GolfSpy MPR
At one point, each of us has held (or will hold) that one putter that was meant for us, the one that, if we bagged it, would have made us virtually invincible on the greens. And each of us rolled a putt with it, watched it lip out hard, and put that putter back on the rack in disgust. And the golf gods chortled. txgolfjunkie
The golfing gods are loving but just gods... The good: That misshapen rock on the hazard barrier that ricochets your ball onto the green instead of the watery grave. The sudden slope in the cart part that propels your ball 90 yards down the fairway and leaves you a short iron for your 2nd on a par 5. The day you're done in 3 hours and impress the wife with your early return home. The ball that is destined for the tree foliage only to have the gods part the leaves so the ball travels to the intended target uninterrupted. The bad: The gods will know when you're on vacation and insure every decent course at your destination will have recently punched their greens or have shut down portions of the course. The random sprinkler head that your ball finds, takes a wild bounce and ends up in the bunker instead of the green. The two day old ball mark in the green that moves your putt ever so slightly offline. The broken, leaky sprinkler head that has soaked an area in front of the green that prevents your flushed 3 wood from running into the green on a lengthy par 5. The ugly: The day you really need to be finished in 4 hours, currently on pace for a personal best, only to get behind a 4 some that refused to let you play through. The one time you walk up as a single and get paired with a chatty person that tells horrible jokes, makes comments about your game, and reiterates your bad luck... Just in case you didn't notice. And finally... If you skip out of work early and lie to your boss about where you're going, one of the two things WILL happen...your boss will call you and when you pick up, the starter will announce your name over the loud speaker for being next on the tee -or- it will be the one day you forget to apply sunscreen only to get a severe sunburn so everyone will know where you were. TheWahoo
What the golf gods giveth, the golf gods can taketh away. The golf gods looked down and saw the sheepherders tending their flocks, which the gods found to be rather boring. They decided it would be more entertaining if rather than lying down in green pastures, the herders were playing on green pastures. So they instructed the herders to dig a hole, get a stick and see who could get a ball or perhaps a round stone into the hole in fewer efforts. Thus the game began and the gods have been entertained ever since. On a typical Sunday morning, my wife leaves for Mass and I leave to the golf course. DrMJG
A good friend was having a very bad day at the links; hitting many a ball out of bounds into a thick woods. Finally, he snidely announced he was going to hit one of his best and newest golfballs directly into the forrest to appease the golf gods. After a mighty thwack, the ball came back with a righteous vengeance and hit him squarely, and with great force, upon the knee followed by taking a path which took the afore said ball directly into a river. The immediate onslaught of laughter from the rest of us, who made up the foursome, mirrored that of the spirits of the course. Note Bene: If one wants to appease the gods of golf, one should not use a mocking tone when offering a sacrifice! Thus ends my parable for the new theology! (Although, it is very much a true story!)
