Hey everyone,

 

About 18 months ago I picked up a golf club for the first time ever, and quickly realized that no driving range on earth with nets could contain me. I grabbed the driver and immediately launched multiple moonshots that exited the entire range with its huge nets...dead right. Every ball I squared up was going 150 yards forwards, probably 150 feet high, and literally 100-150 yards right. They were majestically frustrating. As I moved on to trying to weird shovels and continued to try to tame the fun stick, it was readily apparent that I had never been so bad at any game or sport in my entire life. As someone who has identified as an athlete playing highly competitive levels of baseball, volleyball, basketball, and others, this was a complete shock to my system. Unlike the sports I was used to where everything, everyone, and the balls moved, this one just sat there glaring at me, and repeatedly infuriated me by going anywhere but straight, and anywhere but up (besides the driver). I had absolutely no understanding of why the clubs were the way they were, what was actually happening with swing mechanics and contact, and for the life of me could not stop swinging from my heels and landing on my back foot from baseball. 

 

Since then, I have invested pretty much all free time into digesting information, learning how and why everything works, and sooo much practice on the range to develop muscle memory and consistency. Unfortunately, my poor form caused two injuries along the way which lost me a good chunk of time, but I am not deterred. A year ago there was absolutely no chance I could shoot under 100, and last week I shot my first round sub 90, at 85. 

 

With my background in engineering, I really appreciate the approach that MGS brings to the table, since there is an incredible amount of false, unfounded information and advertising in golf as far as the materials and statistics go. I'm excited to join the community!

Welcome Mike. Where do you normally play?

I live at the southern tip of NJ, and the courses I have been playing are Mays Landing, Harbor Pines, and McCullough's in Egg Harbor Township.

My father in law is part of the ownership group that purchased Mays landing a few years ago. I go down there to play quite a bit. McCulloughs is a fun course too. My favorite in that area is twisted dune

Nice! Maybe we could grab a round and a beer sometime this year. Twisted Dune is next on my list, hopefully after the aeration is done.

I totally agree with you, I haven't been able to find many good blogs or youtube channels chronicling improvement from beginner status. Other people improving gives tons of inspiration and confidence that we are unable to get just from ourselves. Pretty sure I'll start a blog on here doing that, and maybe it'll spur others on to do the same and we can all improve together.
