Body or arm/hands golfer ?

Recommended Posts

For me, the better I'm playing the less I even think about hands and arms.Almost like my body hits the ball and I don't have to worry about manipulation or timing of club release.Where many have had success all hands and arms?

What works for you and why?

Keep it in the short stuff

Guess I'm in the arms and hands category even though I have a bit of the body involved, just not as much.

When I stop consciously getting my hands through the swing is right about when the huge slices start. This never used to be the case.

Big muscles rule the swing.  I am more of a visual player and in my mind I'll usually carry just one thought.  At the moment its keep the shaft angle flat on the downswing...all else usually falls into place.

Only place where I can control the shaft angle is my backswing. And my pro wants me to feel that the face of the club is slightly closed at the top.On the ride down, I let the whole right side of my body beat the clubface to the ball.If I do that successfully, that shaft naturally gets flatter and a draw will be the result. Not automatic yet,but I now see how focusing on the big muscles is so effective. It feels to me like a swing that will hold up under any type of pressure. And might be a swing you could use forever with low maintenance

I agree! Convince your mind to trust it and there is no reason you can't make this work.

I think it is a feel thing and each person needs to have a specific feel. I think that both have to work in unison to have an effective swing.

This right here. I tried all sorts of thing I saw on Youtube and read online and I was a mess. A few lessons to get an understanding of what *I* needed to work on resulted in a few feels/thoughts that finally clicked for me.

To bring it back around to the OP's question, it's body driven but aiming on the downswing, if that makes sense. I feel my shoulders doing all the work and my body reacts to that.

Since I didn't answer the OP question. For me I am a hands/arms feel with the arms pulling the body through. If I focus on the body turn I end up blocking the ball right or flipping and snap hooking left.

agree all the way.And yes , shoulders. He told me if I'm off to feel like I'm hitting push fades.I never want the face of the club to flip over at all.All great replies here.Would like to start a thread someday. That will address a swing style suited to casual golfers or ones not super athletic.Would turn into a good dialog that may benefit someone

I try to keep my body out of it. I want to be as still as I can with my body and legs. Just turn the arms back, when I feel the left wrist try to break my downswing starts. When I get turning wirh everything I get out of sync

That's pretty much what my swing was built from, and I agree that would probably be better suited for another thread. When I took lessons, my pro asked me what my goal was. I said I wanted to be able to get around the course and have fun. Don't have any plans on competing (at least, not for a while anyways). So we worked on finding a few simple feels/moves to help me keep the ball in play (mostly!) and have fun without getting complicated. No I can't draw/fade the ball on command or flight the ball well (yet) but I know what to do when my swing goes sideways to get through a few holes until it comes back. And a lot of that is just relying on my body to swing the club and not rely on timing with my hands, wrists, etc.

Body synced and connected with the arms. If my arms get away from my sides, and hands get going, it's “all she wrote”!!!

I swing with my jaw.

Meaning. If my jaw is tense, so is everything else. So, during the short waggle I focus on easing everything up. From there it is hands, arms, torso, hips almost simultaneously. Then once the backswing has been complete, reverse that order.

If I don't finish the back swing I have to get the heck out of the way and I usually block it.

As Chubbs said... it's all in the hips.

Or in my case jaw.

Yes..a million ways to swing a club. But only one right way per individual. And it isn't using part of one method and a few parts of another. It's using the same method not adding or subtracting from it . This is where most of us go astray. Nothing ever good comes from mixing and matching

My driver swing is body, everything else is arms.

I remember seeing a video years ago of a swing coach talking about the ability to deliver the club head square to the ball being the only thing that matters . He demonstrated some seriously awkward and ugly swings, but delivered the face square and every shot was solid.

I've been working on this a lot lately. I had 10 or so swings with my driver the other day where I focused on hands/arms during backswing and then hips and legs on downswing and crushed the ball with a slight draw. Not sure if this is where I'll land, but certainly searching for my cues.

I think that's a big thing for any golfer - finding the cues that allow you to make YOUR best swing. I know when I think "aim the hands" on the downswing, my body reacts by starting a weight shift with my lower body. So what I think is my arms/hands is really more body.

The arms and the body need to blend and be in sync.  For some golfers the arms naturally fire very fast so concentrating on the turn will help sync up the swing.  For me my arms trail my turn so focusing on my hips and shoulders opening up is a disaster waiting to happen.  At the top of my backswing my "intention" is to move nothing but my arms and hands, absolutely no shoulder or hip turn.  If you saw a video of my swing my hips and shoulders are moving in sequence (I think.... haha).  What to focus on depends on your individual swing.

I find that if my feet are doing what I feel they should, the swing is ok. That being said, I'm probably a "body" guy, with a good dose of hands thrown in- my legs and glutes (activate 'em!) Are the main movers here, but my hands begin and finish (impact, +/- 10" or so) the swing. Everything after impact is just kinetic energy. A good tell is if I'm on my outside back toe, outside front midfoot/slightly to the heel, and my hands are a little above and maybe a little behind my front (left) ear. (Full swing, anyways)

I think most use too much body. I believe it's proven with long drives being hit with a person on their knees, feet together or one legged swings. A body swing feels more powerful but it's not faster. For me if my core is firm I can do anything. If I'm lazy with my core anything can happen.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have to try and feel like my arms are making my body turn. If I don't do that I get a horrible slide with my hips and I then flip my hands at the ball. That can be the difference between shooting in the 70s and shooting in the 90s

The body, arms and hands all play a role. Using just hands/arms one can generate more speed than just using the body. It's about seauencing all the parts properly.
