chriswelch93
Hello Friends, My name is Chris, I'm 24 years old and I am from Albuquerque New Mexico. I always grew up playing golf, since my dad enjoys the game as well, however, it was more of a once per year treat because I was always so busy with other things. I played soccer in college and was still too busy to golf regularly. As my college soccer playing days have ended I was searching for a new hobby to fill some free time. I have decided to play golf more regularly and really try and improve my game. In the past month, I am starting to score below 100 on average which is a huge improvement in my scores (generally was scoring between 110-120 before this summer). I am still playing with a set that was bought for me by my dad when I was around 15-16 years old meaning that although they are still very nice clubs I'm not sure that they necessarily fit where my game is now. So I am definitely interested in reading about different types of clubs that I may look to buy in the future. As far as my swing, I was always taught to try the common misconceptions such as sweeping under my iron shots and to swing super slow with my driver to make sure I hit it consistently. I am just self-taught at this point, never having a swing lesson, and have been just watching youtube as of late to learn more about the anatomy of a good golf swing with the various different clubs. As I have become more consistent with the changes I have made in my swing my ball flight and ability to control the shape of my shots have improved which is exemplified by the improvement in my scores. I hope to keep improving and eventually get my score into the low 80's and 70's on average. Lucky living in New Mexico the weather permits golf year round which is great to keep improving! Cheers in advance for any advice and comments, Chris WITB? revkev
Welcome! Like you I was a college athlete, if you count warming up pitches in the bullpen (which is essentially what I did for two years before mono caused me to quit). Like you had I had dabbled in golf from the time that I was ten onward playing sporadically so long as it didn't get in the way of baseball. Like you I was mainly self taught up until I turned 30. I was able to get down to a solid 3 that way but understand that there are noticeable crossovers between baseball and golf - 100 swings a day against a pitching machine and off a tee helps strengthen the proper muscle groups, it translated well to my golf swing. I can still remember going out with some guys on the golf team and knocking the ball miles past them on the range - they kept telling me I should try out for the team until they saw me on an actual course. That changed though and I got into the mid 70's consistently within two years through self teaching - Nicklaus' "Golf My Way" was my primary text. I also created lots of bad habits that took lots of time to erase as I got older and was no longer athletic enough to support a swing with a big reverse C. That's when I attended a golf school and after than started to work with a teacher on a regular basis. I found it to be much easier that way. You will get tons of advice here, just like on the net. Some will be good, some will be very bad and uninformed. How will you know which is which? The really best move would be to find a good local pro and start working with him or her on your game, But perhaps cost is an issue. If that's the case I would strongly urge that you avoid faddish stuff and focus hard on basics, good grip, set-up, posture, simple swing. There are a few guys here that could give you some sound advice and have been teaching pros in the past, I suspect that this is what they would tell you but I'm not one of them. More than likely you will hear a lot from others who aren't one of them too. Best wishes!
