GolfJunkie302's Trip to the Monterey Peninsula

GolfJunkie302

Recommended Posts

I know I made a few posts a while back about this trip being in April, but due to complications, we had to bump it up to June. But the dates are now set for the 11th through the 17th. The amazing thing about this trip is every round is going to cost me just $5. Big shoutout to the Youth on Course program. This is the thread where I am going to post pics, course reviews, etc. Here is the scheduled itinerary:

Day 1

Drive from Seattle to Medford, OR. We'll stop and play at Centennial Golf Club which looks pretty good. If anyone has played here, tell me about it!

Day 2

Drive from Medford to Monterey. This day we'll play Bayonet at Bayonet and Blackhorse.

Day 3

In the morning, we'll play PG, which I'm excited about. In the afternoon, we'll hop on Quail Lodge and Golf Club.

Day 4

Not sure what the plan is for the morning. Maybe get some beach time in or another round at another course. In the afternoon, we'll play Poppy Hills. This should be really fun, especially considering it is going to host this year's US Girl's Junior AM.

Day 5

Another open morning. Afternoon round is at Spanish Bay.

Days 6 & 7

Mostly devoted to sightseeing and driving home. Would love to sneak in a round at Half Moon Bay or Harding but not sure how feasible that is.

So that's it. If anyone has thoughts/comments/tips, feel free to share. Also, if anyone can hook me up at Cypress, shoot me a PM! Anyway, should be a fun trip. I'm getting excited!

You must fit in pasatiempo and del monte. Pasatiempo is a MUST PLAY. Not trying to beat a dead horse; Pacific Grove is ok, poor mans pebble, etc, but pasatiempo is Mackenzie's masterpiece (according to the master himself)

Pasatiempo is a little out of our price range, but I'll take a look at Del Monte for one of our open mornings!

Poppy Hills is in great shape right now! Agree on Pasatiempo being too expensive - it is not worth the $260. I live here in San Jose, and strongly recommend Cinnabar. Top 100 public course, and the antithesis of PG from a ecology/geography standpoint.

Man, it's a shame they raised the price that much. When I lived in MRY back in 2009 it was around $130. Maybe golfnow or twilight will have a better rate.

Half moon bay is awesome as well. Seems like all the rates jumped since the market crash of 2008 so it's probably ridiculous too.

Del monte is a hidden gem. Best greens on the peninsula. The normal rate was pricey as well though. Probably have a decent twilight. I was a Dukes club member and it was relatively inexpensive. Can probably reach out to some of my old crew to score some dukes club guest passes. Send me a PM if interested. All the local caddies and golfers hand out at the bulldog British pub on lighthouse. Great bar for a pint and golf talk. Make sure to stay at Spanish for the bagpipes at sunset walking down 18. Always a good time.

Check golf now for Pasatiempo they always have deal for $170. Still pricey but much cheaper and it is worth it.

Wow, I guess I'm going to have to hit up Del Monte then! It is also a $5 course, so I should be in business. Thanks for the tips!

Time for an update...

1. Centennial is having a big tournament the day we were going to play so we decided to play Eagle Point instead. It is a Robert Trent Jones II design so it should be a good layout. It's kinda funny, we're playing three of his courses on this trip!

2. I finally decided on which putter to bring. (This is usually a guessing game and I often guess wrong). As louck would have it, the SC California Monterey is the one working for me right now! 20180606_154953.jpeg20180606_154918.jpeg

3. Quick poll: I played with a guy about five years ago up at my home course in Seattle. He told me to call him Big Lou. He is an opera singer from Carmel. About 70. Anyway, we had a great time. Should I try to hook up with him for a round at his home course?

Okay, the plan is to leave early tomorrow morning. Everything is packed and the clubs are clean. I'm not sure how many photos I am going to post during the trip, as most are going to be on my SLR. I'll definitely do a picture-heavy write-up when we return.

I'd hit Sharp Park in Daly City on your way home. Under $50 to play an Alister Mackenzie design.

We had a great round today at Bayonet! I was surprised that it was foggy at 4:00 in the afternoon, so a little chilly, but still a fun time. I'll post pics once I upload them at home...

Love that course. Played at least 4 holes everyday for 27 months. Did they finally develop the houses etc? When the rough is up it's one of the most difficult around.

Another day in the books. PG this morning was super fun. The backside surpassed my expectations! Quail Lodge in the afternoon was also fantastic. I think it is an underrated course. It was in pristine shape and the greens were rolling super fast (about 11-12). Beautiful course. Spanish is tomorrow, so looking forward to that.

