I was wondering what are some of the unique tournament rules you all have played in?

 

I'll start things off, a course near my mom's house has a tournament every year on the Saturday and Sunday of The Players. The course's scorecard matches the stadium course, meaning 1 is a par 4, 2 a par 5 and so on. So you and a partner play best ball along with a pro drawn from a hat. They include dinner at the end of the round while all the scores are added up. Goofy door prizes are handed out to the team that draws the winning pro and teams that beat their pro's score.

Not in a tournament but we have a couple of scrambles (our boaters/golfers group) where we give out 'prizes' along the way. The prizes are a 1/2 doz different small stuffed animals that you earn until the next person in your foursome earns it after you. For instance one of them is a shark so the first person who gets a ball in the water receives the shark - but gets to hand it over to the next person in the foursome  who gets  a ball in the water. A monkey for whoever got the ball in the trees (OB), A  beaver for whoever didn't get it past the ladies tee, and so on. The person who ends up with the most number of stuffed animal prizes gets the 'booby' prize. By the way the ladies in this scramble format play from the men's tees so they could 'qualify' for the beaver as well. Just another way to add fun to a scramble

Those are the same kind of prizes this tournament has too. I know the group whose pro helps on the most holes gets a cart cooler full of beer because all they must of done was drink beer. The group that had the least help from their pro gets a backpack full of golf stuff since they had to carry thier pro around lol.

At a club that I was a member, on July 4th we had what we called the "red, white and blue" tournament.   It was the best two net balls of a four man team.   Each team was assigned an A,B,C and D flight member based on handicap at 90%.   The A player used the "blue" or back tees, the B and C players used the regular "white" tees and the D player used the forward (senior) tees.   Unfortunately for me, it was not age but handicap that allowed the use of senior tees.

We used to play a glowball scramble. Lightsticks on the tee boxes, and taped to the flags. You get one ball, and that's it. If you lose your ball, that's it.

We have an annual glow ball mixed couples scramble annually. You get a couple of glow balls and unlimited supply of margaritas. It's a hoot and so far no one has crashed a golf cart.

A variation of this is each team draws out of a hat, 6 red, 6 white and 6 blue, as you draw them out, that is the hole you play from that color tee. If you draw red first, then on hole 1 you play from the red tees. And so on until you draw all 18 chips

I have a friends company who holds a charity scramble almost every year. They sell a dream package of one mulligan, one tee shot from the forward tees, one throw from anywhere that doesn't count as a stroke.

Monster day!! 4 person scramble all tees are moved to the tips or further. Par for the course stays the same but instead of playing at 6900 yards from the tips its stretched out and played at 7800 yards! Very tough pin placements but we do get 8" cups.  There are many times you are teeing off from a different tee box for the appropriate hole. Very fun almost every tee shot is driver, I believe the shortest hole last year was 260 yard par 3. Grip it and rip it!

Max two shots per player. Did I mention there were shot tents as in shots of alcohol before the skeet shooting hole? A cigar tent too. Yes, we had to wait for the players to tee off before shooting and no, we couldn't try to shoot the other team's ball out of the air 😂😁🤣 I miss that tourney...

I've played a couple times where the course total (72) is added to your handicap (13) = 85, in my case.  Each played is given a flag, like you would mark you lawn sprinklers with before the aerator comes through.  Name and number (85) are marked on the flag.  Got it so far?  Wherever your (in my case) 85th shot stops, you plant your flag.  Farthest flag down the course wins.  Multiples in the 18th hole? Highest number wins, of course!  You DO NOT want to be the player who plants their flag first, LOLZ!

I played in a bachelor party putting where guys received string and mulligans based on their handicaps.

 

Some were allowed to play as a scramble.

 

It worked out really well.

 

My favorite goofy rule though is the call back. I love that rule - it gets in the head of your opponents pretty good.

Playing in a city tournament next month where it's a handicap team event. Trick is they'll do a blind draw after everyone is done playing.

In the fall when time changes, you know, when time “falls back”. We play our course backwards. So on # 1 you tee off from #2 and so on. Every hole is a par 3 of course. Sounds easy but very few holes are open shots due to trees and blind shots. Pretty fun. Have to be creative.

Just remembered an annual tournament my course puts on, the big cup challenge. The holes are about the size of a 5 gallon paint bucket. The same day they will move the forward tees up to par 3 distances on the front nine so you can also play the big cup par 3 challenge.

 

Another one that my group does is on the weekend before Christmas we all play from the red tees. It come to be known as the Rudolph weekend.

Just remembered an annual tournament my course puts on, the big cup challenge. The holes are about the size of a 5 gallon paint bucket. The same day they will move the forward tees up to par 3 distances on the front nine so you can also play the big cup par 3 challenge.

I say we average about 3-5 strokes better. The biggest difference is hitting 9 iron PW in most greens rather 7 iron lol.

I played a round earlier this year with 2 balls. One from the tips and one from the reds. The reds score was something like 5-6 strokes better...I can't quite remember. On more than one hole, I drove it past the green and had to chip back to get to the pin

 

Pretty sure I had 3 birdies from the red which is abnormally high for me. Both par 5s and one of the holes I drove past the green. Bunch of easy pars mixed in.

On topic, I haven't played anything different than already described. I've always wanted to play in those big hole tournaments and love the ones where you play the course differently than intended.

 

Around the world was always a cool one. Tee off from the clubhouse, get (by any means necessary) to one of the furthest holes away, then finish up at 18. Takes some major creativity.

 

There was also a longest day tourney I've heard of. It was 3 different courses starting from about an hour from home, then half way, then the home course. Your team had to finish as many holes as possible before dark. Score was added to that somehow. Last I heard of that one, it came to a screeching halt when one of the players got a DUI flying from one course to the next.

I've thought about doing this but couldn't figure out how to do it to be fair. So adding the course handicap to par makes it work. This could be a fun Friday night 9 hole game.

I play in a tournament like this every year on flag day. The flags they use are little American flags that have you name and number on a sticker underneath the flag.

We haven't had great success with anything crazy for an official tournament.  We did the big cup thing last year, but our greenskeeper refuses to cut big cups in the greens so we used an 8" fake cup over the hole.  It's like a circular inverted wedge and it's supposed to trap the ball.  Problem is it was raining and the balls got slick and had a really hard time trapping the ball.  Feedback wasn't great so we aren't doing it this year.

 

We do have a modified scramble we started a couple years ago.  Blind draw with A, B, C, D players grouped by handicap.  All players tee off, but then the same person can't hit twice in a row.  So if you take A players drive then only B, C, D hit the next shots and so on.  All players putt except on the par 3's.  Those have designated putters based on hole handicap.  A player putts on hardest par 3, D player putts on easiest etc.  We do a calcutta before hand with a 60%, 30%, 10% payout to the top 3 places.  We also go out as 8-some's so it's kind of fun to have a big group of people.

I play in a 2 day 4 person scramble that has 14 small cups and the remaining 4 are normal size. On the small cups they are just big enough for the ball to fit into them. All cups are cut on the green in the hardest spot imaginable and there are no gimmies at all. Extremely difficult course that plays 7000 yards plus. After the two days you are ready to pull your hair out. But it is a really fun time. Crazy to see 4 person teams hand in scorecards with 8's and 9's on it. And it's always played mid October in Michigan so you might get sunny and 50 or rain/ snow and 30. Its a great time and we look forward to it every year.
