Wild dunes is a picutesque ocean side course that is highly regarded. The Harbor course there is supposed to be solid. If the area has a "hidden gem" it's probably the Links at Stono Ferry. Patriots Point is supposed to be good too. If you're considering going to Kiawah Island, the Ocean Course is a true bucket list course with beauty, challenge and fun. The other courses at Kiawah are supposed to be great also. All the Kiawah courses are very expensive. Neighboring Seabrook Island has two great courses also (crooked tree and ocean breeze i think), these maybe tied to their resort. Have a great time, south carolina golf is the best.

My parents live just across the Cooper in Mt. Pleasant. Can't go wrong with Kiawah. I played one of their courses years ago (can't remember the name, obviously not the Ocean) and it was great.

Other than that, I've only played Charleston National and Dunes West (my dad's course). Both are good. Dad likes Patriot's Point and Rivertowne. Try to get on Bulls Bay if you can. Maybe you'll see Darius Rucker ;)

I have been doing my research and heard good things about Stono Ferry and Patriots Point. I think I will save Kiawah Ocean course for when I drop my index below 20...so I may be waiting awhile lol

I've played Patriots Point a couple times. Good course, not great. Maintenance could be a little better. Few really cool holes. Think 17(?) is par 3 with green basically in the harbor, great view of Fort Sumpter. Definitely worth playing. Kiawah, etc are a ways from Charleston, just FYI.

I played patriots point a few years ago. Nice, fun course.. nothing spectacular but a good course right on the bay.. Like MGOBLUE said they have a par 3 that is basically in the bay. They also have gators. I didn't see any but the guy behind me asked if I saw the one in the pond on 11 or 12 I think..

The Ocean Course at Kiawah is a must. I enjoyed both courses at Wild dunes and Seabrook Ocean Winds was a fun track.

Haven't read through all these, but wanted to toss you my two cents:

Caledonia Fish and Golf is a fantastic experience. Obviously conditions can differ based on time of year and subsequent weather, but it was in phenomenal shape when I played it August of 2014.

Ralston Creek at Daniel Island is a quality layout as well and a beast from all the way back (you got any masochist in ya?)

Ended up playing Stono Ferry, Charlston National and both courses at Wild Dunes

Not a bad track amoung them! Charlston National was the not so "hidden gem" ago those. Back nine was a delight.

All in all a great trip....Pro tip: eat at Poogans BBQ and get the skillet corn bread with smoked butter.
