Cracked Vice Pro from indoor use

Recommended Posts

Over the winter I played an indoor league from Jan till March. Once a week. I bought a sample pack direct from Vice end of December. Over the 3 months I played the PRO,PRO SOFT, PRO+, and the tour. One ball was played per week. And I rotated thru them all. And the the last 2 weeks of the league both PROs cracked on me .I believe it was on driver hits. My swing speed is between 112-117. Ball speed 160-170.

I emailed Vice over the issue and the said due to the "high speed spin" design of the ball. When it hits the net it generates too Mich heat and there for cracks the ball. They recommended I play a surlyn ball instead urthethane.

Does this seen right? I've never heard of this before.

That sounds shady to me on their part. I wasn't happy with them when I tried them and to see a ball do that from indoor hitting only tells a lot I think.

By that logic, tour pros should use surlyn as well?

Not a very satisfying explanation from a company that should stand behind it's products.

The sudden stopping of the ball against a screen or net decreases ball life. It isn't your swing.

Lame...

I'm not buying it. I'd imagine the friction/impact of striking a ball with a club would generate (instantaneously - due to friction & compression/expansion) more heat than flying into a net. Me thinks they probably sold a bad batch of balls. Not the end of the world.

Almost 20 years ago I broke a Wilson Staff Smartcore with a tee shot. I contacted them and they sent me some balls for my trouble. It looked to me like it split right on the seam from the molding of the cover.

Not sure if their explanation is scientifically sound or not, I'm not an expert.

However I have cracked balls indoors before and I've seen it much more often in simulators than ever on a course.

Whatever the reason may be, I do think there could be something to balls being more likely to crack when used indoors in a sim than outdoors on the course.

I posted this on the other site as well and some1 posted a link to something Dean Snell said....

"typically, when golf balls are hit that many times, espcially with a lot of drivers, you will see some balls crack over time.. they are made to pass random location driver hits of over 100 drivers at higher ball speeds... I have seen many times over the years when a player orients the ball in the same spot, and hits drivers over and over (especially in cages or simulators) the balls will have a tendency to crack earlier than 100 hits..."

Makes alot of sense to me I guess I never realized how that could effect the ball. But coming from Dean..... I believe it.

Vice did send me a sleeve of tours and a sleeve of pros "for my troubles". Granted I did have to place an order with them to get the 2 free sleeves. But I got free golf balls. I'm ok with that

Glad Vice provided some balls for your trouble albeit with another order.

Seems hard to believe that so much heat is created when hitting a net to crack a ball and also not dissipated after hitting the net.  I am sure a materials engineer could talk to heat retention and how it effects different compounds.  Snell's response makes sense if you are hitting a ball over and over with same orientation, hitting same spot over and over.

Anyway, glad you were taken care of...

Not saying I completely buy their specific rebuttal but I think there could be something there. I end up cracking at least 1 ball every session at PGATSS on the net/sim and I'm there probably twice a week. Not sure if it's the net or the mat. Compression trauma may be more aggressive against the mat rather than grass.. maybe? . They use some model of Wilson/Staff mid comp ball. On the field, I'll scuff the dimples off of a ball before I crack it. weird!

Yep, add me to the "I crack balls when hitting into a net" crew.
I've cracked premium balls of various brands when hitting into nets.

I tend to use an alignment line on the ball to line up my drive and I still use this in a sim as well as out on the course, so you're hitting the same part of the ball over and over.

On course you hit maybe 10-14 drives. You can hit that in less than 10 minutes easily on a simulator, then go on to 20, 30, 40, 100 driver shots in a small space of time, all in the same location on the ball, all with a secondary impact immediately after launch...

It's a harsh set of conditions for a ball and not replicated on course.

Self taught golfer trying hard to improve his game. Started playing early summer 2016.

I have a net in the basement and I use a ball until it cracks and then put it in my cracked ball "trophy case".   Using different balls with various brands they all crack after awhile.   I wish I could say it is because of my incredibly high swing speed but it is not.  Most of my practice is done with an old 6 iron swinging around 80mph.

As many of us can attest to- you can literally melt a barrel by firing hundreds of rounds through it in a short period of time. This is because, even though it is inert- non operating, energy is expended through it's length during use. Energy expenditures bleed heat. Heat is bad for longevity. I don't see why it would be any different for golf balls.

I owned a retail golf store 15 years ago and we had a Full Swing Golf Simulator. Don't pretend to know the science but we cracked balls of all sorts very regularly. Pro V to Top Flite, it made no difference. I guess if you hit just into a net it would take a lot longer but those impact screens are pretty firm and heavy so doesn't take long for a single ball. We made some of the OEMs send us free balls monthly to use when Demo-ing their clubs

Thought I’d revive this thread after googling cracked vice golf balls. I have their latest 2020 version of the Pro’s. have been hitting them in my sim over winter along with a mix of other golf balls (pro v1, Kirkland, etc) so all balls getting equal duty. Only the vice pro’s have cracked on me... 3 times!  While all the others the covers have worn down significantly but no cracks. 95% of shots with irons, a few with hybrids and next to none with driver. From my unscientific “tests” it appears there’s an issue with the vice balls.. I mean even the Kirklands are still going strong after an entire winter of hitting the same set of balls!!  I did post on their Instagram account but no response. Not going to bother with following up with their customer service will just finish off my boxes and look for another value packed brand.  Oh and my screen is a sawdust mesh. Super soft like punching into a pillow lol.

I've bought a batch of several dozen lime vice pro and vice pro plus before season began.

Not used in a SIM just on course and 2 balls did this... In one week...I swing at 99mph driver so I'm not a fast swinger.

Shocker. Posted on Facebook no reply from them. Not impressed.

This is interesting that it is not an isolated incident and that even with the objective increase in quality from Vice this seems to keep happening indoor use or otherwise. I know that Vice has supply chain issues but so does everyone else and disheartening to hear their customer service leaves a lot to be desired as well.
