Got Fit for new irons

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I am still a pretty new member here but I wanted to share my recent experience getting fit for a new set of irons. Let me apologize for the length in advance.

My current set is old and is in the super game improvement category (Callaway Diablo Edge). I got them when I got serious about golf 4 or 5 years ago and they have served me well but it was time to move up to something else. Early last week I made an appointment to get fit for a new set of irons at a local club. The appointment was for this past Friday and to be honest I didn't know what to expect as I have never been fit for my clubs but I knew if was going to buy new ones then I was going to make sure everything was right.

I get to the club and check in and am given a couple bags of range balls and told to get loose and they would start getting things ready for me. While I am on the range they start wheeling out fitting cart after fitting cart and a track-man device. I thought this was really cool and somewhat intimidating.

So 2:00 comes and its time to get started. I had hit a few different irons at a store in the last couple of weeks and thought I knew what I wanted but I told the fitter that I just wanted clubs that fit my game and I was not loyal to any brand.

The fitter takes this device off the Mizuno cart and attaches it to a shaft/head that will measure multiple parts of my swing, I am not sure what all it measured but I know swing speed and swing tempo were two of them, he said that the data helped to determine which shaft would suit my swing. I took 4-5 swings with that and we were off, my swing speed was 85-89 with this device on a 6 iron if anyone is curious. First was the Mizuno JPX 900 Forged, I really liked it and hit it well. Next was the Titleist AP2, very nice club but I just did not like the feel. Third was the Callaway Apex, fourth the Ping i200, last was the TaylorMade P790. First club eliminated was the AP2 because it just didn't match me well and the numbers showed it. It finally got down to 2 that were pretty close, the JPX 900 Forged and the Callaway Apex. After hitting about 10 more with each and changing shafts a few times it was clear that the JPX 900 Forged with True Temper XP105 shafts were gonna be the ticket. The ball flight and distance were great and much better than what I am currently playing. So once we went inside and starting talking price when he told me JPX set just dropped price I couldn't resist and placed my order for a set 4-GW and T7 wedges in 54* and 58*.

So there you have it, I know I rambled on extensively but I am stoked to get these in my bag and play them. I will update you all once I get them in this week and play a couple of rounds with them.

This was very cool experience and I highly recommend it for anyone.

How about your lie and length of your irons?  It sounds like standard worked well for you.

Awesome! I love my Mizunos. I don't see the Cobra fitting cart there though? Great to hear that you took the time to get fitted. Congratulations on the new clubs!

I'm headed over to Atlanta tomorrow for a long club fitting (driver, fairway & hybrids).  I won a contest on Twitter for a free fitting at Club Champion.   I've never been fit for a driver so this should be an interesting day.

That sounds like a great experience. What was the device that was attached to the club to measure the parts of your swing? I love technology. My Ping fitting was old school but it worked.

They had ping g400s but the fitter thought my swing speed and current game was suited more to the i200 in the ping lineup. I have hit the g400s on a simulator and did like them but the distance was lot shorter than I expected.

Sounds like a pretty awesome day!  My only concern with fitting is the day to day variability.  But I suppose you just assume the best and make a decision.  Better than going in blind and just picking the pretty ones off the shelf.  No regrets so far??

I can't speak for the OP however since my fitting I am hitting the ball better than ever.  Now I need to get to work on my pitching, chipping, & putting.....    I believe with my clubs fit for me, I can shoot some really good scores this year!

I picked up the irons and wedges today—— so nice!! And then played a round and what a difference from my previous set WOW! These things are amazing and the T7 wedges are off the charts.

Now I just need some time to dial in the distances and my scores are going to drop.
