when Johnny Miler retires.................

Topline

Recommended Posts

I know many do not care for Johnny Miller's broadcasting work, but I've always enjoyed listening to him.

I'm not sure about this, but believe that this season NBC may have been testing Peter Jacobsen and Justin Leonard as possible replacements for Miller when he retires. These two guys are likely nice gentlemen, had fine playing careers etc... but I do not find their broadcast work to be either interesting or entertaining. Just too bland without offering the insight I think Miller has always offered viewers.

For a Miller replacement I would not mind Judy Rankin (she is very insightful regarding the shots played, player technique used, player mind set etc...). I also enjoy Lanny Wadkins commentary.  And I believe Paul Azinger would be excellent. And Roger Maltbie would be fine as well, if he moved from the course to the booth.

So those are a few of my favorite names who might be a good fit to succeed Johnny Miller as NBC's lead color commentary broadcaster opposite Dan Hicks. When Miller retires, who would you like to see get his job ?

I'm hoping they put duval in his place. I like Leonard, Azinger and a few others when they do the pre/post game stuff.

I like Judy a lot and recently had the pleasure of visiting with her. I doubt she'd move over to men's golf. Perhaps at a major or something? Judy loves the LPGA and does a great job with it. She's just flat knowledgeable, insightful, and presents the game well. As for Miller's replacement...

I don't know exactly. I've read several good choices above but something makes me think we're leaving someone out of the conversation. But who is that? I like Duval and I believe he's come a long way in his broadcasting but might not be ready just yet for the big chair. There's someone out there. Lanny certainly knows what he's talking about.

I love when Duval is commentating. He's very knowledgeable without coming across as arrogant as Miller does.  Azinger is good too, but I like Duval over just about anybody.

Duval for all the reasons listed above. Jacobsen is godawful.

I as well like Miller. He played with dime sized irons and woods. I'd be a little full of myself too playing like he did at Oakmont with the equipment he had. He was using micro machines and the guys now have monster trucks.

Lost art the way he played. Along with the other greats.

Playing with 1960's and 1970's equipment is another subject. It's worthy of its own thread. Please start one or if you do not want to I will do so.

My thoughts on the subject is that players of Miller's era needed more skill than today's players. I think most people would disagree, but I believe it's true.

Go ahead and start that thread and let me know because I will surely comment on it. I play 60s and 70s equipment all the time along with some 50s stuff albeit 1954 Hogan Precision irons and 1957 Macgregor Diamond Back Tourneys. Remember back in Johnny's day it was ball striking and shotmaking . I think I am one of the few on MGS that collects and plays vintage equipment

We should throw a party when he retires, sure, he knows Golf, but man some of his one liners are horrible. Duval, azinger, Leonard any of those guys.

One of the guys at my club quipped the other day that when Miller dies his mouth will run on for an additional week

I have no problem with Duval, Zinger, Judy & Maltbie all would do great. Jacobson & Leonard not so much. Maybe Jake take Maltbies spot.

Be my guest. I didn't start playing till the mid 90's. But it was with 60's, 70's and 80's equipment.

Duval seems done as a player, so he better practice his broadcasting skills.  Yesterday he shot 80 on a very easy course at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

4 birdies

7 bogeys

2 triples

Followed that up with a 2 over 73 today.

Any body but Jacobsen

I don't dislike him it's just that I find no substance or insight in his commentary.

As for the game way back when requiring different skills of course it did, the equipment and course conditions were different. I don't know that the players then were more or less skilled though, just different.

I'm sending in an application. I'll liven up the place. I am not monotone, and will call out bad shots, and the good.

Instead of “blah blah blah”

It will be:

“Well ladies and gentlemen, that was a terrible golf shot, I'm around a 8 handicap and could do better. Don't watch that garbage.”

Right around the first a in garbage would be escorted from the course, but at least it would be entertaining.

Whoever they pick needs to have an opinion! I could care less to hear a little golf clap from the color guy after every shot, that's the play by play guys job. I want somebody like Faldo or Miller, who, whether I agree with them or not, will at least have an opinion and stick with it. I really like Johnny except for the fact that he is a little too enamored with his own playing record. I think Faldo does a good job of being opinionated wtihout being too much of a "back when I played" guy.

I like McCord---- LOL I remembered he really ruffled the feathers of the stiff necked crowd at Augusta one year when he referred to the Augusta greens "as slick as bikini wax" I remember he was banned from the Master's telecasts from then on.

Feherty is doing a one man touring show. He was booked to do the local theater. Tix sold out in minutes. I was hoping they would add a second show but they didn't. Heard it was very good.

Duval was part of a Wounded Warrior fundraiser here with Jack Nicklaus and Charlie Reimer. Duval was pretty good with an unrehearsed venue.
