Hello from the Tampa Florida Area

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone my name is Greg and I live just south of the Tampa Florida area.

I'm about to turn 50 next month and have been playing golf since I was 7 or 8 and learned by reading the Jack Nicklaus book Golf my Way.

In my late 20's and 30's I was an assistant golf pro at several courses in Florida and had a hdcp of 0. Unfortunately I had to grow up and get a real job (The pay isn't great and the last course I was at closed). I have continued to play and or practice as much as life would allow me to with getting married, raising a now 16 year old daughter, job etc and maintain a hdcp of 9.5 which frustrates the heck out of me!!! :-)

I recently starting playing with components that are similar to the cobra F7 one length irons (5-SW) and I have to say that I am very impressed. Yes, I had to adjust my yardages for my short irons (a little more than 10 yards for my SW, GW and PW), but I only lost 4-5 yards with my 5 iron. Even though I lost 4-5 yards with my 5 iron, my dispersion pattern is definitely better.

If anyone is in the area and are looking for recommendations on places to play, feel free to contact me.

Thanks

Welcome!

We will have to play sometime - I'm over in St. Pete.  We have several members that we need to get together once the weather cools off a bit.  Have you ever played my home course, Bayou, over in Largo?

No, I haven't played there and definitely agree there should be a golf outing with fellow members living in the area. I play quite often (7-8am tee times to avoid the lovely summer heat) at Cypress Creek (hidden gem) since I live a little more than a mile from the course. Am looking at a membership at River Hills in Lithia.

River Hills is a sister course to Bayou - I've played there a few times on the reciprocal.  Nice enough track - a little easier to score on.  I play late in the day as my 16 year old daughter has a disability that require my assistance in the morning.  But we can certainly work around that to find a time to play.

Greetings from Tallahassee! If you are ever up here on a Tuesday evening, hit me up, and you can be on my team in our weekly scramble at Golden Eagle. We're about the same age, with the same sort of golf experience. Well, I've never been scratch (4 now), but I am willing to learn. ;)

Next steps to my road to improvement
      Current
Adding the Mizuno MMC FliHi 4 iron to the bag once it comes it to replace my hybrid. The hybrid has too significant of a draw bias, not terrible, but I also draw the ball naturally already, and will probably go in and out of the bag, but I'm looking for better shot shaping with the FliHi and have that 210 to 225 distance into the green and off of the tee. Working on my putting. I'm rolling the ball nicely now with a slightly open stance with my current putter. I have another putter that I can get the ball rolling online, but the pace is off. Future step is to actually get fit for a putter. Working on my natural tempo and swing speed for the driver to have more consistent drives. See below for more info. Next
Driver shaft optimization. Not looking for a new head yet. I like my 2017 M1 460. Interested in the journey of testing some shafts. Right now my shaft is determining what kind of shot I can do. Slower speed and tempo than my natural speed and tempo. This has lead to a great deal of inconsistency of trying to find the "magic speed and tempo" and I know that isn't the way to go. Swing speed training. I'll have multiple shafts at this point so I can game whatever is best fitting me as I go along. And I can always swing a little slower or club down to hit a fairway. Future
Get fitted for a putter > get fitted for a driver/shaft and woods from a high level, reputable company willing to discuss numbers and takes the time and right approach. Open to custom shafts and not just from the OEM cart like at a Golf Galaxy. I have only been fitted to a driver once, but didn't purchase as I did not like the experience, small selection of shafts, and I wasn't swinging my natural speed and tempo like I should have.
