Man I've got the fever. The Master's is getting closer every minute and I'm more excited for this one than I have in a while. Between the Big Cat, Fantasy Golf, and the AWESOME WILSON CONTEST, the anticipation has been killing me. That's what makes this list so fun.

8) Limited Commercial Breaks is my favorite. The Master's has so much pull they can limit the junk that takes away from golf. Even better, is the fact that you can watch all day for all 4 days thanks to the ESPN coverage. As someone who just dropped Golf channel, that's like manna from heaven.

So what's your favorite reason why the Master's is the greatest sporting event?

It's right across the state  here in Georgia.   I love the fact that Georgia has a tournament of this statue in our state.  The cool thing is we get to have it every year in the same special place.    I lived in Augusta for thirteen years and it's a cool host city!

Sorry - I love the Master's but this is beyond hyperbolic. We are watching one of the top sporting events in the NCAA tournament. Part of what makes it great is that teams that are capable of winning aren't excluded.

Fifty plays guys that could win the Masters are excluded.

The course, the Tradition, the time of year among other things make the Master's great. It is arguably the best Golf event in the world - the time of year helping that.

But beyond nuts like us it's not that big a deal.

It's not the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World series, the Stanley Cup or the Kentucky Derby.

It is definitely better than the Super Bowl.

Not anywhere near as commercialized as any of those other events.

Maybe the Kentucky Derby is around the same sort of traditional feel.

The rest of them... I respectfully disagree.

Sports had turned into a giant marketing ploy. That's why I like the Masters so much. Sure the players wear their sponsors on the sleeve. But the event itself doesn't come of as an ad like the rest of the stuff.

Even college football was officially ruined this year with a half time show at the NC.

I'm not into basketball, I'm sure it is great.

It's fine to disagree Shankster - I have little doubt that the Master's would be the favorite among this group - heck I'm arguing against it even though it's possibly mine.

My point is that it is decidedly not even close among the general public.

I'd argue that it is incredibly commercialised, it's just that Augusta National control the commercialisation.

Caddies having to wear overalls seems a bit of a throwback, seems a bit like "those caddies better know their place"

Don't get me wrong, I love the Masters, but the tradition aspect is a bit contrived to me. The whole handing over the jacket in the cabin business seems a bit disrespectful of the paying fans (sorry, patrons)

Agree with revkev, any major should be all the best golfers, not just those who Augusta National invite.

My favourite tournament is The Open Championship (another contrivance, and a bit arrogant in my mind) The variation in courses, the impact of the weather, the strength of the fields put it slightly in front for me.

I'd be curious as to how other large sporting events would be viewed down under. Kentucky Derby, Super Bowl, Olympics, Stanley Cup, those sorts of things. Also what are the major events in Australia?

I almost never watch the Olympics but I know they are huge, way bigger deal than the Masters. What is most popular for folks in your neck of the woods Peaksy?

Out of curiosity I looked at some TV ratings from last year, the Kentucky Derby drew more viewers than the final round of the Masters. No comparison between things like a World Series or Super Bowl and College Football Championship and the Masters.

When you read the list mentioned in the article it shouts everything that creates a negative stigma about golf among those who don't play or watch it.

I love the Masters, it's probably my favorite tournament to watch in my favorite sport. Still it might not make my own personal top five events each year. I doubt it cracks the top ten of the general public's.

If I'm being candid, the title of the article would be more correct had that just stopped at ".....why the Master's is great." Then you'd be cooking with peanut oil.

Don't get me wrong, the Master's is a really really really awesome event that I would never miss and always provides great drama BUT I still actually enjoy the US Open more. I love the fact that the US Open is the hardest course they'll play all year. I love the fact that the winner is one of the few guys that manages to break par. I also love the Fox broadcast. They always bust out the great visual tools to make it a more enjoyable watch.

Quick counter point about the limited Master's field: part of the mystery and greatness about the Master's is it's so hard to get in. Both as a participant and as a "patron." You have to prove your worth before you're ever allowed through the gates. Then if you make the most of your opportunity, you get to come back.

I'd gladly take a year full of Masters than 2 weeks worth of the WM Open.

Maybe you'd meant that the other way? eg. less Masters would be preferable to more WMs?

Anyway was gonna say something similar; another thread discusses the noise and yelling in the galleries at pro events ... and I appreciate the more genteel manner at The Masters.

It is a very different kind of tournament, as pointed out by Rev, but I respect that it holds to its traditions as started by Bobby Jones way back when as an Invitational.

I think it's kinda nice that former champs are still able to compete ... should they wish - I also think it's really considerate when they choose to step aside to open up a spot for a younger competitor.

I would agree that the Master's is great. No issue there. I would not agree with the 18 reasons why. Some of those reasons stifle golf's growth.

Also the Masters is far from the most difficult tournament to qualify for. There are a number of people who qualify under rubrics that are no where near as rigorous as finishing in the top 125 on either the PGA or European tours.

However the limited field is charming and brilliant as it almost insures a leaderboard packed with big names.

The Melbourne Cup is our version of the Kentucky Derby, here in Victoria it's even a public holiday.

Australian Football (AFL) and Rugby League (NRL) are very popular, depending on which part of Australia you live in. Crowds for AFL are massive, especially considering 8 out of 18 teams come from the same state. The opening game of the season drew 90,000.

The Olympics are always popular, the Superbowl is increasing in exposure, but the NFL season in general is barely seen. College sports have virtually no presence, although fans can now access them much easier than in the past. NBA is growing in popularity here, the presence of several Australian players and basketball's high participation numbers with kids are both factors. Baseball and Hockey have very little presence.

The Masters is “THE MASTERS”.

First Major of the year, awesome field of great golfers and amateurs. It has a bit of mystery to me with its Traditions like no other. Can't wait especially with this years field and resurgence of Tiger, Phil & Bubba.

I love a ton of things about the Masters — I couldn't just pick one. The golf course, the theme song, the beautifully dyed ponds, the flowers, watching guys hit it in the water on 12, the fake bird songs, the caddy uniforms, the back-nine, etc.

I dig all of the majors, but I also watch many of the other tournaments and soak up everything I can since I'm a junkie now.

The Masters though is just special-always has been. My favorite part of it is the whole exclusivity that the Masters brings as that weird aura that seems to surround everything. It really feels that it is a show for the best-of-the best in golf and being any part of that as a player, vendor or even a patron is just simply hard to be a part of. If you make it and are able to partake in any of those capacities, then you gotta be truly special and dedicated.

I only watch Majors but The Masters is far and away the best. I like that it is the same course every year (with some changes over the years) instead of a different course like the Opens have. Plus the tv coverage with the quiet music and the views of the flowers and magnolias just make you feel good about spring being upon us.

Like others have said, I watch and enjoy all of the Majors.   What I don't like about the Masters is that every year, I enter the ticket lottery and every year I don't get any.   If the US Open and the PGA were to come to my area, I'm reasonably confident that I could get some tickets.

I can absolutely see why someone would think the traditions feel contrived, but the traditions are what makes The Masters, aren't they? If you eliminated them, wouldn't it be just another golf tournament?
