Anyone fish during your round?

txgolfjunkie

Recommended Posts

I've usually packed a collapsible rod in my truck with a simple spinning reel and usually sneak it on the course. Hurricane Harvey really wrecked the bass population on a lot of golf course ponds with the flooding. However, it's that time of year where the bass are on their beds here in S. Texas and can be a bit aggressive.

My best courses for catching fish are usually private clubs since they get less play and less folks scaring the fish.

Anyone else find to the need to wet a line during a round? Post up your catches!

Here's the best I've caught in 2018:

Fish on.jpg

Harvey washed out a lot of the fat hogs and all that's been hitting the line are smaller, aggressive males. Oh well...fish on!

Hadn't thought of fishing during a round, but we've had a lot of fun watching the fish and the gators. Fishing would give something to do during slow play. Nice thought.

As a Tex-pat, unfortunately I no longer have access to the fishable golf holes around Austin. But I regularly reached for my collapsible rod and spinner setup on slow days at Onion Creek Club. Sometimes even stopped at the turn to cast for a bit if I needed to clear my head after a funky outward nine. I also had some close friends that were working with Moretti (Golf Dynamics) at the Hills of Lakeway and after our round out there we would sink a six pack on a stringer and fish an awesome stretch of water that runs through the main golf course. I reeled in several nice Largemouth at both properties on that dinky little rig. Always fished barbless or sometimes even hookless artificial at Onion Creek, just charting honey holes to come back later and stalk correctly.

Not all of us are lucky enough to have a high action lake behind the office. Like golf, I'd be willing to bet you're also scratch fisherman. I'll try to dig up some pics from those days.

I've often thought of doing this, but in my area, I'm pretty sure it's frowned upon.  Fresh water fishing is my other hobby/passion (I don't have a boat yet and I've been salt water fishing on a buddy's boar in the Chesapeake Bay but find more fun fresh water fishing).

We have quite a few people fishing out at the little country course I play at.  There's a few members that will stop playing and fish a little and then continue on playing after that.  Mainly though, we have people that golf and other people that fish.  It's a fairly large pond though.  You'll see boats in there every now and then with trolling motors hitting up all the hot spots.

Here's the vibe I get from courses around Houston:

Don't hold up play...don't make it too obvious...and the marshalls know where the big fish are located.

I was playing one day at a course just north of Baton Rouge and a marshall saw me fishing and high tailed it to me...I thought I was about to be removed from the course. He slammed on the brakes and quietly told me: Fish the north end of the pond on 15...it's a great spot. And then he sped off. Oh and there was a No Fishing sign next to my cart.

I think most courses, at least down south, don't mind a paying customer to fish a little here and there, but they don't want the general public trespassing onto their property to fish. That's why you see the signs up but aren't really enforced.

HA! If you mean the 8' deep concrete bathtub that was recently stocked with 'sterile' Asian Grass Carp then yes, I do have a high action lake behind the office. I hate Lake Woodlands. I'll go spend my lunch breaks in the surrounding neighborhoods instead of wasting my time looking at carp all day.

And my fishing handicap is north of 36...I have a casting handicap of about +3 but actually catching the fish...yea I'm a 'hacker'. I have the cleanest selection of lures because they never see the inside of a fish's mouth.

One of the courses near me had a Golf/Fishing tournament a couple years ago. I know a couple guys who played. It was a scramble followed by a fishing competition. Winner was a combination of score and weight of fish caught. Apparently it was a great time, but I'm not a huge fisherman.

My course is a muni and we have several ponds.  We get kids who will sneak onto the course and fish; No Trespassing signs are up.  It's a liability that the city doesn't want.  I have never seen any golfers fish.  I'm sure it's frowned upon because if someone is seen fishing, then more people will trespass.  BTW, the river is 3 blocks away.

There is a golf and casting club that I've played a couple of times. Nice pond on 18. Whenever I play, there are people out there fly fishing. Have never brought my rod, though...

Pretty much all the ponds on the courses around here are artificial and not stocked. If there was one in the middle of the back 9 at my home course, I'd probably stop and drown some worms or wet a line to clear my head

I've fished a few golf balls out of the edge of ponds, that's about it.

This reminds me of my high school/early college days.  There's several ponds on golf courses we would go diving in at midnight and come back with a ton of balls.  There was a new course that had just opened then that wasn't yet developed and we snuck out there and came back with a couple hundred pro v1s.  Now there's houses up and you can't get out there anymore, but I'm too old to be doing that anyway.

I'm not much of a fisherman.  Fished and hunted out of necessity as a kid which destroyed any interest I might have had in them as a "sport".

My daughter hit a fisherman in the left thigh with a tee shot last summer on #16 of my home club.  We asked him to move several times or at least step out of the way until she teed off.  He refused so she teed off anyway.  He then acted all offended and accused my 9 year old of hitting him intentionally.  The teeing ground for kids is located roughly 150 yards ahead of the regular tees, on the side of the lake.  This idiot was standing 50 yards directly in front of the tee box.  Stupid is as stupid does!

My daughter smiled and thanked him for keeping her ball dry!  It was a proud moment for me as a father and golfer.

The ponds on my course are also artificial.  But they have fish, turtles, and frogs.  The ponds are filled with water from the Columbia River, and the golf course uses the pond water to irrigate at night.  The ponds are not fully drained during the winter, but they get pretty low and the surface will freeze.  In the spring we get herons that stalk the low waters for fish... easy catching!

HAHAHA! I bet that guy never fished that close to a tee box again!

And I think that's why most courses don't want people fishing their ponds...for the non-golfer that comes onto the property and could possibly get hit by an errant golf shot.

My brother-in-law's course's ponds are maintained by the Texas Parks & Wildlife so they have some big ol bucket mouths in their ponds. The course has a policy: if you want to fish the ponds, you have to become a member. You would be surprised how many people are members and have never touched a golf club in their life. Some of the best fishing spots have been setup to be away from tee boxes and fairways.

There will be lots of fowl around, but that's about it. A few places have integrated them into their irrigation systems. I know one course has over 1.3 million gallons available when they're at normal water levels. Made an absolute mess of the course the season they were running all the pipe, but now the course is always green

If the pace of play allows for it, I'll cast 5 times in a pond and move on. If you catch something, most of the time the group behind you won't mind as long as you get back in position on the next hole...but that's if I catch something...which is rare.

Man, now that would be awesome...golfing and fishing at the same time!  Pace of place could definitely be an issue, unless the ponds are so fully stock that you catch something on the first or second cast!

  • 3 weeks later...

Caught this fella during my Monday round up in Huntsville, TX. Managed to make 5 casts before getting a strike. Reeled it in, snapped a pic, released and drove on to my ball in the fairway. Still played 18 in 3 hours with a 4 minute stop to fish.

Raven Nest Bass.jpg

And if you don't think the golf gods want you to fish, riddle me this batman...

Prior to the catch (12 holes) I was +5 and just had whiplash from my ride on the bogey train.

Post catch...-2 to finish the round.

Result: Bass = Birdies. Fact.

At my club we have three fairly large interconnected ponds that have plenty of bass and carp. The carp grow to between two and three feet in length. I love seeing the bass clearing their beds and sitting on them, each bed separated by two to three feet.

The only fishing that gets done is by the birds, but it is tempting.

If they'll let you, put some corn on a hook and try for one of those carp- it'll give you one helluva fight!

Nice! 1.25lb bass?

I don't carry a scale with me but I always inflate the weight because that's what fishermen do! Sucker probably weighed in around 30...ounces...
