DIY chipping game

I've seen some versions of tailgate chipping games similar to cornhole, or bags, or other names depending on where you're from but I was wondering if anyone has had tried to build one themselves? I've seen some nice handmade versions on sites like etsy, but if its easy enough and cheaper I was thinking of taking a crack at making my own. Any tips on materials or plans? What works, what doesn't?

I have thought about doing this as well. I might suggest using these for the balls so u can play in a variety of areas and not be as worried.

Seems like this would be a fun and fairly easy project.  Need some 2x4's for the frame and legs, maybe 1/2" MDF or plywood for the surface.  Some netting for the holes and some sort of carpet or fake grass for the surface to kill the bounce.

We use empty plastic buckets set up in a group, each bucket has a point value from 1-5. First one to 25 wins. Usually set up outdoors at about 15 yds, I guess you could also use wiffle or foam balls if the surroundings dictate.

Hopefully this link works, if it does this is one of set ups I've seen. I imagine just about any hole layout could be made. Hopefully it will make it on my list of summer projects that actually get done!

I agree you would need the fake grass, especially if you go with the whiffle balls and not foam. Easiest would be created a box out of 2x4 with bolts through the legs to set up. Plywood screwed onto it with the fake grass glued on top. Should be able to build a set for about $50 max I would think. I debated making this as well, as something different to mess around with.

I looked into building something myself and ended up just buying 2 cheap fold up chipping nets. The place I bought them from threw in 6 of those indoor balls free when I bought the nets.

Something like this would be pretty cool for chipping. Just lessen the slope severity, widen the holes (so they touch), raise the sides, and voila! You could use a putting mat as a runway for bump and runs or just use a square piece of turf as an island to chip from.

 

All of those changes would make it easier to travel with as well.

Update: It is in progress! I found a basic guide for design on reddit and am part way done. Board size is 24x40 inches with 9 in. diameter for the large hole and 6 in for the smaller ones. Hoping to complete it this weekend and will update again when I finish!
