Ping Putter App and Cradle

Recommended Posts

I was recently fitted in AZ by PING at Scottsdale Kierney Course.  The fitter used the PING I Phone App to determine that I have a slight arc, vs. straight back and through.  I have an I phone 6 Plus and the cradle is too small to try this myself and to determine what issues this app may be right on or junk.  (I ordered a putter).  Do any of you know if there are different sized cradles available? Second, have any of you used the software/app and found it to be useful in evaluating tempo, etc.  Thanks in advance for any replies.

The biggest problem I had with the Ping app and the iphone cradle was how heavy the phone was on the putter.  It's impossible to think that people can take their normal putting stroke when you're adding an extra 140+ grams to the weight of the putter.  I know I never felt comfortable with how heavy it was and could definitely notice my stroke doing different things to compensate for the weight added.

Great idea but it needed to be done in a much lighter package.

My bag is a revolving door!

I've used it a lot over the winter (basement putting mat) and found the information very useful in helping me determine specs for my next putter as well as correcting swing faults. I currently have data points from 50 practice sessions that I put into an excel spreadsheet .

There are three features in the app: Putter handicap - provides information for putter fitting, including generic recommendation for type of putter . Putting practice - information on closing angle, impact angle, tempo, lie angle and shaft lean. Golf workout - linked to Apple Watch. I haven't used this feature so can't comment.

I believe there is only one cradle available which fits the apple 6. I also found that if you place the cradle about halfway down (or higher) it doesn't seem to make the putter feel heavy (balance point?).

It has really helped me understand my swing (I have a slight arc) and correct some issues related to impact angle and shaft lean.

The information I collected on the Ping putter app did not match up exactly with the SAM Puttlab info I got during a fitting. Due to this I am a little leery of the Ping app but it was a lot of fun to play around with. I just always wondered if I “really” had it lined up right.

I'm sure it's not as good as the puttlab, however, it is a good trend indicator that can easily be used at home.

It was a big help to me last spring pointing out consistency issues on a general basis and working out a couple of flaws in my stroke such as having a consistently open face angle.  Like Tony said, it is a good trend indicator.  For the price (free app/$10 cradle) I thought it was at least worth a shot, and is now a useful tool.

I have only seen cradles for iPhone 6/6s and a Samsung Galaxy (don't remember the model #).  But I only saw the Galaxy cradle on eBay and I think it was for the pre-curved screen generations.  I know other MGS members have used some form of tape and engineering excellence to make their phone's stick.

I also was fitted at Ping a year ago.  I used the information to buy a Sigma G Doon putter and the fit is great.  The info was useful for selecting putter specs, but I don't think I would ever use it after purchase.

I have an iPhone 7, and the phone fits in the cradle for the 6.

I second the other comments that the app is a good trend indicator. Further, the information  it gives you on your arc and fit is helpful.

I used a Ping Anser for over 20 years. But for the sake of trying something new, I decided to switch to a face-balanced mallet last year. It never felt right. I got the cradle and app to see if it would help. It said I had a slight arc. So I switched back to my Anser, and everything feels right again. Dropped an average of 3 putts a round. So it was worth the $10.

Nice that the cradle is now $10. A lot more reasonable/fair than when I bought the original for C$30 for my iPhone 4s.

  • 1 year later...

and now the cradle cannot be found anywhere for iPhone except the 4! LOL  I think I may try the old case/vice grip for shaft combo that some have made.
