Who gets more hole in ones? Low ball hitters or high ball hitters? For that matter who holes out more on their approach? Im a high ball hitter with nada for aces. I chip in on a regular basis though. The couole aces Ive seen wete run ups and in the hole.

The better golfer who players more frequently. I've seen five aces in my life, my two and two others. One ran up, my son's as a 10 year old kid and three that were high, well struck short irons.

Actually we didn't see the one go in. It was hidden by a trap. But when we got to the green it was in the hole.

Rev if I get a hole in one and can't see it go in I'd be kind of upset. I want the celebration on the tee box. Don't get me wrong I'll take it. Won't be the same walking looking for it and finding it in the hole. I want it to disappear. Also to answer your question I have the lowball hitters having a high percentage of a hole in one. I really don't have a reason why.

I was lucky to meet and spend some time with Art Wall back in the early 90s. He was wintering in Sierra Vista AZ and I was stationed nearby at Ft Huachuca and I played and practiced at the course in town. He was the 1959 Masters champ but was more famous for making aces in competition. I don't remember the actual number but it was ridiculous. 30+ as I recall. Anyway he attributed that to being a little guy who hit a low hook with a 10 finger grip. All of his iron shots landed on the front of the green and rolled out to the hole, and since they were all rolling like a putt some of them went in. He was much prouder of the Masters win, which included a 32 on the back 9 Sunday, and of being on a winning Ryder Cup team. The aces were no big thing to him.

Charli,

I didn't see mine go it. It was dusk which made it hard to see to the flag. The pin was on a down slope a couple of paces from the edge of the green with a bunker right behind it. When I hit the iron it was pin seeking all the way, but I could of sworn it went in the bunker and not in the hole. Just couldn't tell. Walked up to look for an embedded ball and didn't see it so now I'm thinking it went over the bunker. Happen to check the hole and there she was! It was a high shot to the green. The other two almost hole in one's were in FL a year apart on two different courses. Both elevated greens so you really couldn't see the hole. One missed by a half turn of the ball and the other by an inch. Can't complain, both were easy puts for birds though 😁.

I've had a hole-in-one and didn't see it go in because the shot was uphill. I agree it might have been cooler to see from the tee, but the celebration on the green was pretty good too.

I've had two aces.  One flew directly into the cup (rattled the flag) and the 2nd one hit behind the hole and spun back in.  I use to hit the ball high.

I've had two, the first one was in junior citrus league in Florida, I was 12. I smacked an old wooden headed McGregor 4 wood into an elevated green. Never saw it go in. I was searching in the woods behind the green for like ten minutes until a buddy I was playing with putted out and found my ball in the cup.

The second was in a charity match play tournament my college put on every year. I was 2 down with 3 to play. The fellow I was playing against hit his tee ball within 10 feet or so. I am just thinking to myself I got to hit this close. The ball hit probably two feet past the hole and spins right in the cup. I would go on to win the round.

To answer your question I hit a high ball, and I believe it's a lot of luck. So the more opportunities you have, the better your chances.

The one we didn't see was incredible - 70 year old guy, recovering for a heart attack, not much of a player in the first place. Very short par 3 at Mequon Country club in WI - Beautiful summer day it must have been July 23rd because that's summer there. :)

I digress. I never mess with anyone's swing but his alignment was horrific. I got him to line up straight at the hole (finally) pulled 9 iron for him and he hits this beautiful shot straight at the pin. But the pin is hidden by a trap. It's a scramble, we all hit good shots and there are only three there. Everyone thought mine was in but it was about 5 feet past. Rob's was the ball in the bottom of the cup.

He lived off the second hole at the Bull in Sheboygan Falls. He'd give me bags of Pro VI's after that even for the first few years after I moved to Florida.

Great guy, tremendous day to be with him for that.

Ive hit a few sticks along the way, landed them inches from the cuo, slun them right next to the cup but no go. It will come aa I play quite a bit weather permitting.

Surprises a guy like Trevino isnt on that list being a bump and run sort of guy.

I think it depends on the roll out after it hits the green. The course I used to be a member of I had two because I got plenty of roll out and they just ran into the hole. The course I play at now, the greens are much much softer and usually any ball I hit into them will hop and stop, even with long irons.  There's only been 2 aces at that course of the past 5 years that I know of and both were made by guys that landed them short of the green and let them roll on.  It's much harder to slam dunk one in than to hit the green and let it release into the hole.

Not only would I be upset if I didn't see it but also if I was playing alone and no one else saw it as well (for corroboration).

I've had three; one last year. Never saw the first one go in.  Of the three... two were low-to-medium flight balls, and the one last year was a high ball that landed by the pin and kicked sideways into the hole.  One of my best friends who passed away 8 years ago at 85, made an ace with his driver at his club in Naples FL a couple of years before he passed.  With a pond in front of the tee, he sliced his driver around the pond, and the ball never left the ground!  It was his second ace.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm gonna say lower ball flight with rollout makes more for the amateur golfer. Just like a bump and run chip will go in more than a lofted pitch with spin.

I have never made one and I am a high ball hitter. A low ball guy making more makes sense in theory to me as it gets on the ground with a chance. I have peppered the flag but still no luck.
