Playing with my boss

GeekingGolf

Recommended Posts

So tomorrow I am playing in the same group as my boss and yes I hear is really good. What is the etiquette for playing to boss? Do I play the same tees as him? Do I go for the win if possible? Are there any rules for playing your boss that I need to know about? First time so any help would be appreciated.

Give them the honors, play your game. Enjoy it. My boss beat me by 3 strokes last time, now we are teaming up for a bunch of events this year.

Being I know your line of work, I'm guessing the boss is a LDO? Haven't played with O's, but they're just people too. Have fun!

Haha no CO and XO in the group I don't have a chance to beat them most likely unless I play out of character

Honestly I used to play with my boss all of the time we enjoyed seeing each other hit great shots and laughed at the duffs. There were times where he wasn't playing so well and the laughs quickly come to a stop. But on a golf course you're equals IMO

I play with my boss all the time. First few times I was super careful with etiquette just until I got a feel but now we bust each other's balls regularly. It's a great networking opportunity to get out there with your boss and his friends.

He's shorter than I am so I play up a set of tees. I guess you could say I have more ability but our scores always end up pretty close anyway. Half the time we don't even take a scorecard. Our games compliment each other pretty well so we'll get on scramble teams together 2-3 times a year too.

Just play your own ball as well as you can and keep pace. Don't worry about who "wins." No one cares about that. Use this opportunity to chat about stuff other than work and enjoy being on the course.

Agree completely! If he gets any hint that you're holding back in any way for his benefit .. that could be perceived as insulting.....

I think it may have been Ray Floyd that said: if you really want to get to know a person, play a couple of rounds of golf with them.   Over my professional life, I have found that statement to not only be accurate, but valuable as well.  It is a two way street, that is, you will get to see your boss outside the office environment and they will get to see you outside the office as well.

My advice is to play the same tees because it will provide more opportunity to just talk.   Outside of that, just be yourself and play your game.  To do otherwise would mean that back at the office, you will be playing a game in order to maintain a  persona for which you are not.  Such can make one's professional life more difficult.   Remember, that on a golf course, sometimes the object is that it is a venue where the "walls don't have ears".   As such, it provides the ability to have free, open and honest discussions, a scenario that the boss may be purposefully arranging.   I know I used the golf course to make observations regarding bankers, vendors and staff members.  In the office environment, it is difficult to determine what ya got, on  the golf course, you will learn a lot more about those with whom you must deal in your professional life.

I've never been in this situation before, but as most have stated above, be respectful and courteous as always-that is a given of course. That said, if I were up against it, I certainly wouldn't hold back or lay down at all. Play your normal game as if it's just another round where you've been paired up with a 2-some or 3-some as a single. I've had to do this several times when I can't play with my regular group but want to play anyway. Defer to any requests they have like what tees they want to play from, but just be yourself. Indeed give him/her the box/honors to start (or at least the option), but if you grab the box...hammer down baby!

Play golf. Golf is a game of respect and courtesy, all while trying to win.

Also, the social aspect of the game reveals the character of the people you are playing with. Let your real self show through while stealing opportunities to prove you're an asset to the business.

Tell him you are a traditionalist and you play Stymies. Refuse to mark your ball if you are in his line and make him putt around you.

He should appreciate your knowledge of the ancient game.

This is the game I use when playing with my little brothers. No courtesy, no mercy!

For fans of the movie, BASEketball, my friends and I will play psych out golf as well. Complete with insults in backswings and stepping in lines of putts.

My response, if he is a real golfer there is competition following through him. Being a"boss" adds the dominant male factor. If it was me and I had the ability I would crush him. Need to establish pecking order early.

Handle it as normal when playing anyone for the first time. Discuss tees and settle on the best option, strokes - do you all prefer to play straight by the rules or will it be a casual round.

Find those things out first and enjoy it.

I've often played with bosses. I had one who was the biggest cheater I've ever played with, never lost a ball in the woods, never had a bad lie, always played for money but he had a vanity handicap so it offset. :)

I play with congregants a lot. Technically they are all my bosses. We always have a blast.

That happened a few years ago when I just started exploring the game again. I remember it all too well. My final score was a.... Get ready..... 123! I did get to keep my job, so all was not lost. My current boss is about my handicap so when we play, we have a great time.

Haha, I was just thinking about this. The last time we played I remember saying, I always hit a fade around this corner (it was his first time on the course, so minor navigational tips).

Set up for my fade off the birch tree, and I found the only shrub within 1000 yards, just buried in it, dead straight with zero amount of fade...

Tried the hero shot ended up taking 4 to get out of the dang thing.

Moral of my story, take the unplayable...

That's funny Shankster I remember being 15 playing golf with my dad for the first time it had rained some so it was wet. I was across the fairway from my dad as he was about to hit. He takes a rip at it slips down with a loud THWACK ball flies hits the only branch on a rotting tree falls straight down to the ground below. I look down at my feet and realize I had begged him to use his only pair of golf shoes that day

Give him both barrels. You e got plenty of friends... you ain't look to make anymore. Come out strong, drop cheeky little comments like “ha... I never go back to back birdies... must be my day!” Then birdie the next. STONE COLD.

At the turn, shotgun a couple of beers and then tighten the screws. After about the 13th mumble under your breath... “game over...” just loud enough he can hear.

Boom.

In saying all this, My boss is a best mate of mine so I can get away with all this lol!
