Getting older

I just finished my range session and work out.

 

For the younger guys on this thread of you aren't taking proper care of yourself just start now! It's tough to do at 61. I wish I hadn't stopped in my 40's but I let the stresses of life get the better of me.

 

Working out doesn't take any longer than laying on the couch with a bag of chips.

I had my first bilateral knee replacement in my mid forties.  Later I had a scope for torn meniscus then a few years later a total knee replacement.    Hang on buddy the fun is just beginning!

A burning sensation and arthritis??!!?? This does not sound good at all........

Results are in, no arthritis in my hips or knees. So, best guess at this stage is that my past is catching up with me in terms of beating/having beaten my body up...the money was great but long term, maybe not worth it.

I guess I am the only one who has regained lost yardage. For the past couple years my drives have been in the 195-205 range. Since trying a tip from a friend who is an instructor, I am now driving 215-240 yards. That's right! I am amazed, but it has put me back in approachable range.

I've gained a boat load of yardage since getting fit for my Ping G400 Max.  I'm playing the 45.75 stock length which could be one reason (longer shaft) with a bigger swing arc.  Plus I'm have more confidence so I'm able to swing through through the ball at contact instead of putting a guide swing.  I lost a ton of club head speed = distance when I was afraid to grip it and rip it.  I'm hitting drives out there now that's peeling mine and my buddies eyelids open.

Back in the early sixties everybody slicked their hair back.  I used a product called Brylcreem and Vitalis was a popular grease application too.

I just turned 50 in January, so I'm in that middle ground where I don't feel as old as I really am, but I'm beginning to realize that I'm not 30 anymore, either.  I played Saturday and in the middle of the back 9, I realized my elbows were getting sore.  Not so sore that it changed the way I was playing, but enough that it was noticeable.

 

So, have any of you guys encountered this?  I play Ping i20's with stiff steel shafts in them, and I'm wondering if it's time to make a switch to a different shaft.  I've tried a couple of graphite shafts in the past, but they felt so floppy, I couldn't hit them and didn't think I'd be able to get used to them.  Would a regular steel shaft help this?  Has anyone made a switch because of wear and tear on the body?

 

I'm just pondering the idea of making a change, and wondering if I need to.

I did play stiff shafts when I first started (used Ping Zings), one because didn't know any better and they felt OK. Somewhere in my early 50's switched to regular shafts steel mostly. Then I went thru a multitude of irons some graphite some steel but I always liked steel. A short time (70) ago went to graphite senior shafts. Switch came from arthritis in my hands and obviously slower swing speed for age. I'm happy with the setup, my hands still can hurt but can deal with it. Hope I helped a little. Good luck, getting older is a journey. Mostly the trip is too a doctor

I would recommend seeing a good teaching Pro before a big change.
