Breathing During Swing

Recommended Posts

This is the kind of question you ask your opponent as he's getting ready to hit an important tee shot....

To be absolutely honest, I've never considered it. My best guess is that I hold my breath,  after all, an entire swing only takes a second or two.  I don't think this is important enough to think about during a swing, do whatever feels right, and whatever helps you relax best.

I don't think about it during the swing. However, I during my preshot routine , I do take a couple of deep breaths to ease any tension.

Same. I try to remember to have a fairly deliberate exhale just before take-away.

I honestly do not think about it. I know I exhale before I address the ball but that's where I stop caring about breathing ha.

Isn't this in the 7-4-7 stuff the club pro guy is pushing.

Last thing I do before my takeaway. It's a combination relaxation / rhythm thing.

I've never thought about it so I had to grab a club and go through my swing.

To loosen any tension I take a deep breath then a long exhale before addressing the ball. I take half of a normal inhale during the backswing but I don't exhale until after I've hit the ball.

I think I hold my breath. I've heard you can gain 10 yards by exhaling on the downswing. Not sure 'bout that, though. Sounds fishy. Sometimes I start thinking about this question as I'm about to hit. That really drives me crazy!

I've never thought about how I breathe.i just take a deep breath then get into position and swing. I've heard some talk about it's good to brace the core but never read/heard anything about breathing

  • 4 years later...

Lately going through some of these old threads to see what's in storage here, and the first written idea-instruction about breathing I came across was from Joe Norwood who was the pro at LA Country Club for about 20 years, he said "inhale and retain the breath during the swing. This will lessen the weight of the upper body by about ten pounds.”  Not sure if that's true or not but found it interesting at the time.

Good hand action comes from good body action.
