Maltby really upping their game...TS-1 Forged Hollow body Irons

deejaid

Recommended Posts

Maltby is now getting into hollow forged head Players irons with their new TS-1.

https://www.golfworks.com/maltby-ts-1-forged-iron-heads/p/ma0293/

Maltby has always made nice stuff but always looked very “component” to me, just not quite as nice as the big boys. These new TS-1 irons might change that. Very clean, high-end look.

Great looking irons!  I'd definitely would have considered them...if they had also made them in a lefty model...

I've always purcahsed my grips from GolfWorks, so as I've slowly been thinking about replacing my blades (slowly but surely) the TS-1's are a club on my short list. My only real concern with them is if they are too bladey or too close to my Wilson FG100's in peformance or if they have enough forgiveness for my aging swing or not?

Anyone able to chime in with the "forgiveness level" of these verses blades?

@Popeye if you're out there!! I know you just sold a few of these heads recently and a little while back you posted a review on the TS-2's and raved about them.

After the Lynx review is over, I'm seriously considering a hollow filled set like the TS-1's. If you can give an opinion on them VS the DBMs that I play (and know you've played) that would be fantastic. I just don't know if anything can replace my DBMs

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

Not Popeye but someone who has the TE Forged in the bag and has built a demo TS1 and TS2.  Anyway, I am not a particularly high spin player and had better results overall with the TE Forged.  Both the TS irons came out a little lower and hotter than I would like.  The TS 2 was a hair more forgiving on mishits than the TE and the TS 1 a little less.  Both are very nice irons but the TE Forged remain firmly in the bag.

Would love to hear more feedback as well. Debating between TE Forged/DBM, TS2 and PTM Chrome/DBM.

Irons are my weak spot, need as much forgiveness as I can get.

Dang, these are so new, even the Ralph Maltby website (http://ralphmaltby.com/products/heads/) hasn't been updated. I think it's fair to say Maltby "knows a thing or two about a thing or two" concerning golf equipment design.  I like their look; pretty clean and refined.  I think their MMB-17 irons are really nice looking. I'm hoping the folks at Maltby are following the thread and will offer up some sets for either our HitSquad and/or forum members to review 👍.

Not new, they have been out 2+ years. The RalphMaltby website is not regularly (if ever) updated, but golfworks.com is up to date. I have the TS-1s, and they are excellent. Still I have an itch to get the TS-2s as well, but the 1s are doing so well I've avoided another purchase so far.

Sorry I didnt see this till just now. I spent quite a lot of time with TS-1, TS-2 and a TE head when the TS series first came out. In identically shafted clubs I found the TS series, either one to be a better match for my game. I tend to be a digger and with such a low COG with the TE/DBM I hit them far too high and get excessive spin. I also tend to leave them out to the right.
I had a mixed set in play with the TS-1 in PW to 7, TS-2 5,6. My swing was a bit off early in the year,, was all mental and more on that later,, and I just seemed to not be loving what I was getting from the TS-1s. It was more my swing than anything else so I switched out to my MMB BLACKS which I have always done well with. I just felt more at ease with them. I still carry the 5,6 TS-2, but now 6-Gw MMBs. Over the winter I will tinker some more with the TS-1s and try some different shafts. I will probably also add a TS-2 7i to the bag and continue with a mixed set. I prefer the traditional loft progression you get with the MMBs so that's a factor in my decision on what I'm gaming.
I'm sure you are dieing to try a TS compared to your DBMs and I do recommend grabbing one to tinker with.

Here is what I'm dealing with in my game and why I strayed from the TS-1s. All year I had been suffering from a back nine lull in my game. I would swing strongly and aggressively through the ball on the front nine and after the turn start steering the ball. I couldnt seem to shake this trend and switched to the MMBs. Those clubs really penalize a lazy swing. Knowing these clubs were not as forgiving made me make a better swing in the back of my mind,, so it helped my game but didnt cure my back nine ways. After a two week hard look at my game in Tournament play,, back to back pro-ams recently,, I realized what I was doing. On the front side I would be striking the ball well and really make a good move through the ball with a strong finish. A lot of great shots and make a ton of birdies. About at the turn I was tightening up and trying to steer the ball. I would get mentally tired and sort of short circuit when striking the ball. A lack of a good follow through made things worse. Poor contact and erratic flight that had me all around the green. A strong short game made up for sloppy iron play so I could sort of get away with what was happening. In talking with the Pro in the three Pro-ams in a row we broke down what I was doing. He said it was like two different golfers. Why I couldn't see this myself is a damn mystery to me. Just mental break downs late in the round. Anyways.... the TS-1s will get a shot again in the off season.

Hey Popeye64 I knew you were out there somewhere 😋. So exactly to your point, when going through the Lynx Prowler testing, I just couldn't quite find consistency that I was comfortable with. Both distance and disbursement were kind of all over the place. In theory, the Lynx Prowler VT's should have been more forgiving than what I'm used to as that's how they are made. I think that mentally I was giving up too much control to the club thinking it would somehow do the job for me.. WRONG! Once the testing was over, I took one swing with my DBM and my game and confidence were back.

