Now we are talking we need you guys to see if this caddie is any good....I use the 18birdies app and the caddie has helped me with club selection but I dont think it takes into account elevation and wind direction...half the time I feel like the wind is exactly opposite of what it says

All,

Greg from Arccos has been following this thread and has some comments to make on questions asked...

1) Caddie uses wind speed/direction, as well as elevation to provide recommendations. All of those factors run through Microsoft Azure machine learning to spit out the results.

2) I believe you said it (or maybe someone else), but it was correct that loud noises would not affect shot detection, however darkness will as the sensor requires UV light to activate

3) You can let everyone know we are working on two additional solutions to alleviate the phone in pocket requirement 1) Apple watch app to detect shots (likely available later this summer) 2) A small device the size of a tic tac box that can be clipped to a belt or put in your pocket that can detect and record shots and sync to the phone after the round (likely available around the holidays). Also, the small device and watch will continue to be fully automatic same as the phone.

Thanks Greg for the info. Loving the Arccos!

I'd get that too...especially if it actually included tic tacs! That could be the marketing...the power of Microsoft Azure as your caddie, the size of tics tacs (tic tacs included for a limited time...😁😂🤣).

My only issue is that if its gonna be that small, it would need to be very durable. and it would need to have a case to keep it in, in the bag when not in use. On top of that, it would probably need to be trackable. I dont wanna accidentally knock something tic tac sized out of my bag on the golf course and have it be gone forever. The arccos app needs to tell me when its out of range of the sensor during a round. Otherwise I think we'll have lots of stories of it getting lost and it will likely not be cheap to replace. It also needs to remind me when I complete a round to put the sensor back in the case and put it away so I don't forget and have it get washed in the washing machine...Hope your still listening Arccos.  ;)

NFC and Bluetooth has no way to determine what might be a practice swing versus a swing that actually makes contact with the ball.  The sound impact method allows both...you can make as many swings as you want but the one that counts is the one that is recorded.  Plus there's no need to tap the phone or touch the sensor to say yeah, that was the real shot.  I'll forward that questions to our Arccos contact and see what he says.

MDGolfHacker

fair enough...but they could make a very small slim device with a microphone on it that will do virtually the same thing the phone does.

Whooops!  Looks like Arccos is already on this....glad to hear it.

Wonder if you'll be able to attach it to the brim of your hat?

That would be one place I wouldn't worry about it.

In the pocket might be tricky since you are taking ball, marker, tees, etc in and out.

Belt might be fine but if you're in a cart sitting down/standing up could cause it to come loose and fall off.

Arccos takes wind and elevation into account and gives you a true distance plus a "plays like" distance. I have found this to be pretty helpful when I can't make up my mind on club selection. I have been doing my best to trust the system. Seems to be working out well so far. There are a few clubs I haven't hit very much that it doesn't like to recommend. I keep throwing them in to try and average out the data.

It's going to be like having the angel on one shoulder saying "lay up and don't be stupid" and the devil on the other saying "don't be a coward, of course you can carry 280 over a lake into a 30 mile an hour wind"

with A pitching wedge... that how my devil does it..

Are you talking about whether the yardages are the same? That should be a function of GPS resolution on the two devices. That could differ. Or are you talking about different recommendations given the same yardage? That could be interesting. I'll need to play a round with both devices active and see what they say.

I'm curious about the recommendations.  Like you said the GPS can cause different yardages, but if you have the same yardage will the recommendation be different?  Either that will Apple pick up shots better/quicker.  Just curious of any major differences between the 2 platforms.  That would be awesome if you could play a round with both devices!!

If I get the time to play a slow round, where I can take caddie recommendations, I will. No promises, though.

There's quite a few of you using

a very important word in your posts- "trust". You expect a product to deliver on the expectations that it promises. If it does, then you trust this product. It'll be interesting to see this on the Caddy feature that is being discussed.

And if it doesn't,will it be a deal breaker. I assume not since it is a small part of the whole package. I assume.

Again,a great read and thanks guys for your posts.

