New Member - Advice sought

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Just recently joined MyGolfSpy as a member, having read online for a long while!

Hoping some people can give me some advice/guidance after just realising at the weekend what a waste of a club my current hybrid is...

I currently play a Cobra F7 3 wood (15.5 degrees) then have an RBZ Stage 2 5 Hybrid which is 25 degrees, then into my irons 4,5,6 etc. So I probably have too big a gap between my wood and hybrid.

Then, I play mostly links golf, so a high-flying hybrid isn't really much use in the constant wind of North East England and it doesn't fly as far as a well-struck four-iron either.

Does anyone have any guidance on what hybrid might be the best fit between a 3 wood and a 4 iron? Would there be enough distinction between a 3 wood and a 3 hybrid?

Cheers,

Sam

Welcome Sam most of our members will tell you a fitting to find the right gap distance wise and the right shaft for your ball flight is the way to go. It's not easy to suggest such a thing since a shaft can make the same club play totally different.

Welcome to MGS. There are hybrids that go down in loft to the 16* range and can easily fit thengal you need to fill between 3 wood and 4 iron. I have a 3 hybrid that fills my gap. Best to go try a few and see what works best for you.

Yeah, I think maybe a 3 hybrid would probably bridge the gap for me too, just been stuck with the 5 for so long think I've been kind of overlooking it!

Welcome to MGS! tommc23 is 100% correct that a fitting will do you best. For me personally and how I like to use a hybrid, I have an 18* Titleist Hybrid that is turned down to 17.25*. Its maybe a little strong for some people but I'm more comfortable choking up to make some gap yardages work instead of having a shorter hitting hybrid

Welcome to the forum, Sam.  Personally I don't get along with hybrids, but the rare event I do hit it well, my 3 hybrid fills the gap between my 3 wood and 4 iron.  With that out of the way, the others in this thread have left you some great advice.  I am going to echo their sentiments and say go get a fitting from a reputable club fitter.  We're glad you have joined us on the forum.  Keep asking questions on the threads, there are a lot of great guys in this community who are willing to help and lend some words of wisdom.

Welcome and kudos for coming straight out with a good question.

Not sure what your irons are but the loft on your 4 iron and your RBZ hybrid sound about the same.  I think a "typical" 4i loft is around 24 degrees, so if that's the case it seems you have 2 clubs with identical lofts, which probably doesn't help in your gapping.

I have the same F7 3 wood and you can adjust the loft on that a bit so that gives you some flexibility there.

If you plan on sticking with your 4i at around 24 degrees I'd suggest trying for something in the 18-21 degree range for a hybrid.  This would hopefully fill that gap between the 3w and the next club.

Welcome! By design, hybrids are made to fly higher and a bit further than say a fairway wood. Switching to irons would be ideal but long irons are harder to hit. Maybe a 5w or 7w that fill in the gapping?

Welcome, and the advice you've been given so far is excellent. Not much to add other than not discounting a 5w in place of the hybrid based on the lofts you need. You have a lot of options available to you.

Welcome to MGS from Metro-Detroit.

And I second what tommc23 said. Get a fitting specifically geared towards gap testing. There are many variables that they can help you consider when choosing how to close that gap.

For me, I went with an Adams Red hybrid between my 3 wood and 4 iron.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I play Cleveland CB16 Irons, and they're quite strong lofted, the 4-iron is 21 degrees, so less than my hybrid... but if I'm striking the ball well, I'd kind of just ignore my hybrid all together, so yeah, maybe a hybrid around 18 degrees would fit the gap between my wood and iron. Think I'm definitely losing yardage in this area, so think a fitting to work out my distances and looking for around 18 degree hybrid might be the answer!

Cheers,

Sam

Yeah, maybe a 5 wood would be a useful addition. I like the versatility of the hybrid though. Playing links golf you get lots of nasty lies where you can't get a wood to, but a hybrid can play through it, so they have their benefits!

Cheers,

Sam

Yeah, think that's a fair assessment haha! My 4-iron is 21 degrees too, so hybrid is up past that. But then the forgiveness it offers is kind of a safe rest-point when I'm not striking the ball great. Think the general consensus is to look for a hybrid around 18 degrees!

Cheers for the advice.

Sam

Welcome to the group.

You don't have too big a gap between your 3-wood and your hybrid, you have a chasm (11 degrees).

As has been covered, to some extent - your hybrid not only doesn't fit between your irons and your 3-wood, it all but replicates that of your 5- or 6-iron (depending on the lofts of your particular set of irons) or maybe fits between them. ... So without knowing what set of irons you're currently gaming, it's really going to be hard to answer - other than the fact that without ditching one of your irons, yes, your hybrid is useless/pointless.

For example, my iron set is: 21* 4-iron, 24* 5-iron, 27* 6-iron, etc.
As a result my hybrid (4h) is intended to replace my 4-iron being as it's 22-degrees.

So, if your irons are similar to mine, and you want to keep your 4-iron in your bag, you're going to need a hybrid somewhere in the range of 18-degrees.

Welcome from the Pacific Northwest!  Glad you joined us.  The RBZ is a great hybrid.  I played it for many years, and we play in a lot of wind on links-style courses.  I found it to be longer than an equivalent iron of the same degree loft.  I used a 5H that fit my gap after my 5i, then played a 3H.  Since you are happy with your 4i, a 3H at 19* would be a good place to start, but find the correct gap.  Not all hybrids play the same by a long shot!!  The shaft will make a big difference.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Welcome

I will chime in because I'm skimming the replies this one didn't come up - I think

(Caveat - a fitting would be the best move)

Baring a fitting or other professional consult you have for options - a five wood, a three hybrid (around 19 degrees), a driving iron, a traditional 3 iron.

Sounds like you've already eliminated the 5 wood and I would assume the 3 iron as well (even touring pros normally sub out these anymore). So for you the question is hybrid or driving iron.

Test some out and see how you hit them - there are tons of different design offerings within the hybrid category and you can pick a wide variety of used hybrids up for a song.

IMO there's very little difference between a 5 year old hybrid and a current model.

Good luck
