2018 Official Forum Member Review - Snell MTB Black & Red

Recommended Posts

I'm also one that continues to be impressed with this ball. From tee to green, both the red and black perform well. Feels good off the driver and for me, the black is comparable in distance to the AVX/CS Truvis. I can get mid irons to stop on the green just fine, and wedge shots, whether full or not, do what I need them to do. Now if I put an awful swing on the ball, its' going to find the woods, but with the performance and price point, I don't know if you'll find a better deal.

Completely agree with all of this

I love reading through this thread... I have only tried the original Snell MTB so far and am completely in love with the performance. I still have a box to work through, but will definitely be checking out the new line. From what I read here, it sounds like they definitely deliver.

It definitely does! Played the Original and didn't love it for my game but the MTB Black has definitely made all the improvements necessary for everyone to at least consider putting it in play!

Been playing with the Black pretty much all summer and it never fails to perform even in windy conditions. Just seems to penetrate right on through. Control around the greens is awesome too. I still don't hit many greens, but the few that I've stamped all had the ball stopping right near the landing zones. Also continues to impress with durability. I actually played a full 18 with a single ball not long ago and it hardly looked like it had a mark on it. Love it off the putter face too. Sounds solid and rolls true. Great ball!

I had an old MTB in my bag last week and played it by accident and wondered what was wrong with my ball. The Black has been and continues to be awesome. I just ordered two more boxes with the flag on them.

I'm contemplating selling all my Kirkland's and picking up the Black. It performed so well for me and I want to play it...

By the was I loved the OG MTB, but the Black far outperforms the old ball.

Heck, you'd probably make a profit doing that too! :P

Maybe...I don't know what folks are paying for them. I'll have to check.

Thread bump here...

Man the more I play with the MTB Blacks, the more impressed I am. Now I am definitely not a monster on approach shots, but the few times I get it right, say 150-100 in, this ball just STOPS! I mean within yards, or sometimes even feet from the pitch mark...dead. This ball in the hands of someone with better skills than me would surely be impressed by the way it performs consistently to PV1 standards. Chipping with it is also awesome. Soft off the face and accurate.

It will take a lot for a different ball to try and kick this one from my bag. The price is right and the performance is simply outstanding...even for the likes of me. This ball, combined with improved equipment and tons of playing and practice has helped me go from a 30 hcp to a 21 this season. It is consistent, reliable, durable and has awesome feel. All attributes of a "premium" ball but with a cost that is palatable.

Thank-you Dean Snell and thank-you to MGS for helping enlighten me to the fact that all golf balls are not created equal. This one ROCKS!

Definitely the Black is a very good ball for someone like me also. They’re no joke.

Snell has a sale on the MTB Black right now. 6 Dozen for $150. Pretty darn good, especially for such a great ball!

I wonder if they'll have a Black Friday Sale?

I picked up a sixer of the MTB Black myself after getting the test dozen earlier this year. I've also converted a few friends. They just perform. That said, I didn't love the Red, either the sheen on the ball or the feel, especially in the short game, compared to the Black. Different strokes...

Black has been fantastic for me. I'll be picking up 6 or 12 dozen at some point here. Just not sure if I should wait for Black Friday or not. Decisions decisions.

I found one (Black) yesterday and hit it for the first time ever on 17 teebox. 311 yds.

then a gap wedge to a few feet for a bird. Then lipped the bird on 18 after 2 more good shots.

and it was pretty beat up too. So it seems really long, stops good.

meh...😂😂

I've gotten several comments from playing partners (especially strangers when playing as a single) on how well the Blacks play around the greens especially for shots on par-3 tees. Man if I hit those right-even with a 6i, they just seem to plant themselves real nice like a lawn dart. How'd it sound and feel for you?

I only got 4 hits and one 10’ putt and then 2 tap ins.

but, it all felt good, especially the crushed drive . The wedges in were nice, and spun decently. I’m all in on the chrome soft ‘s right now so unfortunately I will probably only play those 2 holes with it. But my initial reaction was good, and enough to where I would definately try them again in the future

      Hello there!
Since there aren’t near ranges where I live and courses memberships and fees are expensive, I have searched for alternatives.
Found the famous Birdie balls and the Almost Golf Balls and yesterday I came across this new ball: Sci-Core practice ball: here’s a link to a video of them: https://youtu.be/sjVC1mCJEF4
I have to admit they look good at least. They seem to be similar to the Almost Golf Balls.
Has anyone from this forum tried them? Would love to see your reviews and experiences

All this talk of the MGS Hard Rock Challenge and the ball test recently has me thinking about the hardware...
I know I *should* be gaming one model, and probably one I'm fit for at that. But the cheapskate in me just can't pass up on a free wayward ball, looking for a home. Nor can I bring myself to just toss the 24 pack of two piecers I walked away from Christmas with.
So my question is this - what do you do with the random balls you might come across one way or another? Do you keep em all? Hit them into the woods? Do you have a threshold of quality that determines if it's a keeper or a leaver?

This is a thread for those who are interested in reading or sharing golf ball comparisons!
Personally, I am in the stage of personal ball testing to try to find my next gamer for the next season or two. As such, I have been and am in the process of testing a variety of premium golf balls to see which fits my game and personal preferences. My posts in this site will be coming from off my new website (linked here for those who might want to check it out: https://griffinc6.wixsite.com/golfreviews) and will be in the form of a head to head matchup between two of the balls I am considering. During my tests, I will be taking two different models to the course and playing 9 holes with each in the same round, same day, and same conditions. In my posts, there won't be much in the way of technical data other than distance (measured via Shot Scope) but will rather be how I experienced the balls in terms of distance, spin, flight characteristics, performance and fell around the green, putting, quality, durability, and consistency. Once again, for my posts here, these are by no means a scientific test, but rather what I prefer, what I see, and how the balls perform for me. Therefore whatever performs for me might not translate to your game or your experiences with these products. I also invite everyone to post your own comparisons, head-to-heads, and reviews here as well!
Now that that is out of the way, let the discussion begin!

      Testers Wanted (10)
Fresh off it's stellar performance in the MyGolfSpy 2019 Golf Ball Buyers Guide (Read it Here) the newly released Snell MTB-X is taking the golf ball world by storm.  Within two days of the study the ball was sold out on Snell's website. So what's all the fuss about, can a $32 (Less if you buy in quantity) ball  really perform as well as some of the "Big Boy" balls?  Well that's what we want you to determine for yourself.
Ten members will be selected to receive, test and keep a dozen Snell MTB-X balls (your choice of White or Yellow) then report back on the forum your experience and thoughts of the ball

The new 2019 Snell MTB-X is a 3-piece tour ball designed for lower driver spin, higher ball speeds, reducing “ballooning” with irons and providing excellent feel around the greens.

Your attention please.... after much deliberation and analysis we have come up with our list of 10 lucky spies who will be giving these balls a thorough test.
