clubs that I would normally use for a shot, but didn't have the club. You have to figure out what to do. What it does is it takes the thinking out of what club to use, you only have 4, tee shots, 3wd. 190 yards 7 iron. You have to play what you have. I think I only chose the wrong club to hit a couple times and that was mostly shorter shots. I think if I would have used 7 iron instead of PW a few times the result may have been better. The result was that my score was 82, but the issue was that I 3 putted 6 times, and I also missed a couple short birdie putts that cost me a few more. If you get a chance to play a round of golf with just a few clubs, try it, it really makes you think about the club choices that you would make when you have a full bag. It makes you learn to hit something harder to get more out of a club, but you also have to take some off at times to make it shorter. It's really eye opening as to what you can do when you have to. 00sportsman
True story: when I was much younger, I had a friend whose father carried a 3w, 7 iron and putter. That's it. A couple of golf balls and tees in his pocket, and those clubs in his hand. No bag. I was too little to remember, but my father tells me he was one of the best and most consistent players at our local 9 hole. I've wondered many times if I should cut back on the number of clubs I carry, and work on hitting about half as many really well. Peaksy68
A group I play with used to have a 3 club challenge, no putters allowed. The winner usually came in on or just outside playing to handicap. I practiced playing 9 at my course and had 3 over with 3 wood, 7 iron and 54 wedge. I based my club selection mainly on the par 3's, and being able to hit bump and runs with the 7 to fill gaps. 849 Pro Evenflow Riptide 6.0 F8 3 & 5 Woods Project X Evenflow Blue 6.0 TS2 7 Wood Project X Evenflow Blue 6.0 MP18 MMC - Project X LZ 5.5 Zipcore Wedges 50,54,58 - Project X LZ 5.5 MLA Tour Mallet 33" Z Star Pioneer bag buggy

Flipper554
Not sure if this is still a thing but once upon a time they sold beginner sets that just had the odd numbered irons, two woods and a putter. Kenny B
Wow! Lots of big hitters!! I'm jealous. For me it all depends on the length of the par 3's; they would dictate my two middle clubs, but I am definitely taking driver and putter. The other two would likely be 5H and 9i. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

GolfJunkie302
Love these types of tournaments! Obviously, it depends on the course, but typically, this is how it would go down: 3W - 220 7i - 155 9i - 135 54° - 105 My putting is so bad right now that I'm no worse off putting with a 3W. Peanut05
I would have to take a 3w (since I can't hit my driver off the deck well at all), 6 iron, 54 degree wedge, and putter. I should be able to take care of the majority of the shots with those clubs. I've played in a 3 club tournament before and took all of those except the putter and didn't play well at all, so I don't know how I would do if I got to take the putter too. TWar
Possibly would depend on the par 3's but I think I would go with 5wd 7i / 8i 48* Putter I like the 5wd bc it would give most any par4 a solid shot with at most a 7i. Would be more consistent and fly higher and land softer than the 3wd/dr. Either 7i or 8i depending on the par 3's but would possibly lean to an 7i. PW & Putter are self explanatory.
