StrokerAce
Bardle, I'm one of two Android Arccos testers. There have been some serious issues which will be covered in my stage one review. Also, Arccos has admitted they initially designed Arccos for the IOS ecosystem and then to the Android platform. As a result, there is some functionality missing on the Android app versus the iphone app. MDGolfHacker This is absolutely bizarre.... Android has 85 pct market share of the mobile operating system yet Arccos develops their app for the 15 percent of people who use iOS ???? https://www.statista.com/statistics/266136/global-market-share-held-by-smartphone-operating-systems/ Why would they take the smallest market share and develop their core app around that ? As a web developer / IT nerd, It makes even less sense when you consider the fact that most companies of their size use a framework to build and distribute apps via both platforms to ensure stability and features are nearly the same. It makes me pretty angry when I see things like this come up because I know it was just poor project management / lack of industry knowledge from the outset, and now they're in a hole they cant get out of due to new feature roll outs and SDLC issues. If they know whats good for them, they'll invest some dough into the android market. I likely wont ever get arccos until they get the feature set up to snuff. BUT maybe its not as bad I think it is, I will be glued to this thread to find out though. Joyzee10
That is good info to have though. Is there a category to keep those? Knowing those off yardage shots is as,if not more important than s full shot, for me anyways. Sent from a Galaxy far, far away.... no. but it would be a great additional feature. Always tough to make par after a punch out so it would be handy to have a stat to correlate punch out to scoring average. Quote What's In The Bag? HardcoreLooper
Right here's a question for you all. Are there any features of the Arccos system that you love/hate? Features I love: It's basically no-touch. But I would recommend that you keep your score, the number of putts you took and the length of your first putt manually. It doesn't really miss shots (unless you play in the dark - sensors are activated by UV light, who knew?), but it will miss putts and you need a fairly accurate length of first putt to ensure your approach, short game, sand and putting stats are somewhat accurate. Smart distance. I like not needing to manually select shots to omit, like you do with GolfPad GPS. Handicaps and trending for portions of your game. It makes it easy to know what you need to work on (if you can find time to practice). Personal bests. They're not really necessary, but they're fun. Features I hate: Smart Distance. It includes some shots I just can't fathom. I need to get more info on how it selects its shots. I'd love the ability to exclude any shot I feel like. The Android app. It just doesn't have the polish that the iPhone app has. And I hate iPhones. It also lacks social features, and it only has Caddy 1.0. I am glad that it exists to some extent, because I can gather stats if I forget my iPhone at home. If I only had the Android app, I'd probably still love the system, but once you've used the iPhone, it's a much better experience. Inability to mark a shot as a recovery shot. If you hit the ball into the trees and punch out, you cannot mark the punch as a recovery. Arccos tries to use satellite imagery and machine learning to determine if the shot was a recovery shot, and I applaud them for it. But their algorithms are not very good yet. If it guesses incorrectly, it thinks you're in the rough, and it penalizes your recovery shot as though it were a very poorly hit approach. It should penalize your drive. I've recommended that they give users the ability to mark shots as recoveries, and crowd-source the information on where trouble is on the golf course. It's on the feature list, but I don't know when (if) they'll get to it. BUT maybe its not as bad I think it is, I will be glued to this thread to find out though. Bardle - I was client manager for a team that did a year long hybrid mobile app project for a client. We used a framework for that (Ionic), and it was the right tool for the job. The Arccos app does not look like it's using a framework. I get the feeling that it's native mobile, and that they started with iOS because although the market share is smaller, it's much less work trying to develop for a smaller universe of phones. Some things to note about the Android app: I use a cheap Samsung Galaxy J7 (I'm done with flagship phones). My battery life in general is fairly good, and Arccos does not really tax it too badly. The Galaxy S7 has known battery issues, and Arccos makes them 10x worse. For the nuts-and-bolts of tracking your shots, it's fine. It's no worse (and no better) than an iPhone. It's OK as a GPS, but not as responsive as the iPhone app. Calculating a layup yardage takes a significantly long press to switch to that mode. So long that I thought the feature was missing from Android. You only get Caddy 1.0. It does not have social features. The fit and finish isn't nearly as nice. This shouldn't matter, but it kinda does. The iPhone app just looks a little better. Shot editing is basically the same. No better or worse. You cannot share an entire round. Just one hole at a time. GolfPad GPS lets you share the entire round. You must have a phone with a gyroscope to use it. The app senses when you swing (which is why it must be in your front pocket, not strapped to your bag or anything like that). Funny story - I gave Arccos my phone information, and they told me it wouldn't work. So I bought a refurbished iPhone SE from Total Wireless for $100 to use as a dedicate Arccos device (no service, just wifi). Then I downloaded the Arccos app onto my Android phone for grins, and it worked. It turns out that the Verizon version of the J7 has a gyroscope. The SE is actually a very good device for Arccos. It's smaller than my phone, it's very fast, and fits much better into my front pocket. But I don't know that it's worth $100 to me. null
Great stuff looper. Definitely confirmed my suspicions that arccos is basically developing for iPhone and then essentially trying too port over to android. It's a a shame they don't just start fresh so the can co-develop. It's not like the app is doing the heavy lifting. I'd have to guess most of the heavy lifting issues done server side tommc23
HardcoreLooper
Been waiting for this one. Really good group of guys and I'm particularly interested in the arccos sensors and how accurate the testers find things. Also interested to see what ends up being the testers favorite cobra club. I have a hunch it's going to be the fairway wood @jlukes - So far, my favorite club is the 3 wood. Hands down. Pictures are worth a thousand words: 3 wood is dialed in. Driver is problematic. My oldest, however, loves my driver. It spends some quality time in her bag. I'd have to guess most of the heavy lifting issues done server side I have heard that they're making a larger investment in Android development. You just can't successfully ignore that much of the market. But you're right, the back-end should be doing all of the brain work. The app is nothing more than data gathering and data display. Plus displaying some Google/Apple maps imagery and some pretty basic GPS work. They cracked the code with the gen2 sensors and using the mic on the phone instead of Bluetooth. That's probably the toughest part. null 1 Quote What's in the bag: Driver - F8 - Aldila NV Blue 60 ( S ) 3 Wood (13.5*) - 980F 4 Wood (18*) - F8 - Aldila NV Blue 60 ( S ) 3 Hybrid (19*) - RBZ 4i - PW - D7 Forged - Recoil 760 ( S ) 52* - CBX 58* - CBX Full Face 2 Putter - Craz-e Bag - 2.5 (Blue) Ball - AVX Instagram - @hardcorelooper Twitter - @meovino Facebook - mike.eovino
