perseveringgolfer
I like the US Open as its set up tough! We amateurs get it tough everytime we play whether its thick rough or bobbly greens or tight fairways etc so I want to see the best in the world (who are being paid a small fortune to play) challenged with tough golf- it's the same for everyone and the best will always rise to the top. I get fed up seeing another 'winner' at -19 and 25 other players at -18 to -12 When you miss a fairway you should be lucky to scramble a par, not easily get a birdie or better. GregB135
I'm all for tough.. but fair. I like that they set up the US Open course to be challenging, but in past years they've taken that a little over the top. Good shots should not be punished - like drives that land in the middle of the fairway running through into bunkers or hazards; or greens that won't hold a well struck iron from the fairway. A slight miss should be recoverable and a big miss should be where the players expect to lose a stroke for it. Narrow the fairways, grow the second cut of rough a bit deeper, and keep the greens fast but receptive, beyond that, mother nature and the players will separate the best from the rest. I recently read a quote (can't remember from whom) that the US Open course set up should identify the best players in the world, not humiliate them. StrokerAce
I second @GregB135 .... should be tough - hardest test in golf tough - but should also be fair so that a good precise shot is rewarded. my fear is that since Erin Hills seemed so easy last year the USGA will resort to being tough and unfair; hope not, the television coverage will have that part taken care of. revkev
I may actually disagree with the "fair" part. Exactly what is fair about golf? It's not meant to be fair. Equal opportunity - yes - but fair? What's fair about ripping a 300 yard drive down the middle into a divot while your opponent yanks one in the woods only to hit a tree and kick out into a perfect lie in the middle at his favorite number? Also what's humiliating about shooting even par and winning a tournament and then getting paid a couple of million dollars for it? Golf humiliates me all the time, I come back and play it again the next opportunity. I'm sorry but this one tournament a year, to make it tough, go for it USGA - I want to hear a lot of whining - that's when we know the course will be just right. @Shankster - unless there has been some sort of radical change that I'm unaware of Shinnecock will not be a bomber's delight. STUDque
Read that the fairways are wider than Erin Hills... large targets. From what I've heard (NLU podcast), they're wide in parts that don't really matter. If you find yourself on the wrong side of the fairway, you'll be lucky to make par.....no matter how far you bomb it. Besides that, your 'playable area' is very narrow since the fescue is death and it's everywhere. The winner this week will have to be very accurate off the tee. Undershooter
If the wind blows and they are able to get it to play firm and fast, then the scores should be pretty high. I'm a little worried that the course will play soft though. They have gotten a lot of rain in NJ so far this year. As for the Bomber's having an advantage, Ted Scott (bubba's caddie) seems to believe that a longer player has an advantage here. PlaidJacket
Yes. I want to see a tough match this week. I've also heard the FW's are going to be wider. Ok fine. But wider where exactly? From the tee to 250 yards they can be 400 yards wide. Nobody plays there. Hopefully they'll neck them in the 250-350 yard range where everyone plays from. Additionally... how about some deep furrows in the bunkers while we're at it. Better yet, let's have Jack "corn-row" Nicklaus out here doing it for them. That means as many holes as i can get in on Sat. and Sun. morning, then plopping my fat butt on the couch in front of the 70" watching the U.S. Open. As for the tourney itself, I hope the USGA sets it up somewhat tough. I want to see the winner somewhere between -5 and even par. The courses I play if you are more than 10yds off the fairway, there is no way you are making par.