I realize I haven't posted in this thread for a couple of days. Internet was a little spotty. We got back yesterday and I finally got all my photos uploaded so here they are!

First up was Bayonet. With the PGA Professionals Championship (which starts today), the course was in great shape. It was pretty cool having the ropes, leaderboards, and tents up — made it feel like a tour event! PSX_20180617_093754.jpegPSX_20180617_093553.jpegPSX_20180617_093236.jpegPSX_20180617_092945.jpegPSX_20180617_092509.jpegPSX_20180617_092040.jpeg

Second day began with PG. Man, that back nine! It was a little foggy but still amazing. PSX_20180617_094032.jpegPSX_20180617_094624.jpegPSX_20180617_094212.jpeg

After PG, we went straight to Quail Lodge. It was in amazing shape — best greens of the whole week by far. Probably the best conditioning overall. Seems like a pretty underrated course to me. It was the perfect weather for golf, too!PSX_20180617_094817.jpegPSX_20180617_095147.jpegPSX_20180617_095517.jpegPSX_20180617_091545.jpegPSX_20180617_095350.jpegPSX_20180617_095655.jpegPSX_20180617_091410.jpeg

We played Spanish Bay the following day. I have to say, this was my favorite course of the week! Just a fun layout right next to the ocean. At the end, they even gave us all bag tags for free!

PSX_20180617_090511.jpegPSX_20180617_090226.jpegPSX_20180617_095847.jpegPSX_20180617_100104.jpegPSX_20180617_100255.jpegPSX_20180617_100418.jpegPSX_20180617_100556.jpegPSX_20180617_100914.jpeg

The last round was at Poppy Hills. Another great track. The guys in the pro shop said the conditions were almost perfect, presumably because of the US Girls Junior Am next month.

PSX_20180617_110023.jpegPSX_20180617_104424.jpegPSX_20180617_101310.jpegPSX_20180617_104559.jpegPSX_20180617_104743.jpegPSX_20180617_105014.jpegPSX_20180617_104859.jpegPSX_20180617_105137.jpegPSX_20180617_105340.jpegPSX_20180617_105610.jpegPSX_20180617_105904.jpeg

Okay, just got to the end and realized how many photos I just uploaded. My apologies! But here are two more. The legendary Cypress Point... PSX_20180617_084101.jpeg

Lastly, the 18th at Pebble Beach:PSX_20180617_101147.jpeg

Overall, it was a fantastic trip. I still can't believe my total cost for greens fees was $30! Although we missed out on some big names, we still got to play some incredible tracks. Hope to get back there soon!

Great trip and wonderful photos. I'll be at Poppy Hills on Friday (live 1:30 away), so good to hear about conditions. I turn 40 next year and thinking of these courses except swap Quail Lodge for Pebble and add Black Horse - or just spend that $$$ on the Open at Pebble! How about food, wine or beer? Did you make it to Alvarado Street Brewing per chance?

I'm underage so I can't help you out in the wine/beer department, but we did eat at a great Mexican restaurant in Carmel called Pescadero. Great Fajitas with fresh tortillas and several kinds of salsa. We also ate at Gianni's, which serves pizza, pasta, etc. It was pretty good. We sat next to the guys who played directly behind us at Poppy, which was funny. We also had seafood at a place on Cannery Row, but I cannot remember the name. Pretty good for the price. Have fun on Friday!

Oh how we miss PG! That muni is really a gem of a course isn't it?. I have pics from the driving range with deer literally 10 feet in front of me. I had to stop hitting and just wait for them to finish their lunch but but I didn't mind one bit. On the front 9, there was a hole (forget which) where there were literally 20 head of deer just laying around the tee box. If you ever make it back and like to go hiking, there's an old logging trail behind Poppy Hills that I used to run every day to clear my head.

I turn 40 next year and thinking of these courses except swap Quail Lodge for Pebble and add Black Horse - or just spend that $$$ on the Open at Pebble! How about food, wine or beer? Did you make it to Alvarado Street Brewing per chance?

A few other courses worth considering that are a little off the path but very budget-friendly are Del Monte, Monterey Pines, Rancho Canada and Laguna Seca. But if you're looking for that seaside golf experience without murdering your wallet, PG Golf Links is a must!

My wife is talking about getting us US Open passes for our 10 year anniversary, Father's Day, My 40th next year (they're all relatively close). :D Under no other circumstance would I be remotely excited for my 40th birthday.. but this is a reason to rejoice.

Yeah, there were so many deer at that course! I was surprised there were so many right on the peninsula.
