First year playing hybrids. Loved them at first but currently love hate. I play it like an iron and take a decent divot. Is this a norm?

Have to ask a follow up question first: Did you get fit for your hybrid?

'Why do you ask?' you ask...  Not all hybrids are created equal. Some are designed to be played with a steep angle of attack like an iron, while others are designed for the shallow sweeping action of a fairway wood. (See Titleist's description of their 818H models https://www.titleist.com/golf-clubs/hybrid-golf-clubs )

If your hybrid divots resemble what you see with your irons, then yes, that would be the norm. If your hybrids are really digging in and causing pop ups, you may be using a model that doesn't match your swing type.

I don't take a divot with my hybrid. There is some turn interaction but it's not deep or long and is less than what I take with an iron or wedge

I simply try to brush or “bruise” the turf in front of the ball and get good results.

Gaming Ping G400 3&4 hybrids.

Same here I end up sweeping the fairway or first cut and end up with great results. I'll also mention that I've seen guys hitting hybrids successfully out of rough - I struggle with that unless the ball is sitting up. In the thick rough I automatically go to my irons.

I game Ping G30 hybrids as a result of a fitting (trying several different ones)

Steep angle and looks like an iron divot. No fitting just an Adams Red I found at a 2nd hand store.

Curious as Ive never played one until this year and none of my buddies do. Divot seems to fit the club and conditions so moving on.

Everybody's swing is a bit different and as others have mentioned hybrid designs vary.

We should be aware that there are people, including touring pros, who take small divots with their fairway woods and yet hit them great.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

So why did you love them, and now why do you hate them?  What changed?

Every club hit off the turf should be hit with a descending strike.  The type and amount of the divot depends on the steepness of your swing and the turf.  Your turf in the Willamette Valley is a lot softer than my turf here is the desert.  If I took a big divot, they would be taking me to the hospital.  I guess that is one reason why I have developed a relatively flat swing.

However,  FW and most hybrids are not meant for taking deep divots; slight bruising of the grass or shallow divot.  That's why the sole is wide.  If that doesn't work for your swing, maybe a hybrid with a narrow sole, more like and iron, would be a better fit.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
