Sent my clubs down through Shipsticks but took my driver head and 3w head off and was planning on stashing them in my carry on. Kegger
I take off my driver head and stow it in the side pocket of my bag in the headcover (3w and 5w are not adjustable, so no head pulling). I also use a Stiff Arm, put my rain hood on and pack my towel inside the hood. Oh and to protect my irons I use iron headcovers to keep them from banging against eachother.. Might be a little overkill, but I feel much better knowing there is extra padding on everything. TWar
I travel with clubs very regularly. I always put my rain cover on the bag and weave my towel through my iron heads. I had historically traveled with a club glove bag and it was great. I did have an issue with my driver shaft splitting just above the ferrule. I can only imagine it was bc the bag was thrown and the driver to the brunt of the hit. So now I use a spine in my bag to travel. I have also switched to a hardshell KSB case because sometimes I will ship my clubs and like that security. I don't take the heads off. Downside of a hardshell case is that its bulky and at times will not fit in the mid-size/full-size rental car trunks unless I drop the backseat. I like the Club Glove in that respect. Also there is zero additional room in the hardshell case. If I ever need to add anything to the hardshell it is a super tight fit. Overall I will still use the hardshell case but have my Club Glove too. JerkoMcGee
How often does everyone find that TSA searches their bag and messes with how they packed their clubs - is it different for international flights? I'm headed to Scotland at the end of May and have a soft travel bag. Just wondering if i should tape towels around the irons or if that would just piss off security more and leave them less likely to give a damn about my clubs. MGoBlue100
I travel mostly from a small airport in the Carolinas. TSA there dicks with my bag almost every trip. Rearranged clubs, unzipped pockets, sometimes straps aren't even secured on the outside of the bag. Jackholes. At other “major†airports, I rarely have an issue. Perhaps they have too much to do, and the idiots at my home airport have too much time on their hands? Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy "Where'd it go?" "Right in the Lumberyard..." StrokerAce
I'm flying to the west coast on Monday and checking my clubs with Delta. It's been a long long time since I've flown with golf clubs - before the TSA even existed. I've read a number of tips/tricks/etc. I've got a "soft bag" and in my golf bag I mixed my irons with some turned upside down (head in first) and some right side up. I've bunched a few of them together and used rubber bands to hold them tight. I wonder what the TSA will do if they decided to inspect my bag. I imagine that they wouldn't be so particular in replacing them back in the bag. I also removed the heads from all of my hybrids and woods, put them back in their headcovers, rubber banded the ends so they don't somehow slip out and put them in a side pocket with a towel. One last thing - since it's a soft bag I made an impact stick - aluminum pole with a golf ball at the top that is longer than anything else in the bag so that when they chuck the bag around the stick absorbs the impact instead of the clubs. I was hesitant to check them but of all the options - shipsticks, fedex/ups, checking - bringing them on the plane was BY FAR cheaper. Maybe it's due to the fact I'm going east coast to west coast.... MGoBlue100
I recommend all the stuff you've done. (Rubber bands may be a "little" overkill, but then...) Definitely take club heads off if possible. I use a club glove stiff arm; you've made your own. Delta usually does a pretty okay job, it's the TSA that'll mess with your gear. "Where'd it go?" "Right in the Lumberyard..." StrokerAce
just a tip - if you do take the heads off and leave the screw in the head use a piece of tape to hold that screw in so it doesn't somehow slip out. would be a REAL bummer to get to your destination and not be able to reattach the head because of a lost screw! KJG67
I have a hard case. Have checked them and used Ship Sticks. Never had an issue. Prefer checking them as it's cheaper, however Ship Sticks has been completely reliable. I still wrap the heads in a towel. Only downside to my hard case is it's about 3†too long to get into a trunk (wheels), so need to fold down the back seat of a rental or get a minivan.
