Hi Everyone,

My name is Greg Dorval and I run the Customer Experience team at Arccos Golf. This sounds like an awesome challenge and I am happy to help answer any questions around Arccos as they arise. If there are any outstanding questions at the moment that haven't been answered yet, just let me know!

Greg

Thanks Greg.

I didn't get picked for this, but I did order a full set of Cobras. So how do I go about getting a sensor for my putter?

The new line of Cobra F8 irons come standard with embedded sensors. Along with each set of irons, comes a box of 7 screw-in sensors (1 putter sensor, and 6 regular sensors). This will allow you to outfit your entire bag of 14 clubs with Arccos sensors.

This is a great post. Will be interesting to follow along.

I have an arccos that Puma sent me, not for the contest, and I have never used phone in front pocket with it. How much does it effect it if I use it in my back pocket instead?

Any of the testers have feedback on that?

Hi alafollette,

The Arccos Gen-1 sensors communicate via bluetooth and can be used in the back pocket with no issue. The 2nd generation 360 sensors communicate via high frequency from the sensor to the microphone in the phone. If the phone is in the back pocket, there is high likelihood that communication from the sensor will not reach the phone as it will be blocked by the body which will cause missed shots.

Hopefully this helps you guys. I have and use Arccos and I hate having my phone in my pocket since it vibrates with calls and emails all day. To solve the problem I purchased a refurbished iPhone SE, the smallest they make, on eBay for around $100. Got it and it looks brand new. Anyway, I ordered it with no carrier. IE no phone service. Went to Best Buy and told them what it was for and they gave me a SIM card for free and installed it. You will need this to proceed in the phone setup.

Once setup is done connect to WiFi, download the Arcoss app and any courses you want to play and you are done. Get to the course, hit search and press the downloaded course and play and you are done. No phone calls, no emails and the phone is really small.

There is a drawback however, you cannot use the caddie feature for wind updates. It needs current data for that and without an internet connection which you most likely can't get on the course. At this point I don't even know the phone is there, don't care if it gets banged around and GPS still works and all data is tracked.

Greg - I asked this in the private message, but I think this info would be valuable to all our Spies and anyone who stumbles upon this thread. Can you confirm what Wedgie states above, that users can use an iPhone with no phone service to run the Arccos app with no issues?

Thanks, Wedgie. I would like Greg to confirm that as far as Arccos is concerned, there's no difference between a phone with data turned off and a phone with no service at all. I'm being completely anal here, but mainly I want to know that either Assisted GPS will work on a phone with no service (it should - the phone can still make 911 calls) or that Arccos doesn't need aGPS.

Haha, you aren't being anal but it is better that he answers with a more thorough response. I think Arccos is great and it is best you have all your questions answered before investing in a new phone or whatever solution suites your needs. I found this works for me and is hassle free. If the weather ever cooperates in New England I will spend more time with the app and utilize it to its fullest.

Yeah, I know enough about this stuff to be dangerous, from trying to get a GPS tracking product off the ground back in 2010. I know the tech is much, much better now.

My wife and her 3 Sisters(spending the winter with us) went to Bingo last night, so I had the afternoon/evening off.

I went to my favorite Golf Galaxy(fka Golfsmith) where I have spent booquoo bucks over the years.  It is located in North Tampa, about 15 miles from my house.  They kindly took me through the ropes using their trackman system and the fitter(Jim) kept me in the conversation as I told him what I was interested in.

First, deciding what shafts for the irons, he put the same shaft that is in my F6's to compare to my 7 iron....I was drilling my F6 straight but the F8 was consistently pulling.  We then progressed from there to several shafts until we landed with the Recoil.  The same shaft that I have in my Ben Hogan Ptx's(that I had with me as well).  Bingo! Straight down the pike!

Next up was the Driver.  I had my Wilson Triton with Paderson kinetic imrt shaft.  He began with the F8+ using different shafts, then I tried the F8......For my swing, big difference.  The F8 has the weight port in the heel versus the rear for the F8+....this straightened me out.  Settled on the Tensei ck Blue 60 grams.

Finally, I needed to determine if I wanted the 4-GW irons or the Combo 5H, 6-GW setup.  My current bag has a Bio Cell 2H then 4-SW irons.  I am very used to the 4 iron and it has many functions in my game.  I also hit the 4 & 5 iron very well so I did not want to pull them out of the bag.  The fitter taped up a 22* fixed hybrid for me and pow! right down the pike.  I don't need to tell you which setup I'm gonna select.

So there, you probably can figure out my selection.  The fitter had excellent communication action skills and very knowledgeable of the Cobra clubs......my cost......ZERO.

Yes, there is no problem playing on a phone without a data connection, as long as the course maps are downloaded beforehand on wifi. When you get back on wifi, all data from your round will load to our servers.

The one difference is what Wedgie stated, in that without a data connection you will not receive 'plays like' distances if you have an Arccos Caddie subscription because we can not pull in live weather, specifically wind conditions. You will also not be able to use off the tee Caddie recommendations, because the Caddie needs to hit our servers to run machine learning to come up with a recommendation.

Is the putter sensor still bluetooth?  I had one round last year with no putts but all of the other shots registered.  Rebooting my phone fixed the putter but always wondered why it only the one club.

Foz - Thanks for the write up. I just scheduled my fitting at my local GG/GT (also fka Golfsmith) on Saturday morning. They don't know me from Adam, so I'm in for the $149 Platinum fitting. I'll report back. I haven't done a fitting in nearly a decade, so I can't wait to see what they tell me.

