Pet Training tips and tricks

Kor.A.Door

Recommended Posts

We have pet Pics, we've got pet care. How about a thread for training, nothing worse than a dog that has no training.

We recently adopted a new German Shepherd Mix, she's 7 months old so still a pup, she's a pretty good dog, she does have her “puppy” bursts of energy, but other than that she is really good, and she is learning very well. We've had here about a month and she didn't really have a name, so she's still sort of learning her name. I've watched some videos on training and have learned a lot, but sometimes think that some of the videos are contrived to make it look so easy to do, and it's not. So let's hear some tips that you all have that you can share with all of us to help us in training our pets.

Tips for sit, stay, come, walking on a leash, heel, walking off leash. How did you train your pet to do tricks, roll over, speak, shake. Anything that could be fun for all of us to teach our furry family members.

Will definitely be following along with this. Gotta teach my new pup to fetch me a beer from the fridge.

Tip: instead of buying exoensive treats for training, use Cheerios, my dogs love them, and way less expensive.

Tip: for Puppies who are teething, give them Ice cubes to chew on, it gives them something else to chew, and sort of numbs the gums and helps with the hurting.

We use the squeaker from one of our puppy's old toys to get her attention.

+1 on the cheerios - our puppy will come running from the other room if she hears me opening up the box. It's her favorite treat (we have plain ones - no sugar coating)

Peanut butter is another great treat for dogs!

Biggest thing I found with my pup was making time for specific training and being sure to use a calmer voice. There are always set backs, but now that he's older (5 years) he is very well behaved and listens to all commands with even in a softer voice.

I had a roommate who's dogs were also great, but would only listen to you in a stern almost angry voice which I didn't enjoy.

Time while there young really pays off for when they are older and will make life so much simpler!

Finally if possible try and do off leash training so when going to a park you can let your dog off and run, they'll burn way more energy running on their own and playing with other dogs then they will on a leashed walk!

When training for anything, you need lots and lots of patience!!

We found getting them to respond to a hand gesture instead of just verbal command helped a lot compared to previous pets. And lots of praising/treats (don't have to be dog treats). Even for something as little as going to the bathroom outside when they're getting housebroken.

I taught my dog to rollover by having her lay down first. Then I would grab her left paw and gently push her over and help her complete the roll all while saying "Rollover" then I would reward her with a treat and praise her loudly by saying "Good Rollver". We did this 5 minutes every night for about a week and she got it. As mentioned training should always be pleasant, short, rewarding and patient.

If I have a treat I can get our pup to do just about anything. I'm really trying to work with her on coming. The problem is that if I have a treat I can't get her away from me in order to call her back. If I have a treat she will sit right by me and follow me if I try to move. So should I try to teach stay first?

Ok. Millie is almost 7 mos old. We need her to stop jumping-up on people, and to “come” on command, especially when we want her to come inside from going “potty”. Thoughts?

So far, with the jumping, we will hold her down, and say “down” when she's about ready to get on someone at the door, or kids as they wake-up and come into the living room...

When I want to stop my dogs from jumping I give them a quick knee to the chest. Quick and just enough to startle them. Come is easy use a long leash start in the house and work outside. Most dog stores have check cords to use for this and they are 15 to 25 feet long.

Use single syllable commands: sit, stay, come, heel, lay, up, down, in, out, no, etc. Dogs have a hard time with full sentences!

Combine vocal single syllable commands with single motion gestures.

Use the pets/praise/treats triple combo for positive reinforcement and reward each obedience. They'll get into that! No need to punish their confusion or slowness.

At first you will have to physically “pose” the dog with some commands... as in push its hips down when you tell it to sit and push both ends down when you command “lay”, force it off the couch when you command “down”, etc.

Practice with them for 10-15 minutes a day for a week and you can teach them most of the basics. Don't tackle too many commands at one time... just one or two new ones each day with a cumulative review (and pets/praise/treats to put them at ease and in a good learning mood) at the start of each session. “Come” is the easiest. “Stay” is the hardest.

To the experts, what's the best way to get a pup to not whine or bark during the night when he gets in his kennel? He goes in just fine, but when he can't see anyone he goes crazy.

I think Dogs are the best trainers. Our puppy (now ten yrs old)  trained my wife and myself to give her treats when she wants, attention when she wants, and play when she wants.

Have you tried putting a blanket over the kennel so he can't see? Our dog whined a lot when we first got him, but one time on a cool night we put a blanket over top to keep some warmth inside and he didn't whine at all, so we just kept doing it. That was 11 years ago now.

We did that last night, covered everything but the front. He whined for a little while and then gave up I guess and went to bed. I'm assuming it's just an anxiety issue?

Yea puppies are use to being in groups so them being solo makes things worse for them.

We cover the whole thing. He prefers it that way I guess.

We always made the crate a 'fun' and very comfortable place for our puppy - so her most comfortable bed is in there along with her favorite toys. She also knows when she goes in there she gets a treat. When we tell her it's time for bed - she'll go running into the crate.

With our new puppy, I want her to go to bed on her own, meaning I don't want to force to go into her kennel, I don't want her to feel like it's a punishment to have to go to bed, so I put a treat in a toy and show her that it's in there and she goes right in. She is learning though, sometimes I'll tell her to go to bed and she just goes right in before I give her the treat.

Hello there! I know that training a dog is quite common, but not only dogs can be trained. I, personally, have a rabbit and I’m also training him. During the lockdown, I was bored, like everybody else and I accidentally found an article on petsoid about training a pet rabbit. I had plenty of time to practice and it works. Obviously, they won’t do the same tricks as any dog would do, but it is still fun. We started with a simple one, potty training and now he poops at the same place and not all over the house.
