Good S1, guys!

 

I know they took some of the suggestions and improved the V2, but it seems to be just as bulky as the old one... too bad!

One of the things I have discovered is that editing is a must if you want accurate stats. Haven't really had any major issues, just getting used to a non analog golfing life.

Are you finding value obtaining all the stats and has it changed the way you play? For example prior to Shot Scope you would play X club for a shot but now you play Y club.

Yes it has changed what I do and how I think on the course. It has shown me that I always play far to short on approach shots and need to go up a club or two.

It has also shown me that I need to be more aggressive with my putting as I am short 77% of the time when I miss.

Interesting how perception and reality can be very different. Thanks for the feedback.

After reading the blog today I thought I would post my current putting performance for the forum to critique...

Those putting stats look solid. Does SS give you strokes gained putting or a putting handicap like Arccos does?

No it is straight data, nothing fancy like Arccos yet. Here are a couple more of the stats you get with putting.

Changed my approach shots as they are too far from pin, plus putting stats show 88% are short!!!   never up never in, explains my average 37 putts.

 

Combined this stat info with a samm putt lesson and I expect now to be getting better, so it has been useful to have this knowledge.

Those shots are from the website on my phone, the app stats look different. I have a huawei P9 android.

It's giving me much more confidence when I chose to go for it knowing that my club selection will go the distance.

It really is like the proverbial light bulb moment. I would look at where I was on the hole and play from "experience", know I am armed with the right information and I am making much better club choices. It doesn't make me hit the ball better but at least I chose the right club to duff 😎🙃

Does it record all the “duffs”, and then include that infor into the database?

 

For example, say you hit 10 shot with the 7 iron. You pure hit 3 of those 10 shots, to 150 yds.

Then say you hit 4 shots a bit chunky, to 120 yds.

Then say you duff 3 to 50 yds.

 

Does it take the avg distance of those ten shots, let's say 108 yds, and then when you're 110 yds out, does it recommend you hit your 7 iron?

Great question.  ShotScope doesn't make recommendations, they leave that part up to you.  The software only provides pure data. ShotScope does record almost every shot you hit, whether you duff it, shank it, or drill it right down the middle.  In the software, all of those results are recorded as a pure average distance which can be viewed in the performance section in the "clubs tab".  However, the system is intelligent. In that same section in the software also provides a performance average, or "p-avg." which effectively eliminates those bad misses, and gives you an accurate average of how far you hit individual clubs when they are struck well. 

 

For example, with some absolutely terrible misses including an encounter or two with a tree, my driver is averaging 219.  But my p-avg. is 261 which is much more indicative average of a well struck drive.  Or in another example my PW average is 118, versus a performance average of 130 which is much closer to how it performs when I am not mistakenly using it as a shovel.

I've used the ShotScope V1 & V2 iterations and there is a "positional shot" tag option built into the interface that (when appropriately utilized) makes your stats much more relevant

 

Example: You find yourself under a tree, 220 yards from the hole with a creek short of the green. The lie is poor and the tree keeps you from making a full swing. You decide to punch a 4-iron from beneath the tree to a safe spot in the fairway short of the creek (170 yard shot). In the process of editing your round, if you don't tag this play as a positional shot, the 170 yard punch will not only misconstrue your distance average; it will also screw up your proximity stats with that club. In essence, the punch shot was the correct play and you executed it perfectly; but ShotScope doesn't automatically recognize the intent and assumes you made a bad swing that ended up over 150 feet from the hole. Most golfers will experience a similar scenario at least once a round (if not several times).

 

I typically have about a half dozen shots during a normal round that need to be tagged as positional. If I didn't go back and appropriately tag those shots, my data would be a useless mess. Moral of the Data - _anytime_ the hole is not your target (excluding tee balls on par 4/5s), the shot should accordingly be tagged as positional. The nuance of intent requires careful deliberation if you are serious about using ShotScope data to accurately assess your abilities.

With out the "positional" option all of your averages would be wrong. As I said editing is very important.

Also its a great way to show off your round in the clubhouse

That positional shot is something I really wish Arccos had. Not so much for the yardages because the smart distance removes outliers, but more for handicapping parts of your game. I've had a few excellent punch shots counted as "poor" because it's only looking at club, distance, and distance to hole. The driving handicap isn't affected in these cases even though it's the root cause of missing the green.

 

But I suppose neither solution is perfect on their own. Hopefully the competition between the two helps create better products for the mass population.

I hope all of the testers have done the firmware update, looks like they have fixed one of the issues I had noticed and we will be able to use it as a watch (possibly)

Not quite, but a TAG won't tell you when you tagged a 300 yard drive.

neither will the shotscope, sometimes career best drive on 18th in a comp on a new course, couldnt wait to get back to see how long it was, shotscope hadnt recorded it and had me down for a double eagle 2 as it recorded the 2 putts only...grrr!

Biggest niggle for me just now is when you have a chip from the back of the green, no problem you say, BUT when you walk over the green it wants the number of putts and fails to record the beautiful holed chip because it demands a putt!!

 

You can wait 30 seconds off the green for it to realise you're not putting but who does that and how annoying for playing partners and those waiting behind to play!

Had this happen 60-70 yards away from the green on an approach shot.  I was coming from a lay up on a course I've never played and I had no idea (outside of a little math from my previous shot) what the actual distance was until one of my playing partners lasered the pin.  My math was pretty close, but it is one thing guessing and another thing knowing what the actual distance is.

Well the update works and all of the missing hazards are there now. On another note I lost the GPS today and it went a little strange for one hole but it was a heavy cloud cover today.

I dont think cloud cover stops GPS signals. Never had my skycaddie lose gps and I've played in heavy rain with thick black clouds covering the whole country