Thanks, Greg. And to close the loop on this, I'll add what you put in the private message thread: You can use an iPhone with no phone service. It's basically a glorified iPod. I'll be buying an iPhone SE (nice and small in that front pocket), and I'll cover this in my write up. My crappy Android phone is a wonderful mobile hotspot, so I'll use that for data on the course and link the SE up to it.

When Arccos 360 sensors were launched over a year ago, they included a gen-1 putter sensor as we had not yet perfected a 360 version of the putter sensor (due to it's sensitivity it is a much different sensor than the iron sensors). We have recently created and launched a 360 version of the putter sensor, and all F8 iron sets include a 360 putter sensor.

I think Arccos should work on an embedded sensor for a putter. Maybe in a Superstroke?

I like that idea, especially since their screw-in sensors don't work with all putter grips. I'd probably buy an embedded one.

We just so happen to be talking to SuperStroke about creating an attachment for the counter-weighted putters. It is still in the prototyping stage at this point. Currently, if you have a counterbalanced putter, the best solution is to cut the screw off of the sensor, and use electrical tape to attach the sensor to the top of the grip. It's not the most elegant solution, but it does work for shot tracking purposes.

I would definitely buy a new Superstroke grip with an embedded Arccos sensor.....I hate the way the sensor fits on my putter now.

Great idea for an open discussion on our pre-thoughts after being selected.

There is a tech fitter from Cobra Golf about 40 minutes away from me so I'm going to get fit by him after my trip to Pinehurst.  How I am going to choose what is going in the bag ?  Simple - I'm going to have some heavy discussions with the fitter and figure out what will be the best fit for my current swing.  If he says I'm better off with a 5-GW and hybrids on the bottom to replace the long irons, that's what I'm going to do.  If he says I'm hitting the long irons well, then I'll go 4- GW.  I'm going in with an open mind with the F8 series, without any preconceived notions as to what I should be playing.  The only firm decision I'm am going make is that I will be going with the F8 one length set because I've been intrigued by the one iron length thought and it might help eliminate positioning issues that come with different length irons.

When the contest was first announced, I had to think long and hard if I wanted to even participate!  Even though you get to keep the entire set and bag, make no doubt about it that it is a season long commitment to test and report on the Cobra clubs here and through social media and how they are helping or not helping in attaining the goals mentioned in my entry.  It is going to be a lot of work, but fun work! :D  I like the synergy of Arccos reporting the hard facts that can show my strengths and weaknesses and Cobra potentially being able to mitigate those weaknesses through the technology engineered within those clubs.  So why my interest in wanting to participate in this testing opportunity ? To test out the single length cobra irons and see if the single length theory can really make a difference as a high handicapper to drop my handicap; to see if the Arccos system can give me cold hard numbers and allow me to come up with a solid game plan to practice my shortcomings and to make my game better!  Keeping the clubs and bag is just an extra plus!

As we start this journey together, don't be afraid to ask us questions!  This will be a learning experience for us all and hopefully the Cobras blend of engineering and technology will help us all become better golfers :D

Cobra will be sending us the Arccos 360 system so that we can use our current clubs as a baseline so I've started reading up on  Arccos.  Just two things that I have come across:

  • Per the the Arccos quick start guide, Arccos requires that your phone be in your front lead pocket (right front pocket if you are a lefty and left front pocket if your are right handed).  This is so the sensor can detect the swing and record data.  I don't know about you, but my phone is not small.  I don't know if I'm going to like that.
  • Anybody have a counter balanced putter with a weight ?  If you do, you are going to have some issues as all the sensors including the putter screws into the grip.  My current putter changed mid-season last year to a Nike counter balanced putter so there is a weight screw already in the butt end of the grip.  Slight problem there.  For the purpose of testing, I'll switch back to my Bettinardi C03 since I had putted with that for years until I did some experiments with it last year and shortened it too much.  I'll have it extended and use it once more.

That's all I have for now.  Don't be afraid to ask your questions - fire away!

MDGolfHacker I just got fitted for the Cobra F8 yesterday and I immediately put it in the bag. The Cobra Connect/Arccos technology is awesome! I normally keep my phone in the cart. I don't like having a lot of stuff in my pockets other than tees, balls, markers etc. during a round. I am an iOS user and I have noticed when I have the Arccos app running that the microphone icon is on in the top left corner of my iPhone X. I am one of those people who like to play music during my round. ON IOS YOU CANNOT PLAY MUSIC AND HAVE THE ARCCOS/COBRA CONNECT APP RUNNING AT THE SAME TIME.

I switched to the F7 One Lengths last fall. Absolutely love them. I broke 85 for the first time today with a mainly Cobra bag setup. You are going to love these clubs. I can't wait to read y'alls reviews.

Seriously? That seems like a serious hiccup in the app development. I don't always listen to music when I play but to never have the option when using the system is a bit of a bummer.

Maybe Gregarccos can chime in and clarify. I just read how the Arccos sensor actually works on their website. It is an impact sensor and has a bluetooth connection to the phone. Each sensor is an individual device registered to your phone so when you hit a shot the app knows which club you hit i.e. when you pair each sensor you name the club 4, 5, 6 etc. Maybe the music problem is actually a device limitation because I was streaming music through bluetooth to my airpods. Might have too many bluetooth devices at the same time which limits the streaming.

I believe the app uses the mic on the phone to pick up sounds for shot detection. From what I've read, you also can't make calls and detect shots.

So no Arccos when I'm dialed into an off-hours conference call and playing.

I've also heard that you can't use a bluetooth speaker while using it as well. Not that it's a huge issue, just something to note for those who like their music.

editing this to point out the fact that I'm an idiot and someone already noted that above. I'll see myself out.

Oh, wait. Arccos won't be running on my REAL phone. I can still pull this little stunt.
