Golf Netting/Chipping Targets Idea

I've been looking for a few hitting nets and chipping targets to put into my backyard when I came across just the impact netting.

20ft only being $7.99, I was thinking what's the difference between the manufactured nets and building one from scratch?  Am I missing anything or would it be simple to get some piping from a hardware store and make a cage?  Then you can also do the same thing for chipping target by giving them legs much like a corn hole board to stand.

Yes, you can get some piping from a hardware store and built a net. You just need to design the structure and get the right amount of net. Probably also need to consider the material the pipes are made from, if metal there will be rebound. You can use this blog post as a reference for building a frame and screen. You would just use net and build it out enough to be outside if you plan to use it outdoors.

Just make the frame from PVC pipe and wrap them with pipe insulation so the balls wont rebound back at you.

 

Home Depot or Lowes will hook you up with all the pipe and fittings you can think of.

 

Attach the net with Zip Ties.

 

Half the fun will be making it yourself

I would look at the cost of materials and time investment versus just buying a few $20 nets then make a Go/No Go decision. That's pretty much how I approach most DIY projects.

Be sure and type in your feet in length, the price jumps up quite a bit.

So I built a driving net this year.  Reading posts on this forum, I saw several people recommend using a mesh tarp from Harbor Freight.  I think I spent about $25 on the net. It was 10'X12'.  I purchased 1 1/2" PVC for the frame.  I used 4-10' sticks.  The frame demensions are 8'X8' and had 2' supporting legs from the remnants. I secured the net with zip ties.  I probably spent $50 dollars for the frame.  It works really good as far as I can tell.  Keep your tarp loose, so it absorbs the energy from the ball.  I stand fairly close to the net, (at least closer than the booths at golf shops).  It was a fun little project, and now I can at least hit golf balls regardless of the weather.

How's the durability of the tarp? I was looking at getting a Parbuster Impact Panel (https://www.parbuster.com/collections/golf-impact-panels/products/ultra-duty-delta-impact-panel), but this would be significantly cheaper. I do plan to run netting behind the panel as well as a "just in case" contingency.

It seems to be pretty durable.  Judging by the quality and construction of the tarp, I don't think it will fail without warning.  Sometimes it will retain the shape of the impact within the net.  But if you stretch the tarp with a little tension it will take out those areas.  From the use it has seen, I think it will hold up for years.  I will add that I don't hit a driver in it very much and my ball speeds are fairly low.  I don't know if I would trust it if you're a long drive competitor.

I put a second hanging tarp (4x4) from my first pop up net to take most of the spin from my irons. Easy to replace the small piece and then the net helps with the bulk of the force, but not the friction.
