Drills to get rid of flipping at impact

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow spies!

Just went to adjust my lofts and lies today and Trackman showed my launch angle with my irons a tad on the high side.

Long story short, it seems like I'm flipping the club at impact.

Do you guys have any drills for this?

In the past, I would focus on 2 points:

1) Hips and shoulder rotation to allow the hands to be in front of the ball on the down swing

2) Feel as if the right hand palm is smashing into the ground

I'm pretty sure those will swing thoughts will improve the situation, but just curious if any of you had the same problem and what drills you used to fix them.

Yes yes, disclaimer haven't seen your swing, can't give any advice, etc...

Just want to know what YOU do to keep this under control.

We really need to see a swing video to offer truly useless advice.

But I...

Take a 3 wood, and make your normal back swing to the top,

Do not accelerate, but come through as slowly as possible and hold the wrist cock until past impact.

Make several of these gradually building up speed.

Eventually, you will have to release the club and at that point it will fire into the ball, but make no effort to release the club.

You can see Justin Rose do this before every swing, except he holds it until his hands are below his waist.

My lesson worked on this the other day. A couple things to think about: think about the rotation of the forearms and hands like you're holding a car steering wheel, and the grip is the steering wheel. As you're coming down, it's important to rotate that steering wheel (grip) as though you're making a left turn. What's happening is you're rotating your knuckles down, back of hand as well, and you end-up palm-up, or facing back at you, knuckles and back of hand pointing to the target.

In order row work on this, and to keep me connected, my teacher gave me one of these: impact ball

https://www.playbetter.com/impact-ball-golf-swing-trainer/?gdffi=7e6458fe16f1463782ebd20933396e23&gdfms=1CAA9579F9C146138C87C37F88656254&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&scid=scplp192&sc_intid=192&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIiMT21_zY2wIVi5R-Ch13qgbdEAkYASABEgIpM_D_BwE

I do drills starting with a wedge, hitting just 40 yard shots, working on that steering wheel, with this between my forearms. It REALLY makes your rotate the forearms to get through the shot properly.

All-in-all, you have to get your wrists/forearms rotating correctly to eliminate the flip.

I'm living this exact situation. I want my club to flatten out and lay off a little during the downswing.

To achieve this, I put a club or alignment stick on my arms as I slowly begin the downswing and I want them to fall off my arms towards my right pocket.

The feeling is that my right arm is working closer and along with my body. This causes the club to flatten out and will become more circular for me. I would get stuck and be really in trouble with longer clubs.

Thanks, Rick. I realized this drill works at low speeds and I can get away with my body not rotating. Once I go full speed, if I don't rotate my hips/shoulders, they basically block my arms.

So have to get more consistent at full speed.

This motion helps me flatten out and rotate better. The flipping is being reduced or eliminated because my body is rotating in harmony.

Much clearer now. thanks! But to my understanding, this is more of a drill to flatten your swing path. Is there a direct relation to flipping?

It helped because my flipping was a product of too steep of an approach. I'd run out of room to swing the club and would need to catch up in order to save the swing.

The flatter swing reduced my steep approach and would allow me to be better in sync.

An impact bag would help you square the face and teach you to go through the shot holding the hands off from flipping.

Something that's really helped me on the follow-through is to focus on the butt end rather than the head. Try to create the feeling that you're slamming the butt end into the ground toward the target. I'm not a teacher so it's hard to explain the exact process so my apologies if it sounds strange. I learned that from interviews with both Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose (arguably 2 of the best iron strikers in the game).

Sergio said that he tries to feel like he's slamming the butt end of the club downward and at an angle toward the target (also helps flatten). Sergio's lag and release technique is probably the most discussed and admired.

If you watch Rose's pre-shot routine, he really exaggerates where his club handle is in connection with his body turn. He has a very distinct drill. His swing obviously isn't as drastic as his routine but it puts those feelings together for him. Speed everything up and you have a perfectly sync'd swing. This should help with shoulder and waist turn to make sure they're leading the dance and should help remedy the flip.. additionally, you'll find more distance and accuracy.

Good luck!

As a matter of fact, that is the first swing thought I learned when I picked up golf 8 years ago.

My first pro told me: just picture the butt of the club is a dagger and you are trying to stab someone lying on the floor... it kind of sounded violent at that time, but it made perfect sense!
