Do you actually use your 3-Wood?

WardenGolf

Recommended Posts

I have played about 6-7 rounds of golf this year and I have hit my 3-Wood once off the tee. I'm debating if it's time to retire it for now. How often do you use your 3-Wood and is it worth a spot in your bag?

I don't carry a 3 wood, because I was too inconsistent with it from the fairway.  I switched to a 16.5 degree 4 wood, and tossed both the 3 and 5 wood from the bag.  One fairway wood, splitting the difference in loft between the two made the most sense to me.  Also, losing 2 fairways woods, and just having one, eliminates a lot of guesswork on those 210+ shots.  Before I would get a number and pick between the 3 and 5 wood, not really sure which would be the best club for that shot/distance.  With just the 4 wood, I don't even think about it now, and just grab it if the shot is over 210 yards.

I can stroke that 4 wood pretty good off of the tee as well.  It's sort of my go to club for shots I need to move around a corner, either cut or draw, whereas I am not confident enough with driver to pull off that shot with.

Also, before when I had both the 3 and 5 wood, I RARELY hit the 5 wood.  If I hit it once every other round it was surprising.  And when you don't hit a club very often, the chances of you not hitting it well when you have to only increase exponentially.

I love my 3W. Use it about twice every 9 holes off the tee + if I'm trying to reach a Par 5 in 2.

So per round I would say about 6-8 times?

Ditto. Lately I've been using my 3W exclusively off the tee as my driver and I got into a fight and I haven't made it to the range yet to knock some sense into it.

I have a weak 3w at 16.5 that use 2-3 times a round depending on the course. The courses I've been playing lately I've kept it in the bag off the tee because drivers been working and on par 5s where I could use it I've either been at a distance it's not needed or my angle doesn't majesty it an option.

It's stays in the bag to an an alternate tee club

I use my 3W every round at least 4 times per 9 holes.  Either off the tee or on par 5's.  I have been able to launch my 3W consistently from the tee and off the deck from various lies.  It is probably my favorite long club to use.

If my "woods" have numbers on them, I don't look at them.

I have a driver (whether or not it was designed as one),  a longer fairway wood,  and a more lofted fairway wood.

A wooden three-wood was usually 17º....for a long, long time.

A metal one can be anything.

I think I've used mine twice all year so far. I've actually been thinking about dropping it and just going driver then Heavenwood.

3 wood for me is a go to club. Whether it be off the tee or from the fairway it gets regular use.

Most the courses I play are not super long and I could get away with no driver.

It took a long time to find a 3 wood I love, but now that I have one it's a great weapon in the bag and the only reason its use has settled the last little while is I've been giving the g400 a good spin even on holes where 3 wood would be my normal club to use.

Much of it would be course dependent, but I couldn't imagine not having one in my bag now.

Dropped my 3 wood this year because it was good off the tee but could not hit it from the fairway.  Moved to a "strong" 5 16.5 degrees and it is a much more versatile club.  It is much easier to hit from the fairway and only a little bit shorter off the tee.

In the process of dropping the 3w in favor of a 5 dialed down to 16.5. Haven't put through the paces yet, but think it will be more consistent off the deck than my 3w. Absolutely love the rogue 3w off the tee, but don't hit it consistently enough off the deck so not used all that much. We'll see how the new club fairs before making a final determination.

I use my 3 wood on distances between 210 up to 235. I have no replacement for that gap. Could I replace it with a 5 wood? Yes and that depends on the golf course layout and conditions. Rarely do I play a course where I can get on a par 5 in two so a 5 wood could suffice but if there are tight short par 4s or longer than 225 par 3s then I'll need the 3 wood in my bag.

I think the key is to know your distances then play to your average shot and not your best shot. Too often folks will play to their best and rarely do they hit their best (1 out of 10?). With a perfect lie on a great day I could possibly crank a 3 wood 250 yards. That would be my 1 out of 10 shot.

I play a 4w that I've gone to off the tee instead of driver lately because I've lost confidence in my driver. Works well on most par 4s. I don't hit it off the deck though. Game just isn't to that point yet where I can or need to go for a par 5 and stick it close

I've had the same 3 wood in the bag for over 15 years but my last few rounds at my new home course I haven't used it once.

I actually just bought a 5 wood to put into play instead as I needed a consistent 225 yard club.

I've really been experimenting lately with my fairway woods/ hybrids set up. Haven't settled on anything yet.

Nope! Mine hasn't come out of the bag in a long time.  I have a 3 wood and 5 wood with the same shaft both G30, and for some reason I am able to hit the 5 wood off the tee or the deck with confidence, and then very consistently shank the 3... Drives me nuts, but for some reason I keep carrying the dumb thing around with me lol

I love Henrick. If I were smart I'd just leave my driver in the car. I carry the Ice Man about 255, and have numerous trajectories with it. Nice firm fairways and the low bullet I could probably stretch 270.

This is why I want a Phrakenwood so bad. Small head 10° of loft and bombs away.

I have it set in the stock setting of 14.5°, could probably take it down to 13° I think it is.

Off the deck I like to fade it.

My money club off the tee for sure.

I have a Cobra F8 3-4 and 5-6 Fairway Woods. I use the 3-4 @ 14.5* on a few par 5's and on #18 tee at my home club. The 5-6 is set at 18.5* and used for approaches at 165 yards. I like both and enjoy having them in my bag.

I'm actually debating on what to do with mine. It recently went on the Disabled List after the shaft busted near the adaptor so that left me with my 5W which I can nearly hit as long and sometimes even better. I actually had a few awesome shots with it last Saturday so the decision to get it fixed may come later rather than sooner. The other kicker for me is that I will may be adding a 4'th wedge potentially so I need to make a decision on what to ditch...Maybe.

I am thinking of replacing my original broken 3W shaft that was mid-flex with a stiff-flex like my driver. If I go this route, it will take some testing to see if it remains and the 5W goes. The 5W BTW had mid-flex also.

Ahhhh, messing with gear is fun...Especially when you get just enough info and experience to be dangerous... ;)

I hit my 3W maybe once a round. It is on the hot seat too. I hit it once off the tee today and it found the fairway..... err the wrong fairway that is.😟 I can hit it off the tee but I would much rather use my 2 iron. I can hit the 2 straighter and the driver more consistently.
