Are you after a look or just the outcome

With all due respect it's foolish to ignore a technology that can help your game. So I've had my swing video taped for lessons and it's been a helpful tool.

 

However we've never looked at the aesthetics of my swing, just positions relative to the ideal. Usually comparing my swing to Brittany Licicome's because I have the drop it inside move like she does.

 

I rarely video my own swing without my teacher because I don't know what I'm doing.

 

That leads to a second point - if it's a mistake to ignore technology it's a bigger one to misuse it - like so many other things in golf I'm sure there are a large number of do it yourselfers out there who video their swings and try to self analyze- that rarely works, very rarely.

 

Which leads to a third point. The fact of the matter is that Jim Fuyk's golf swing is perfectly sound even if it's not aesthetically pleasing to the untrained eye.

 

So every time we have a thread like this one the name of Furyk is invoked and used as an excuse to not consult a pro or take lessons. If Furyk can do it with that swing, so can I, the thought process goes.

 

But Furyk was taught to swing like he does, as was pointed out by an earlier poster, his father is a teaching pro. His swing is sound just different and most of us don't know why. We can't tell the difference between it and Joe Hacker's so we think that they're the same. A trained eye would quickly pick up the differences.

 

Touring pros have teachers, use technology, get fitted, and have been for most of their golfing lives. If there are 800 golfers in the world making their living by playing golf there are 799 who do everything listed above for the 1 who doesn't.

 

I don't know why anyone would care about the aesthetics of their swing over the ball flight. But I don't know why lots of people would do lots of things that are common place among golfers from lack of lessons, lack of practice, to equipment choices to shot selections.

 

So if they are enjoying themselves, that's good enough for me.

I have seen a video of my swing...and I immediately wanted to turn the screen off. I had no idea I made all those movements during my swing.  Most of the time, though, the ball still goes about where I want it to go.  After watching it on video, I knew I couldn't pay much attention to it and instead needed to focus on just getting the right contact and ball flight.  As long as I get that, I'm happy.

I film the occasional range session and I'm not looking for a "golden swing", but I do want my swings to look as close to the same each time. What is changing the most from one swing to another and how can I improve consistency.

I've never taken a video of my swing, but I've seen it a few times when someone did it for various reasons. It isn't a thing of beauty, but it isn't terrible either...lol. I couldn't care less to tell you the truth... it gets me to the green where the real ugliness starts.

For a golfer starting out learning a swing or someone who needs or wants to make a swing change, video is the only way to go.  Without it you will be guessing that what you want to do is what you are actually doing.  Just because you get a certain ball flight, doesn't mean that you arrived at it with a good swing; it could just as easily happened by a combination of swing flaws that when one breaks down, well...

I guess I'm probably just going to echo some sentiments in here, but I would never say no to videoing my swing. If someone with knowledge of the swing thinks that they can help me my breaking down my swing through tape, I'm not going to say no. However, as I've never really taken much in the way of golf instruction, prefering to find my own swing and having an innate feeling of what my swing is supposed to feel like and where I'm getting caught up, I don't think video would help me that much without the help of an instructor to help me overhaul my swing to whatever the optimum positions are for me. 

 

So, I guess the answer is I'm looking more for a feeling in the swing and that the result is repeatable enough to where I feel good about it.

I really didn't want to see my swing until this thread was started, now I'm curious. But, at the end of the day, I want a result, not a pretty look.

I'm with Matt on this one. Who cares what it looks like if it works for you (getting it in the hole in as  fewest strokes as possible ). I think that's a problem with some instructors - they try to change your swing to what the 'book' says vs. getting the best results out of your swing. 

 

On the range I make a mental note of every nuance in the swing sequence that gets me on target then make a written note of what I did.

This debate is very handicap related.Im thinking most golfers that are mid 80 shooters or higher care more about contact than a swing look.Where the better golfer will relate with an eye pleasing swing with better mechanics and fundamentals.And the golfer with better mechanics and fundamentals will shoot lower than a ball flight contact golfer.

I am a low handicap and never cared what my swing looked like.  I know people say I have a nice swing,  but I didn't build the look,  what you see now was based on tweaks to improve contact and sequencing.  Right now I want to improve face control for better contact and ball flight to narrow my dispersion even more.  

 

I would liken it to the argument people make about clubs.  Some want them to look good because it gives them confidence and others aren't that worried about looks,  they want performance.   No answer will be consistent no matter how you slice up the golfers.

As it turns out I just recently took a video of my swing.  A few weeks ago I shot my career round of 79 but the last few rounds I have barely sniffed 90.  Something just seemed off.  I even told my brother in law that it doesn't even feel like a golf swing, it feels like little kid hit ball!  After seeing the video I realized that I had sped up my swing and was coming OTT drastically.  Next time out I remembered to slow myself down and hit the ball much better.  After the round I deleted the video so there was no chance I would get bored and look at it to see if anything else was wrong.

The difference is very, very small. All of the swings will look similar. The main difference would just be; turned the face over some, dipped your head a little more, heel came up a little sooner, etc. I have seen videos where I hit great shots and ones that were terrible shots. No one could tell the difference.

I could care less what my swing looks like. I'm focused on making sure I rotate keep the clubheads outside of the hands on the takeaway instead of getting to far inside and making sure I transfer weight to the front side and rotate the chest thru.

 

I want contact to be as consistent as possible which requires being able to repeat the swing

The one thing I forgot mentioning.The current golf ball helps me swing almost mechanically thought free.When is the last time anyone really hit a monster slice or hook! The ball just doesn't curve as much and works so well on and around the greens.Havent hit a golf ball out of bounds in a few seasons.It seems just about any motion into the strike will produce acceptable results now.The textbook swing isn't needed with today's equipment advances

Outcome, but honestly if the outcome is good, the look is probably good as well. Unless you swing like Furyk and putt like Billy Mayfair. Then no matter what the outcome it never looks good.

I lack flexibility, and because I can't stay in balance lifting my left heel, that's not a crutch to lengthening my backswing.  Despite that, my follow through goes straight up the target line instead of curling behind me and people have said it looks cool. There's nothing resembling a reverse C.   I finish leaning forward a little.

 

I've watched it on tape--remember tape?--and it does look kind of cool.

It doesn't look classic though.
