Wedges: Theory v. Reality

Recommended Posts

Our Sponsors

I'm slowly replacing an old knock-off set of clubs I bought years ago, and finally bought irons - my PW in the set is 43deg. I know the theory that wedges should be every 4deg, but I just bought a 50deg SM6 to fill a gap in my current set for $100 through Dick's over the big sale weekend and would hate to replace it already. So, what's in your bag?

Your set is pretty old if the pw is 43.

But all that matters is distances on full swings. Typically want around 10 - 15 yard gaps.

my PW in the set is 43deg.

My 9 iron is 42*. So you could use several wedges.

Here's what I would do, now. You said your PW was 43 and you had a 50 and were wanting others. I would buy a 46-48* (actually I already have a Scor 46 so I wouldn't have to buy one) and add a 54 and 58.

This would give you 5 wedges but a 43* PW is very strong in my opinion.

I said now because before I took my sabbatical from golf, I did not adhere to the 4* between wedges. I carried Scor 46, 53 and 59. I simply chose the amount of roll I wanted after landing on the green and that club long enough to get carry on the green. However, as you can see from my bag below, I have changed to a more traditional set up since I have not played much and do not have the time to practice like before.

Set I just ordered new has 43, current 15 year old set has 46 PW.

Theory Vs. Reality - that's up to you, and your reality is the only one that matters.

But while I'm not going to say you must maintain a 4-degree gap in your wedges, as I guess you have with your new irons, it does seem a bit puzzling that you'd buy a wedge just because you got a deal on it when you knew it leaves you a 7-degree gap (which is pretty much 2 clubs). ... Which ultimately makes we ask, "What's the loft of your SW? And how do you plan on filling in the rest of your set?"

P.S. By the way, Cleveland RTX-3 wedges are on sale pretty much everywhere (including their website) for $99, and you can select the loft you want. ;)

Sorry, should've been clearer - current set has 46PW, and I'd bought 55SW and 60LW originally. Bought 50 as GW @40% off. Now trying to figure out best way to approach new wedges with 43PW in set I ordered.

I'd take the 43 degree PW and 50 degree lob wedge to a launch monitor one another course abs hit some shots to determine if the gap is too big or something that you can deal with. You'd then determine your course of action based on those results

There is plenty of excellent advice here for you. The biggest thing is know your game and where you need the multiple options for loft on wedges. For myself, my PW is 45, and I carry a 52, 56, and 64.

As the numbers show, I have larger than 4 degree gaps in my bag, which may not be ideal for some people, however this set up is what works for me and the way I choose to play my short game.

I don't have much to add here.  Know your wedges no matter what loft.  Be able to hit carry numbers and know what the ball will do after.

This was my thought as well - my instructor has a TrackMan. To answer following question, set I bought are AP3s.

Agreed - love MGS for questions like this as folks are knowledgeable enough to have thought through their choices. My current plan is to play with new irons and driver, and keep old 3W, 4H, SW and LW and see what I feel I need along the way.

Wow, didn't realize the PW was that strong in the AP3.

If my set PW was that strong I would get the set gap wedge, which for the AP3 is 48 degrees.   That would leave me with two more wedges to put in the bag, which in this case I would go 54 & 60 or 53 (52 bend to 53) & 58.

Your instructor has the trackman so definitely take advantage of that before you make any decisions.  If you use your gap wedge for full swings, I would seriously consider buying the AP3 Set Gap Wedge

I've been trending to this line of thinking - originally thought of 58 w/ bounce for sand, but may have to sell the 50 and go with set. I'll wait til irons get here and play them first - I can only afford one rushed wedge-buy a year, no matter the discount!

Could always have the 50 bent to 49 if you need a few more yards there. 43, 49, 55 (56 bent down 1), 60 wouldn't be too bad to hold you over.
