The most interesting club in your bag

What club that you regularly carry is the most interesting or unusual in your bag? For me, it's going to be my Adams Super S 1 hybrid.

 

I'm one of those guys who absolutely struggles to hit a fairway wood with any level of success. So I ended up building this (bought the head as a component when Diamond Tour had a bunch of liquidated Adams gear).

 

The Super S works well for this, as it's the size of a small fairway wood. With the shorter shaft, I end up getting more useful contact on more shots.

 

OK, your turn. Got a wedge that you hand ground? A 30-year old club that's never leaving your bag? What's your most interesting club that gets regular use?

Hand worked by yours truly - I call it the Augusta grind.

 

 

The "no bounce" setup is great for hard pan sliders or fried egg extractions but it's pretty punishing off soft lies. She definitely saw a lot more action when I was still a TX resident.

So far, so good but it has no problem cutting a golf ball.

Does that have a negative swingweight of what, like B-3 or something?

Haven't ever put this one on the scale but following the total shave I wouldn't be too terribly surprised to find out it's in the (A) spectrum.

I wish I had some cool custom grind or custom build in my bag, but I guess the best would be my 4.5 iron in my Cobra One Length set. It's got a graphite shaft and it bent a degree strong to get a better gap from the stock 6 iron in the set. It's basically a 4 iron loft (22*) with 5 stamped on the bottom. I've also got a piece of lead tape on the back of the head to make the feel similar to the rest of my bag. If I wasn't at work, I'd throw up a picture, but it's not all that dissimilar from the usual 5 iron.

I carry my Eye2 2-iron, and that's NEVER leaving my bag. I also carry a Penick 1 wood that's 12*. I hit that better off the deck than my hybrids, which usually get left behind.

Shouldn't it already have the same swing weight as your other one length irons? I thought that was kind of the idea of one iron clubs besides the same length?

Shouldn't it already have the same swing weight as your other one length irons? I thought that was kind of the idea of one iron clubs besides the same length?

So MD, here's the difference. When I was testing the F7's before I bought them, the 6 iron and 5 iron were going around the same distances because the speeds were very similar. I needed to make it different for me to carry them both. The problem with deflating the 5 iron is that I had hit the 4 iron in testing and found it a bit low for my tastes at my speed. So, what's a guy to do? Throw a graphite shaft in there while the rest of the clubs are in steel! It's one swingweight point graphite is D0, Steel D1, but it felt a touch too light, hence the lead tape. Now it feels closer, but still lighter so I can get that speed to launch it better for my swing.

 

In a perfect world MD, I would have opted for the heavier Recoil shaft, like in 95 grams because I do think the near 30 gram difference (82 to 115) is a bit tricky to navigate, but I also didn't want to pay upgrades because I am cheap

I think it is my 712u frankenclub.  It started life as a standard 712u 3 iron until it was bent to 18.5* and has the shaft length 1/4 inch over the standard 3 iron.  It is kind of like a 2.5 iron that I can hit under the wind at my club.

The only wood I have ever hit with any semblance of consistency is my TaylorMade Firesole 4 wood with the original steel shaft.  No luck in finding anything better yet.  I don't remember the last time I saw a steel shafted wood in someone's bag.

Nothing to see here in my bag among this crowd. It's very unusual for the norm but it is very MGSish.

Mizuno woods, Maltby hybrids and irons, SCOR wedges, Yes! putter (will be retired for an Evnroll) and a Cleveland smart (arse) sole.

 

I like supporting the "little" guys if the equipment works....and they work well for my.

Mine would also be a 65 degree wedge. No name brand that I bought off a friend for $5 in 1997. The better I've got, the more Iv appreciated it. These days I probably get up and down with that club more than any other.

Nothing too crazy for me but most are surprised that I have a utility 2 iron in the bag with the Titleist 712U. I tried a hybrid for a couple years but I can hit this thing pretty well most of the time and my left to right misses are much tighter. My average distance was probably better with hybrid but I had a larger miss.

I am going to say not just one club, but the set I got when I was 12yo and I still have and still take the iron out occasionally. They are Titleist Lite 100s, I won't hit the woods cause they are still descent and I am afraid what I would do to them now.

Most interesting club in my bag would have to be my 46 degree titleist vokey sm4 wedge. I ditched the pw in hopes for greater accuracy. So far no complaints

Psssst. .... that's hybrid.

It's an ironwood, which is a cross between an iron and a hybrid. The clubface is closer to an iron.

For me it's not necessarily a club but "clubs". My whole iron set to be more specific. While there is nothing particularly odd or different about them, it's the brand and appearance that gets quite a lot of attention. I play the Maltby DBM forged irons. Maltby's a brand that "you don't know about it unless you know about it". I haven't played a round yet where somebody doesn't ask or make comments about them and they play just as fantastically as they look. 3h + 4 - GW.

Probably my cobra baffler 4-5 wood. It's the short shaft one they came out with a few years ago. I love it and MattF can attest that I kill it. Gonna get a better fitted shaft for it soon but I don't think it's leaving the bag anytime soon

I like this thread a lot.

 

For me it's not a club so much as I've never carried more than 13 clubs. I carried 11-12 in college depending on the course.

 

Driver, 3, 3-p, 52, 59 and a putter. That's enough and keeps things less complicated!