It's funny that when trying out various clubs at PGATSS, it's clubs like the Cobra King Forged MB and Ping Blueprint (basically half-scale versions of most modern clubs) that I have the most success and consistency with. It's a shame that Maltby doesn't have a true MB Blade style club for crazy people like me. IF I were to consider a different set of irons for funzies, I've been looking at either a full bladed set or combo set of older Bridgestone J36's. There are a few guys locally selling complete sets in great shape for sub $200. That in itself might just be worth the price of admission to have an actual set of blades to mess with.

It's funny how that works. Trying to let the club do the work with myself leads to lazy swings that dont compress the ball and poor mechanics. When I know I have an MMB (which is a modern blade with help) I know I cant baby the club and need a good move. My buddy has some of the newer TM clubs which I think are 730s. They are tiny and must be swing like you mean it.. I crush those.. So I fully understand where you are with those.
I think I was truly guilty of that lazy swing with the TS-1 heads. Knowing they had built in help yet I couldnt somehow make my good move through them.

I couldnt pull the MMBs off the Paderson shaft so I just used the DG 105 S that I had around. I played the TS-1 8-G and the TS-2 5-7. I a round of the year at Leather stocking golf course. Conditions were tough with wet fairways, high winds and cold temps. Took a little while for distance control but turned a bogey riddled front into a -3 back nine for a 73. The TS-1s flat out performed. Big difference from the first go around. I swung them aggressively and they really responded.

I was at Golfworks this week and fondled the TS1 and 2s. Super nice looking club. GW firmly believes that these are as good or better than any OEM out there.

When the TS-2 first came out I put them head to head with and identically built P790. The TS-2 had better feel and spun better in the Sim. Had identical ball speed and launch. On the course the TS-2 dropped and stopped on the green while the P790 rolled out the the back of the green over and over. It baffles me why people pay OEM prices when these are so damn good.

Recieved maltby TS1 irons a couple months back.       WOW  love these irons.  If you are looking to get new irons please do yourself a favor and try these.     They may look like muscle back blade but these are not your fathers blades!!     No vibration and mis hits are forgiving.   Like the sound too.     As others have said   (The pics in catalog do not do these justice) They are sleek and sexy if a golf iron can be.     They look as good as any high dollar club out there.    I’ve always had pings.   Been hitting ping I 3 blades until I received these.     Won’t go back.      Bought these without even seeing one in person     Trusted reviews and everyone was right.  Don’t think that if you’re a mid to highly handicap these aren’t for you.     They are!!      I ordered stock tru temper LT shaft R Flex and very satisfied. This quality of clubs for $450 or so.      Unless you just have to have the name do yourself a favor and get these

You know I wish I could delete this maltby bragging center... the maltby website has its own forum where you can brag about how you post in the big boys forums spend no money on clubs or helping this community grow... I don’t see anyone in this thread who donates but all y’all probably are the first people to sign up for any OEM iron set testing opportunity...

Curious why anyone who plays competitive golf does not play maltby irons? I looked up the middle western state Indiana tour clubs in play and did not see any. Also checked some random other tours like the NCAA PGA LPGA Korean Tour PGA Tour Latin America and even checked the championship tour... all added up to zero which is strange if they are such good clubs... also watched happy Gilmore and did not see any there...

I too buy stuff from ikea because I know if it breaks it’s garbage to begin with and cheaper than all you can eat shrimp at red lobster... if you missed the maltby metaphor there is this thing called google... but honestly should probably stop using that too because you find more of you clowns pushing your agenda... I heard you’re local news paper still delivers on Sunday you should probably get off the internet which you think Al Gore invented and read some ink...

Would you like me to send you a demo club? Not sure if you have ever hit a Maltby head but I would be glad to send you one.

Not sure what agenda is going on other than a thread from people who enjoy the clubs they are playing. Plus if you are an aspiring Pro very few of those guys play clubs on their own dime.

You want to send me a demo club... again proves how cheap maltby culture is and is always trying to push the maltby agenda... instead take that money and donate it to my golf spy...  however if you insist I’ll take a maltby what ever with a nippon modus 120TX and be happy to take a video at the range with a trackman... I will also help you get an update on your lime wire account😉...please don’t build it just send components... I know they come with instructions, but those are not needed.

This is an agenda FYI... degrading someone’s purchase and saying next time you would be smarter to buy maltby

Cheap.... me willing to take the time and money to send you a demo club is cheap? Interesting.
I do not have any Modus 120 TX shafts at the shop. So that's out.

Good luck with the off-season.

I had the same reaction when I first sampled the TS-1 7 iron. Paired with a Modus 120 it was easy to flight and did everything I needed out of an iron.  Above all, it felt so good off the face. A forged head with well-engineered forgiveness.

Enjoy them this season and I hope they bring you the same success they brought me as a former competitive golfer, club pro and someone who has played for over 30 years.
