WardenGolf 26
I have played about 6-7 rounds of golf this year and I have hit my 3-Wood once off the tee. I'm debating if it's time to retire it for now. How often do you use your 3-Wood and is it worth a spot in your bag? 2 Quote Rich Irons: Mizuno MPH-4 (4-PW) Driver: Ping G400 LST Wedges: Cleveland 52, 56, 62 Putter: Rife Orlando, FL

Mr. 82 3,863
I don't carry a 3 wood, because I was too inconsistent with it from the fairway. I switched to a 16.5 degree 4 wood, and tossed both the 3 and 5 wood from the bag. One fairway wood, splitting the difference in loft between the two made the most sense to me. Also, losing 2 fairways woods, and just having one, eliminates a lot of guesswork on those 210+ shots. Before I would get a number and pick between the 3 and 5 wood, not really sure which would be the best club for that shot/distance. With just the 4 wood, I don't even think about it now, and just grab it if the shot is over 210 yards. I can stroke that 4 wood pretty good off of the tee as well. It's sort of my go to club for shots I need to move around a corner, either cut or draw, whereas I am not confident enough with driver to pull off that shot with. Also, before when I had both the 3 and 5 wood, I RARELY hit the 5 wood. If I hit it once every other round it was surprising. And when you don't hit a club very often, the chances of you not hitting it well when you have to only increase exponentially. 1 Quote G400 Driver XR 4 Fairway 16.5° Fli-Hi Utility Iron - 21° G Series 5-9 irons SM7 46°, 50°, 54° & 58° Ghost Spider S putter Nexus Laser Rangefinder Garmin Approach S20 GPS

RickyBobby_PR 5,815
I have a weak 3w at 16.5 that use 2-3 times a round depending on the course. The courses I've been playing lately I've kept it in the bag off the tee because drivers been working and on par 5s where I could use it I've either been at a distance it's not needed or my angle doesn't majesty it an option. palvord 3,565
I use my 3W every round at least 4 times per 9 holes. Either off the tee or on par 5's. I have been able to launch my 3W consistently from the tee and off the deck from various lies. It is probably my favorite long club to use. NiftyNiblick 1,972
If my "woods" have numbers on them, I don't look at them. I have a driver (whether or not it was designed as one), a longer fairway wood, and a more lofted fairway wood. A wooden three-wood was usually 17º....for a long, long time. A metal one can be anything.

Apolloshowl 2,629
3 wood for me is a go to club. Whether it be off the tee or from the fairway it gets regular use. Most the courses I play are not super long and I could get away with no driver. It took a long time to find a 3 wood I love, but now that I have one it's a great weapon in the bag and the only reason its use has settled the last little while is I've been giving the g400 a good spin even on holes where 3 wood would be my normal club to use. Much of it would be course dependent, but I couldn't imagine not having one in my bag now. mooremikea 448
Dropped my 3 wood this year because it was good off the tee but could not hit it from the fairway. Moved to a "strong" 5 16.5 degrees and it is a much more versatile club. It is much easier to hit from the fairway and only a little bit shorter off the tee. 2 Quote Driver - Ping G410 Plus 10.5 - Ping Tour 65 Stiff 4 Wood - Callaway Rogue - Project X Evenflow blue 6.0 Hybrids - Titleist 818 H2 - 3(c-1) and 4(c-4) - Tensei CK Blue 70 stiff Irons - Callaway Apex CF 16 5-AW - True Temper XP 95 Steel Stiff Wedges - Ping Glide 54 SS, 58 TS Putter - Edel e1 Torque balanced Indianapolis 5.5 Index
djahubes 1,261
In the process of dropping the 3w in favor of a 5 dialed down to 16.5. Haven't put through the paces yet, but think it will be more consistent off the deck than my 3w. SteddyGolf 1,880
I use my 3 wood on distances between 210 up to 235. I have no replacement for that gap. Could I replace it with a 5 wood? Yes and that depends on the golf course layout and conditions. Rarely do I play a course where I can get on a par 5 in two so a 5 wood could suffice but if there are tight short par 4s or longer than 225 par 3s then I'll need the 3 wood in my bag. I think the key is to know your distances then play to your average shot and not your best shot. Too often folks will play to their best and rarely do they hit their best (1 out of 10?). With a perfect lie on a great day I could possibly crank a 3 wood 250 yards. That would be my 1 out of 10 shot. Sent from my iPad using MyGolfSpy
