Mr_Theoo
I haven't noticed any changes in my swing I think only because I've had plenty of lessons during my weight loss. I will say getting to certain positions are easier and I feel more stable throughout the swing. tony@CIC
I only lost 12 lbs but the big emphasis of my program was strength and flexibility (did yoga for golfers). I just started up playing a week ago after a brutal winter and found the following two results after the 4 month program: I get the rotation and follow through that I didn't get before (talk about flexibility I can even touch my toes - not bad for a 71 yr old). The other is the additional distance I'm getting. In fact I now have to redo my distance charts because I'm getting an additional 10 yards/club year over year. So I'm assuming the between the yoga and strength training has resulted in a higher swing speed. BIG STU
I have went on a new diet so to speak. Not really hard. I am off the bread, pasta and potatoes which I love. I also do not do cream and sugar in my coffee. Also cut out the 3 or 4 donuts at the truckstop at 5AM every morning. Been on it about a month and have dropped about 10 lbs or so. One thing I have noticed and I have not asked my doc about it is the fact since I went low sugar/low starch my joints do not hurt as much and my flexability has improved. I am really turning on the ball good now. Now some of you guys will remember I had lost a bunch of weight a few years back. Overall I have dropped about 60 lbs in the last 10 years. That Avatar picture of me is at least 10 years old. I do know I have a lot more stamina and energy since I cut the starch/sugar thing. I have gotten a new doctor since my old one retired. This Doc has been a golf playing friend of mine for some time and knows me well. By trade he is a heart specialist but he wanted to take over my health care. So he did. Now he sat me down and told me he wanted to take good care of me so he needed to run all the tests to determine. So at the first of this month when he did my annual DOT physical he went the "full Monte" so to speak. Did the heart thing and all. He was impressed that my Cholesterol was so low for a big guy and my A-1C was good too. In fact he remarked that both were better than his and he is only 45 with an athletic build. He believes that I was mislead into thinking that I had low blood sugar and was piling on the carbs and sugar. He had me on the stress treadmill test thing and I did the brisk walk thing for 5 min 37 seconds. He was impressed by my heart rate etc. The only reason I backed off at that time was my left knee that I injured last year after a truck step tumble started hurting. He did the pictures of my heart too.In fact he told the tech lady "you can put his live heart pics up on the screen he likes stuff like that" Got to watch my own heart live working. He is also a good Christian man and goes to the Episcopal church that I do (yeah Rev I went back) and the first thing he told me after the tests. "Man God has something for you to do" He told me with his experience he would have bet the farm that I was a good candidate for a bypass but my arteries were clear and circulation excellent. He said of course for a big guy I was very active that I was either working or playing golf or piddling in the club shop. I think he has me on the right track Edit Footnote---- BTW Rev I will take 3 a side from you still come on with that swing you gotta! Now I have my answer!!! There is flexibility and strength training in my program. In fact I just completed a workout. I'm seeing some increase in distance but it's not consistent so clubbing is a bit of an issue. I'm not overly concerned as I know it will work out in time. I was curious about what all of us have experienced. Remember too that I have a new driver and different irons. Just lots of new stuff to deal with. Then I came on here and you had posted the same answer--- Wow I am impressed, Gotta be true because I was smoking the ball today! Done something else a 61 year old man is not supposed to do. I played with a set of 1957 Macgregor blades stock with the old heavy Pro-Pel steel shafts. Held up for 18 holes with them. I just found those clubs yesterday on the scrap pile. Actually my Doc was on the range and commented on how well I was turning on the ball and my swing speed through the ball. Must have not been overswinging or anything like that because my back is not stiff and hurting and I did not take any Advill today either. I know he last 2 weeks I have been hooking the snot out of the MP-68 blades and those are hard tipped S-300s too. BTW Rev lately I have been playing a different set of irons every week for the last 2 months or so but did keep the Mizzys in for 2 weeks straight. revkev
Thought I'd bump this I've incorporated a golf swing speed specific training program into my fitness quest. Has anyone else out there tried this? I played yesterday with very interesting results. Everything felt weird the first few holes and then it started to kick in. Even though the swing felt weird on 2 I hit it to a spot I haven't been to for five years. More telling I was forty yards ahead of guys whom I'm only a bit longer than. I actually had a decision to make about going for the green or not on a 480 yard par 5 - didn't like the forced carry over trees so laid up right and wedged on but we had that drive at 256 on the GPS. (That's sea level with very little roll and no wind aid). I hit two or three more really well and out in areas I haven't touched in a number of years also. On a negative note I had trouble finding the right slot with my irons and got stuck inside a few times - hit two six irons that really hurt me from posted big a good score. I also hit 39 shots with putter. (A few of those were Texas Wedges). So 79 was a reasonable score. Going to hit the practice green on my way to work. HeathS16
