Hello all, I'm just starting over in the game after 16 years of not playing and I'm having issues. I'm seriously thinking about golf lessons and establishing an even more vigorous practice regime. My question to the group is how to deal with the following when standing over the ball knowing it has to go a into a 4" hole that seems a light year away:

Posture, address, ball stance, grip, arms, backwing, swing path, shifting your weight, patience, club face square?, downswing, attack angle, and follow through.

I'm playing Callaway XR16 driver, fairway and OS irons with an outside to inside swing path, hitting off the toe of all clubs with slice most of the time with an occasional hook.

Geoff

Lessons are a great way to invest in your game. Especially if you're willing to practice. A good instructor will limit you to working on just on or two things to work on at any given time. Don't over think it.

I think you're overthinking it. Try to make it as simple as possible. For me, I play some of my best golf when I'm not really thinking about it. But lessons go a long way for sure. Definitely consider looking into that.

Way overthinking IMO.

Get a few lessons to learn good setup and grip for your body. Once you have the basics down, and by down I mean that you've practiced just those few things at home, at work, in the yard, you name it, all the rest will fall into place much easier.

Right now I have basically 1 thing to think about with my setup, one backswing thought, and one downswing feeling. It gets me around the course.

I agree with everyone... too many thoughts there.  Find the right pro and get an evaluation.  It may take awhile, but the time and money spent is well worth it.  Don't go down the path of "I can figure this out myself".  Been there, done that, and had to completely start over to get rid of swing flaws I created.

You have to fix the outside to inside swing.  Place two tees in the ground a little wider than your club head and swing the club between them.  Don't need a ball.  Hit the inside tee... toe shot; hit the outside tee... heel shot.  If you can consistently swing between the tees, you are on the way to eliminating the over-the-top swing and toe shots.

You should not have swing thoughts when playing.  Just trust it, and only think about your target.

Bud your stressing me out about my Own game. I think your overthinking this and lessons will simplify things for you. They helped me with the inside out swing. Of course I mess it up every now and then. But I know the feeling and can correct on my

Own now.

Swing thoughts are for the practice area and not the course. The more relaxed and free of swing thoughts on the course you can be the better.

Lessons are a great investment and require the work to be put in afterwards to entrain the thoughts/movements from the lesson

+1 on what all those other guys have said!

The more you practice what a good instructor has shown you, the more you'll build up confidence in your swing .. and the better you'll start to move through your swing without the hindrance of 1,000,000 excessive thoughts .. from short putt to full bomber swing off the tee.

You might try some essential oils/aromatherapy to quiet your mind. That would probably help more than anything at this point.

+1 on all the advice above.

Basically get the fundamentals right i.e grip, posture and alignment then fire away. After that seek out a pro/coach to help you develop

Over thinking is pretty much an issue we all have. Your brain gets in the way of the swing. Get into a preshot routine so you don't think about it. That's why the pros back off a shot when they get disturbed so they can rest and take the thinking out. Lessons are always a great idea!

When working on your swing you can only change one or two things at a time.  A good pro will be able to determine what to work on first.  There is so much information out there on instruction it is easy to choose something that sounds great in a YouTube video that will make you worse.  It is also easy to keep looking for that one magic YouTube video that will fix your swing in just a couple weeks.  Coming up with a long term swing plan with some help from a pro is a good way to improve in the long run.
