Players distance irons

LoganT

Recommended Posts

The ideas is Game Improvement style gains but in the a Players style head. Usually its more forgiveness than a CB, higher launch, lower spin. This (in theory) creates an easier to hit lower lofted club that should provide golfers with more distance. For me personally, I find them as intriguing/useful replacements for long irons in a blended set.

1. What's a "players distance iron" ???

2. Are you suggesting a modern clubset with jacked up lofts compared to your oldie goldies ???

He is talking like P790's, Forged Tec Black, Rogue, Epic, PXG, TMB. Basically hollow construction heads (sometimes filled with your favorite softer material) that have weight low in the head and stronger lofts to create high launching irons that also produce less spin for increased distance

... Pretty much what the OEMs tell you the benefits are. Longer, higher trajectory and less spin. I am playing the P790's and they are the first irons I have played without a trade off. Amazingly forgiving, a full club longer than my previous players irons, very accurate and launch high enough to stop on the greens with less spin than non distance players irons. I have added the 4 and 3 irons back into my bag, something I have not done in quite a few years as those slots were taken up by hybrids. But the P790 long irons are so forgiving with plenty of trajectory and longer than my hybrids.

It has pretty much already been covered, but yeah, more forgiveness and more distance, with the same appealing look of a player's iron.

Other irons in that category are the i200, AP3, and the C300 and C300 forged.

It is a category created between players and GI irons and seems to have been established as a category in the last couple of years.

I have the TMBs in a full set as well as the Epic Pros in a full set.  I would say that both fit this category and coming from playing blades most of my life these both tick all the boxes of what I am looking for in an iron.

I switched to P790 in October after playing blades for 20 years. Longer and much easier to hit with no drop off in anything except maybe a little work-ability. And they are gorgeous in the bag and at address.

Thanks guys. When I hear distance in an iron I automatically think of less spin. I don't want something that won't spin enough to stay on the green but it doesn't seem like the case with these irons. Also I prefer a “players” style head

Sounds like a line such as the C300 Forged would be right up your alley.

Hey, isn't the MGS forum getting ready to test these irons and the C300? Looking forward to see how these irons stack up.

They are both players distance irons or crossover in Wilson terms. The C300 is more about the distance aspect and the forged are more about feel and playability.

Don't forget about the Srixons!  Might be the best 'players iron' made in the last couple years...

At least according to someone that hits a lot of irons.  :)

A buddy of mine who is around a 4 hc or so just went from a set of Nike blades he's had for years to Callaway Steelhead XR pro irons and he's getting MAJOR distance out of them.  At least a club more and a ton of height with not as much spin.

He's able to spin the blades so that the ball stops pretty close to where it lands; with these he's getting more roll out - small adjustment but it's noticeable.

Other thing he noticed is that the ball goes straight...very straight..

Well as I mentioned in the other thread about clubs being too large I do believe clubheads will shrink a bit with the development of these hollow head irons. The forgiveness built into the hollow head allows for a more pleasing, traditional blade look, but with the forgiveness of a cavity back.

Now what you can expect from Players Distance Irons? I think many here have already touched on the benefits. Higher ball flight in the longer irons with the same or greater distance with just slightly less spin.

I just took my Hogan's to the range today strictly to A/B the standard Ft. Worth long irons and the Ft. Worth Hi long iron replacements. Now, the standard Ft. Worths have C Taper Lite steel shafts and the Hi's have Recoil graphite shafts but the Hi's are definitely easier to hit and might be a few yards longer, but it's the height that is the big difference. They fly much higher, and land softer.

Wouldn't the Mizuno JPX 900 series fall into this category as well?

... This is a new category and I think there should be sub categories as all "distance" players irons are not alike. I think the terminology was created for irons like PXG, P790, Forged Tec and T-MB's. Hollow irons with very thin faces designed for more distance on not only center strikes but around the perimeter. But OEMs have jumped on this category as a hot new iron sales opportunity and quite a few players irons have snuck on the list. I would not include irons like i200, 900 Forged or C300 Forged as I would just call them players irons.

... Fwiw, I hit my Cobra Forged Tour 7 iron about 165 and my P790 7 iron is my 175 club. Add in more forgiveness with the 790 and it was an easy call to make the switch from irons I have been playing the last 3 generations in the Amp Forged, Fly Z+ and FT's. But the real no brainer is the P790 long irons. I have put the 790 #4 and now the #3 irons back in my bag replacing either hybrids or thicker hybrid like UDi's because they are both very long and very forgiving.

  • 1 month later...

Still finding these clubs a bit to large ,look forward to sleeker designs in the future.

Can't wait for someone to figure out how to make clubs look like a blade, feel like a blade, with a slightly longer blade length, like 780-790mm, but be as forgiving as a SGI...

they'll sell like hot cakes... anyone have a milling machine?

Edit: no foam filled goo either. Those already exist.

I just don't see that as physically possible. Perimeter weighting and variable face thickness are the only two ways that I'm aware of to make an iron more forgiving (ie perform better on off center hits.

To look like a blade you wouldn't want perimeter weighting and to feel like a blade you'd need one-piece construction, which would take variable face thickness out of the equation.

You think even with the longer blade length to be able to move weight around? That's almost P790 long.

Don't forget p790s are hollow bodied so they're able to move weight off the face and back to increase MOI, insert tungsten on the bottom to lower cg to increase launch, and they use variable face thickness (thinner face along the perimeter of the face) to generate more ball speed on off center strikes.

I don't think the blade length impacts what they're able to do from a forgiveness and performance perspective. It's the hollow body that allows them to use perimeter weighting and vft

I suck at math haha. I just think if I can dream it up someone with an engineering degree should be able to figure it out.

But everything you said makes sense.

Oh I'm sure they'll be a day where a golf company can do some sort of chemical or heat treatment to a one piece iron head to make the metal respond differently depending on strike location - think variable face thickness performance in a solid clubhead. That would be pretty awesome

Although, I think your JPX's pretty much tick every box:

5.2mm top-line (if it were 4.2.. man)

17mm sole width

77.5mm blade length

.118 offset (.08 would make me smile a little bigger )

30° Loft

These are the 6 iron specs. That's as close to perfect for me as I can find. Perfect, now I have to convince the wife since I just talked myself into them.
