2018 Official Forum Member Review - Wilson C300 Irons

Recommended Posts

Have gotten a few rounds in over the past week.  Clubs seem to be pretty solid and forgiving;  I am seeing minimal distance loss on mishits or thin shots.  Distance across the board is on par with my Callaway x-hot pros.  Not seeing any issues with the finish on my clubs.

One of my friends just got a set of the forged out of the blue. He loves them

I hit them a few times- wasn't real impressed...

Kind of “clicky”, to me.

Nothing wrong with that. Sound preference is different for everyone. Other than the sound why weren't you impressed?

The feel- not as soft as I was expecting mentally. But again, I only hit a few shots, so one could get used to anything. But remember, I'm a converted mizzey guy. Playing ap2's Now, on graphite, so that probably makes them feel soft too.

As a new member I have not read many of these reviews yet, but like others have posted, I love that we get this "intro" Stage 1 review.  It's fun to understand each reviewer's background and current level of play.  So, great Stage 1 reviews to the 4 that were chosen!  I'm looking forward to reading the Stage 2 reviews.

My guess is you hit one of the irons with the "power holes", which feel a little tinny to me. The 9, P, and Gap have a much more satisfying forged thump to them.

I think that is personal perspective. It was one of my questions coming out of stage 1; I was curious about how the feel/ sound and performance changed when the power holes went away. I don't notice any difference between the clubs. But that is me, it will probably depend on how sensitive you are in feeling the club during the swing and at impact.

^^^I was just going to post this. I don't agree with his comments on the C300 standard feel/sound, but I also don't play forged irons at all so I don't have a frame of reference. Also some of it's personal preference - what I think sounds like a solid "thwack" to him may sound clicky.

Yeah.....it's weird when he tests clubs in which he is not the target audience AT ALL for them and gives his opinion.

I hit both of them at demo day and agree with his opinion on the feel ... the forged just felt much better off the face than the cast did...that's not to say the cast didn't feel fine but there is a noticeable difference.

I'm liking the feel of them. As to the sound outside of the first time I hit them which sounded a little clunky I don't notice anything out of the ordinary. But I've played with them extensively - so maybe I just got use to the sound of them?

I'm finally getting to the range tomorrow to do the side by side comparison with my Ping's with a LM.

Good stuff.... I was fit for those long ago but I didn't have the $$ to buy them back then so I'll be curious how the comparison goes.

Interesting I never thought of using magic eraser. I've got lots of scuff marks on my C300's so will get to it tomorrow.

That's great to hear!! You'll be able to get back to enjoying the clubs now without that scuff annoying you.

I watched the Rick Shiels video and apart from him not liking the sound, everything else was positive. He was never going to like the sound and feel of the cast clubs, he will love forged for life.

As I get more rounds and time with these clubs under my belt, I need to figure out their distance. Not sure if I was that inconsistent with my last clubs or if these are just a touch longer overall especially with the shorter irons. 4 iron is becoming a question mark due to a lack of consistence, hybrid going back into the bag may be a longer term solution. Need to get some driving range time with the 4 iron to do a better assessment.

I'm feeling the same way with inconsistent distances. Doing extended launch monitor next week to try to get some data to back up the feeling. My suspicion is the KBS Tour shafts are just a little jumpy sometimes. C-Tapers were not available as an option and they've always seemed more consistent

I don't mean inconsistent distance with the club in general. While my launch monitor numbers seemed to show that I was hitting the the same as my calalways, on the course the Wilson's seem a bit longer especially with the short irons.

I am wondering if my face contact on the callaway was less consistent which resulted in less than solid results.

Interesting. Have you put them on a loft / lie machine to compare?

Not for the whole set, just each sets 6 iron.  After looking at my ball strikes,  I do think I am hitting the center of the face more with the Wilsons.  Haven't tried my Callaway's on the course in a while,  maybe I am just swinging better.

So the launch monitor I'm using has almost the exact same data for my C300 as my Ping G20's. However on the course I know they are about 5-7 yds longer. That was proven again today. Also a bit more forgiving with hits on the heel - toe hits not so much.

Am I'm playing better? More focused on hitting the sweet spot? Increased club speed? Don't know but the scores are better.

As you guys get further and further in with these irons, how is the urethane in the power holes holding up? I know Taylormade was having issues with some of their irons. Does grass and dirt get inside the irons from those holes?

If it means anything I gamed the C200's for two years - about 100 rounds and had no issues.

I'm really reading not because of the clubs but to show the approach of other testers. Great job guys - knocking it out of the park.

I must say the forged C300's look great - sadly I've discovered that I need a wider sole in my mid irons - I can go as playery as I'd like in wedges through 8 iron but after the 8 it's best if I'm SGI or even hybrid. That's my swing.

One last observation. It's very difficult to sort through comments when people copy an entire review just to say, “Nice job.” You could accomplish the same thing by going @ - whoever - great review. Remember that these reviews draw people to our forum. Keeping it neat and easy to follow makes it more likely that they will return IMO. It's like fixing a ball mark or divot. :)

I had these out for one final round of 9 holes with my son and my father before I dive into my Stage 2. The power holes are still 100% A-OK - no loss of the inserts or any issues whatsoever on that front.

I let my 67yo father hit them on a few holes, he liked them but didn't feel any difference between them and his Cobras. In fact, he actually hit the C300s lower than his FP irons, however that's only 3-4 shots out of thousands that he has on his Cobras.

I'm going to see if I can sneak out to the range one more time and grab my D200s for one last head to head comparison as well.
