Stock wedges with set

Who actually plays the stock wedge(s) that came with your set? Looking at 716 AP1 and all sets come with the PW and some up to AW. Seems foolish to buy the AW if my plans are to be fitted for some Vokeys or something in that line.

PW is normal for most sets. I'd just leave it out and stick with your plan of getting fitted for some Vokeys. I play my i200's PW and then I have a set of MD3s.

I actually used to play the set AP2 Gap Wedge. I would highly suggest considering it if you only really hit full shots and the occasional green side chip. Only reason I moved away from it was because I personally hit it too far and had almost hit it the same as my PW at times and my Vokey 50* blends far better for me.

I believe I say this in a lot of threads, but I do play with the stock set down to SW because I'm playing One Length. I also think that sometimes they can flow a bit better in gapping fashion because they are designed with the rest of the iron set in mind. I also don't use gap wedge/A wedge type clubs for shots around the green so I don't need the tricked up grooves and what not. However, I'll fully admit t's a "to each their own" thing.

I used to use the AW in sets, but ever since I started relying on the AW for bump and runs, I've really started seeing the benefits of using a proper wedge.

It all depends on what your perspective is. The 716 AP1 P wedge is 43 degrees - that's a 9-iron for the more traditional lofted players. That means your equivalent Vokey gapping might not work quite so seamlessly with your AP1 set - particularly if your main buying point of the AP1 line is forgiveness. Needless to say, you need to work out the yardages for which ever option you decide to go with, but feel, trajectory, spin and forgiveness will all play their part too - not to mention swing weight, shaft selection, sole grind etc.

Go about it with a bit of thought first before opting to buy.

I play TM SLDR 4i-GW/AW. I actually kind of like that setup because I hit a lot of full-swing, 115 yd. shots with the GW. I usually pitch with either a 54° or a 58°. If you plan on hitting a lot of full-swing shots, maybe try going with a GW from the set.

This has certainly come up before but it can be difficult to hunt down old threads.

About four years ago I was asked to be in a test where I compared SCOR wedges to the PW and GW that came with my sets

SCORs claim was that it's dispersion would be tighter.

For me it was ridiculously so with GW - the SCOR was much tighter to the pin and with its dispersion. It was a push at PW. The other two testers found it tighter with both wedges.

But be warned, Vokeys are not SCORs. I can't speak to your game but I would be tossing away numerous strokes if you took my SCORs and forced me to game Vokeys.

You should see if you can get playability guarantee and try the Vokey 50 vs. the stock GW. That's the best way for you to know. That or visit a Titleist fitter.

I did that recently at my club on a ball fitting day and it was a huge help!
