deejaid WIYB 2018

Recommended Posts

Was out hitting some wedges in the backyard and saw the bag being lit at the "golden hour" so I thought I'd snap a few pics and share my WITB.

My driver is the same Cleveland Classic Custom XL 9* from last year but I swapped in a House Of Forged regular flex shaft instead of the stock stiff I played last year. So far accuracy hasn't been effected, distance might be a bit longer.

3 wood is my trusty Nicklaus Air Max I've had in the bag for 15 years or so.

20* Adams Pro Hybrid- it's spot is tentative right now.

Irons are KZG Cavity Back 3-PW, Gap wedge is KZG Blade all shafted with KBS C-Taper Lites Stiff soft stepped once.

Sand Wedge is a MacGregor LRA forged 5612.

Putter is a circa 1970's Ping Auld bronze.

Vintage style headcovers that actually match the colors of my old bag and one headcover in Oakland A's colors so when playing with others here in the bay area they know I'm not a Giants fan.

I'm pretty happy with this set up, no real need for anything else. I had bought a nice Machine M5 putter this winter but the Ping Auld I bought for $20 won out.IMG_20180401_180954.jpgIMG_20180401_180825.jpg

They say once you find a fairway wood you love, hold onto it forever.

That club has been so good to me I had been afraid to modify it in any way, including a new grip. I finally changed the grip last month. I hope I didn't mess up its mojo.

Nice bag. Play what works. I'm also a fan of clubs the casual golfer has never heard of.

Love the look of those KZG. You can't beat a simple perimeter weighting design like that. Reminds me of the Maxfli Rev Black Dots I used to play. Sigh, I am still on the hunt for my 3 wood soulmate.

Yeah, I'm not sold on it either. It and the 3-Iron cover the same gap, but I have room in the bag for both until one or the other comes out on top.

The KZG's are an older model from the early 2000's and are forged in Japan by Kyoei. A real high quality forging on par with Miura or JDM stuff. I like forged, classic looking clubs with basic perimeter weighting. I had bought a set of KZG blades to fool around with and they were really not too punishing on mishits but on center strikes felt absolutely heavenly, so I set out to build the KZG players cavity backs.

First set I built with Flighted Rifles and I didn't love the ball flight so I sold them as I was digging my Macgregor CB-92's. After a bit I wanted something more forgiving than the Mac's and I could find nothing that looks as simple and clean as the KZG's so I bought another set.

This time I shafted them with the KBS C-Taper Lites from my Mac's and wow! What a difference over the Rifle shafts.

Really the KZG's are just a great forged head with classic looks that can be had cheap, so that's how they made it to my bag.

Yeah I had set my bag down and was hitting some chips and looked over and thought, “man, my cheap set looks good”

Those look very similar to the old Greg Norman Cobras... I like it.

Then you should pick up a set of Macgregor VIP Tour CB 92s. Deejaid has them in his vintage bag. I think that particular forging is right up your purist alley.

Yeah the Macgregor CB-92, Macgregor JNP, and Cobra Norman Forged Cavity Back are all the same Iron as near as I can tell. All released in the late 80's/early 90's and have a smaller head size and a flat sole with a straight leading edge. Very easy to hit fat.

The KZG came out around 2000 and are very similar in shape to the Macgregor PCB irons of the same time period. Really the evolution of the CB-92/ JNP series as they added more rounded camber to the sole so you won't be taking huge beaver pelts.

I can tell you with my CB-92's it was like throwing darts. I have never been as accurate with a set of irons. My misses though would be greater as I'd hit one fat, then be afraid to hit down and through and hit the next shot thin.

Comparison shots of the KZG 7-iron next to the MacGregor CB-92 7-iron.

Remember, the Macs are old school lofts too, so the 7-iron is equivalent to the KZG or modern 8.IMG_20180402_084406.jpgIMG_20180402_084541.jpg
