Match play screw ups

Recommended Posts

We all know that in March play you have to be careful and also be aware of where the match stands and aware of opponents trying to possibly steal a halve on a hole because you were upset or weren't paying attention to where the hole stood in the match.

Scenario, hole 9, you have Team A and team B. Team A has 1 in for 5, team B also has one in for 5, team B missed birdie putt, par 4 given. Team A has 6 feet for his par, he looks at a player on team B and says is this good it doesn't matter, team B Captain says pick it up, team B's other player (me) says NO!! That's for par to tie. Too Late team B captain already said it's good. We lost the match by 1 stroke.

I know there is a rule that intentionally misleading an opponent in match play is loss of hole. I'm not sure if this was the case, but.... it seemed a little misleading by the question. It also may have been that he thought his partner was in with 4. I'm not sure.

So when you play match play, make sure that you and your partner are in agreement for allowing the opposing Team to pick up. This did not directly lead us to losing the match there were about 6 putts from shortish range on our side that caused us to lose, but this could have made a difference heading to the back nine. We could have been up 2 instead of 1. My partner was not playing well, so he wasn't thinking clearly at the time, the other team took a little advantage of that I think.

Boy that is interesting. I believe that if you were right there saying "no that putt does matter you need to putt it" the opponent would have a difficult time claiming the putt was conceded. I know that's not exactly how it played out but I think you would have been well within your rights to overrule your partner on that one

It was just after I missed the birdie, I was walking up to get my ball, and it happened just as I was picking up my ball. I just heard the exchange, it happened pretty quick, but he had already picked up his mark. I do think he mislead my partner, but it's very difficult to prove that. My partner barely had the words pick it up out of his mouth and he was already picking it up, so I think he knew what he was doing. It's a friendly match so it's okay, I told my partner after that, that we would not give putts without discussion first. I missed 5 putts that were from 6 feet and in that could have changed the match in our favor as well.

The partner rule in matchplay should be that if a putt is not a true glimmer, and it is to tie the hole, it needs to be putted by the opposing team.

I'm sorry but if you're playing me in match play the only gimme you get has to be within the putter handle. That way someone doesn't feel like they give you one at 4' and you didn't give them one at 4'(even though theirs was a sidewinder breaking 2'). And I expect the same, if it's in the handle then it's a pickup on both sides for everyone. I make that clear on hole 1. Only exception is, if you're putting for bogey or worse and I have a birdie putt than can be easily 2 putt. Just makes it fair IMO

Well he provided wrong information at least. Not a real classy move

I agree, a putt isn't given unless A. It doesn't matter to the outcome of the hole, ie. He's got 5 feet for 6, and I'm putting for 3. Chances are if he needs to putt that, I screwed up not him.

B. It's within 6 inches of the cup. I don't like to give putts but I am pretty reasonable about doing it. I always have in my mind, that I have to putt everything. I play that way until someone says, it's good. I never ask if a putt is good, because being the numbers guy I am, I always know where everyone stands in the match

There is a mind game aspect to giving putts. Give the opponent a bunch of 3 footers until the pressure is higher and they are needed. Making them putt everything will keep them focused on having to make everything.

I'm going to jump in before someone replies with "four ball" or "foursomes match" instead of team match play. We all know what team match play means. No one actually uses the USGA terms outside of the USGA and pedantic forum corrector cops. "Actually, the correct term is blah blah blah yadda yadda barf."

I am aware of the Ryder Cup best-ball and alternate shot formats. I just had never heard of same being used at a club or local amateur event level.

Around my area two man team events are usually best ball stroke play format.

I believe a lot clubs have a Scotch (alternate shot) tournament.  We start ours this Saturday and it goes through the summer.  It's super competitive and a TON of fun!  Quarterfinals and on will have sizable crowds watching the match, both men and womens.

We play it as the team must consist of either an A & B golfer or B & B golfer (A=11) off of the course handicap.  Strokes are given per handicaps etc.
