Do Golf Shoes Help You Play Better?

Have always played in Nikes, mostly because I like the comfort and they feel like the Nike sneakers I generally wear. Has anyone felt that a specific brand shoe gives you a better chance to score your best?

       Thanks !

No but I think the wrong shoe would probably make you play worse. It's comfort above all!

I saw that, yeah I think it would be interesting to see if there is any advantage in performance for the average golfer, or if its just for the pros.

I like to wear Eccos because of the firm midsole support and wider toe box. I doubt that I play any better but my feet don't hurt as much as when wearing some other brands. I've got some plantar fasciitis in my left foot and need as much arch support as I can get. The 0 drop shoes kill me

Yes. Comfort, support and traction caused by a shoe can help you play better or worse.

The feets are to important to saddle with cheap stuff. Go with quality that'll last 3-5 yrs

Nike is way too narrow for my feet. I'm a big fan of Foot Joy Contour Casual and Versaluxe. I doubt they're the best for traction or support, but being able to walk 18 holes without blisters beats all of that.

Play better? Not sure.

Help your feet/legs feel good through 18 or a few hours at the range? Totally.

I think a good set of golf shoes are totally worth it. I got a nice pair of Nikes a few years ago and they still feel great. They feel really comfortable and my feet never feel tired (even with having flat feet). Have held up really well. Totally worth the price I paid.

They weren't the most expensive pair on the market at the time but weren't the cheapest either.

I have been considering getting a pair of spike-less shoes maybe just for the driving range or nicer weather.

Right now I have the Adidas Climacools in an obnoxious robin's egg blue. They run a little narrow, but they are ridiculously light. Not a ton of support, obviously. But man, they feel good when it's hot out.

I actually almost got these in the grey last summer but when I went to finally make the purchase they were out of my size. Still regretting not getting these back then. Hard to find them in the right size these days.

They are very limited in purpose (hot, dry days), but they are well suited to that purpose. My old pair were the Bite ACs. I wore them until they fell apart.

Longer post than I would have liked and slightly off topic but felt the information could help someone avoid my issues.

I used to think golf shoes were something of a "money grab" and completely unnecessary.  I walk 90% of my rounds on my home course, which is undulating, with as much as 90 feet elevation changes from tee to green, with several side hill lies and preferred the comfort of traditional running shoes.  The wear and tear on my lead (left) knee due to repeated slippage during the follow through led to what will eventually be, a major knee surgery. I have a decent golf swing, on balance with a consistent finishing position.  But without the stability and traction of golf shoes, my lead foot would spin out violently.  Over time, the stress on my lead knee led to torn soft tissue that will require surgery.  It is painful only during certain movements, very unstable laterally and somewhat weak.  Those "certain movements" don't seem to affect the golf swing or walking the golf course.  Which is now exclusively in stable, golf specific shoes!  Problems arise in my knee during instances of balance or lateral movement but, as I said before, for whatever reason don't include the golf swing.  At least not to this point.

I began noticing the issue about 2 years ago but never associated it with playing golf in running shoes.  Which I had done for about 5 years both in terms of on-course play and practice.  I play often with my doctor, who is also my neighbor.  He was the first person to diagnose the root of my soreness.  Since I have returned to playing in stable golf shoes, the soreness has reduced significantly but won't completely go away until I have surgery.  My doctor wants to wait as long as possible before resorting to surgery.  It will be necessary at some point in the near future but, for now, I can manage with therapy and knowing my limitations on that knee.

I now insist my 10 year old daughter wear golf shoes when she plays and practices as a result of my ignorance.

I wear them for traction and comfort, like most others. I don't believe any shoe will improve your game, but they may help you score better versus wearing a pair of tennis shoes or what have you.

Foot joy came out with a cool “shoe fitting” process a couple of years ago. Very few places have it, but if you take three driver swings, it will show you how your feet move during your swing and put you into a “style” of shoe. The guy that did our training said that some of their tour pros picked up some surprising gains by changing footwear. I remember Jimmy Walker was a name that he threw out there and it was something like 12 or more yards he gained by switching his shoes.

Good post. Sorry about the knee. This is the fundamental reason for golf shoes for me. No matter what age you are, or how good you are, golf is an athletic venture. Providing an appropriate base for the rest of your body is important for avoiding injury. It only makes sense to wear shoes that are designed for the task.

Wish you were around in 2011 to give me this advice.

Seriously though, it's not always about how something might help your scorecard.

I made the mistake of forgetting my shoes once at the driving range, and the difference was dramatic. Golf shoes support the lateral movement when your lead foot is perpendicular to your target. Regular running shoes are not designed for lateral support like that. My left ankle and foot had much more pressure

. I am sure if I did that regularly I could injure something.

I'm a fan of the looks of the Tour 360. I tried on a pair in Myrtle Beach and they felt great. $200 is a lot for golf shoes, imo, but I'm sure I waste more in other ways. Waiting for Rob/CG2 to report back on them to see what he thinks.

"Help you play better?"...HA! That's a loaded question! For me, quality equipment-especially footwear is absolutely essential. If you are uncomfortable in any way (shoes, hats, sunglasses, underwear, crummy socks, whatever), performance will suffer-period. Having good comfortable gear on will assuredly assist you in being able to focus on what you need to do on that next dog-leg-left shot over the trees with water on the right, and not be itchin', scratchin' or pullin' on whatever it is that's unsettling you at that time. And this is not a golf-centric thing either...This is universal to any sport or activity us balding house apes do to occupy our time with. Style points of course count as extra... B)

If you are uncomfortable in any way (shoes, hats, sunglasses, underwear, crummy socks...

It took me 35 years of blisters (9 years of them caddying as well as playing) to finally learn that good socks are worth the money. The 18th hole is much easier when your feet are not screaming at you with every step.
