Algae blom Salem Oregon

Ok..a bit ticked at the human race. Salem gets its water from a resevoir about an hour east of town.Big algae bloom so the city has issued emergency warning for the young, old, and immune system disorders to not drink the water.

This created a major run on water and little to none left in town or miles away. Some mini marts were selling water for $50 a case. Craigslist and FB ads selling it for similar numbers. One Fb ad had a guy with his truck and trailer loaded wirh 100s of cases and asking 40 bucks a case. Whike I get supply and demand, but not during an emergency. My city (Keizer) connects to Salem but the city is on wells so we are not affected. Many of Keizers businesses and residents are offering up water for FREE. Just bring containers.

 

Maybe those trying to capitialize on this get a dull and rusty needle to the eye.

that's pretty messed up....hate to wish bad things upon people but these things usually turn around and get you at some time in your life....esp when you least expect it; maybe they'll think about their behavior when they need help from someone else.  

as a former Oregonian I'm really disappointed.

Can they not boil the water they need for drinking and cooking? That's what our water company says to do when issues arise with the supply.

That's usually when there was work on the water line in the area, and that area lost line pressure, and thus the potential for bacteria to enter the line. You can't boil pollen out of the water.

That's horrible - both the bloom and the water pirates jacking up the price of bottled water. We now have annual blooms on Lake Erie caused by runoffs from the livestock pens and farming.

Its a nutty situation all around. Fortunately I was able to get a case for normal price from Costco in a town 30 minutes north that isn't even close to the effected area and even they were down to about a dozen cases left.

When I was in Corvallis on Tuesday night, I got an emergency alert on my cell phone about the water in Salem, around 9pm.

 

Apparently, the toxins produced by the algae are not destroyed by boiling the water.  It's OK for showering and washing clothes, but not drinking.  No word on how long this will last.