Yes... "trust" is correct... I trust my 3 hybrid more than my 3 wood but i swear every time i pull up on a shorter par 4 it tells me to bang 3 wood and then hit a 30 yard wedge - i hate that distance lol! MUch more prefer to come in from 80-110

I said I would play the caddie recommendation this week... I want to make a slight tweak to that.

I'll tell ya what I will do, team... I am going to take a screen shot on every tee this Friday of the caddie recommendation. Then, I will play the hole and then I will screen shot the result. Will take me a bit to pull it all together, so be patient!!!

What's the thoughts on that?? I am happy to do some guinea pig work here!!

That's what I tried to do yesterday. Take a screen shot at the tee box of the caddie recommendation, hit the recommended shot, take a screen shot of the approach/second shot, take a screen shot, etc. Very, very bad play really took its toll on me mentally. The caddie had issues which I'll delve into in a later post.

SUNDAY ANNOUNCEMENT - WEEK 4

WEEK 4 CHALLENGES

Forum Members: Best Rickie Fowler Impression

Now we're entering some of the more creative contests for all to enjoy. Everyone knows Rickie Fowler has got some serious style. It's what he built his reputation upon and now YOU get to tap into it. The rules are simple, submit a picture or video of you doing your best Rickie impression and the MGS moderator staff will choose their favorite for Week 4's winner of Puma gear. Photoshop is allowable. Deadline for entry is Sunday at 6pm EST.

Looking a little light on entries. But wait! There's still time!

MaxEntropy is the leader in the clubhouse by virtue of being the only entry but I know we can do better (no offense Max).

Don't forget photo editing is on the table so you don't have to get fully dressed up if you can display a little creativity. Here's a gem from team Rickie last year:

We should have one of the Challenge weeks focusing on the “Caddie”. I have my own issues with it. Seems like the suggested club on the yardage is different than the clubs posted when you engage the “Caddie”. This week is on the Wedges. So if you glance at the app you may get a different suggestion. Why is that?

But, hey, this week the focus is on the Wedges........we need to post about them.

Speaking of that, did any of you get fitted to determine the grind you needed? or did you just choose based on your tendencies and playing conditions?

Well, I first determined the water content in relation to the fairways I typically play in my area, I then determined the amount of sunlight those fairways would get to determine the ambient heat reading to see how the wedge materials would be affected by heat distortion; using a compass, I triangulated the distances i would be hitting those wedges after which, i ran stimp meter readings on a few of the greens to see what kind of impact and spin high towering wedges would have on the shapeshot trajectory I planned to use. I then took the approximate number of days I would be playing, divided by the minimal distance of a lob wedge multiplied by the angle of distortion caused by the curvature of the earth and got my answer...NO.

Speaking of that, did any of you get fitted to determine the grind you needed? or did you just choose based on your tendencies and playing conditions?

Good question Bardle,

There was no “grind” to choose from with the Cobra King F8 wedges. Since I Gamed the F6's(PW/SW/LW) I selected the F8 wedges(PW/GW/SW/LW) to review. Much of the lies around the greens at my club play well with a medium grind so the stick offering suffices.

Hmm so the F8's have wedges included in the iron set that go all the way to 58 or 60? I guess Im just ignorant on this. I checked the site and the F8 set looks to only go through SW. I thought you guys might have been testing the king blacks or something. Did I miss this info somewhere else in the thread?

Couldn't use the reading I had for barometric pressure as I realized my gauge wasn't calibrated properly. Maybe next time 😁

I am using the King Black wedges, I have 2 in 54 and 58*, Versatile grind. I play in the Seattle area where as you all know is kinda wet, but i also play a fair amount in central Washington which is considerably drier.

the 54 is my "sand wedge" and the 58 my Lob.. Lob i'm getting about 75-80 yds and Sw is about 90-100. I love them they both are High launching, land softly and the ball just stick.

As with all of these clubs I feel I can just fire away and know the ball will do what i expect.. These irons are not getting the roll out as my previous clubs did. more often them not they are within a foot or two ( at the most) form where they landed.. I have not had any major spinning back, but i have had a few that did come back a foot or so from the ball mark..

All in all these are great clubs, feel heavier then what I am used to but now that I am getting comfortable they feel great.

As far as wear I am not really noticing  anything that would be a concern. they still look great other then a little dirty..
