Do you actually use your 3-Wood?

Recommended Posts

I use my 3 wood once or twice a round. My home course doesn't have much length to it, so no need to go off the deck but I will use it on a few holes regularly to put me at my preferred approach distances. I use my 5 wood much more frequently.

I hit mine off the tee, as I don't play many courses where it's needed out of the fairway. As far as I've been hitting it, I'll be using it even more.

Short answer: yes I use it.

Details: it's most important for me on par 5s where I can step on it but if I'm not hitting my driver well it's a club that I know will stay in play 9 of 10 shots. It's also my go to club on first time visits to new courses where I'm not quite sure how driver would work out.

Love my 3 wood! I use it more off the tee than off the deck (since I score better playing short iron + wedge if I'm 250 out rather than trying to put 3 wood on). Any par 5 that I cannot reach in 2, par 4s in the 375-400 range, plus any tight par 4.

I probably have 4 3 woods. Can't hit any of them consistently. Four wood and a couple of hybrids work for me these days.

I retired my 3 wood a month ago. Same thing as you, I would hit it maybe 1 time every other round. Picked up A Srixon U85 2i to replace and love it. It is my need a Fairway club of the tee and my par 5 in 2 club. Can get it 235-245. I was inconsistent with the 3 wood, probably due to lack of use. Very happy with my change.

I need a SLDR Mini 12° or a GBB Mini 12°... yes, a 2 wood. I need one.

Shankster, I would check into the Tour edge exotics 11.5* 3 wood. It will be way better from the tee than those mini drivers for you. And you can probably bet the xcg-5 or xcg-6 for 100 or less. To me those models are the hottter faces from the TEE line of clubs.

Did a quick search on the bay, put in tour edge exotics xcg6 and search.

I use mine about 4-5 times a round. If I'm not hitting the driver well that number will increase.

I use my 3w on the regular. I'm way more consistent with it off the tee than my driver. It's plenty long too, I don't feel like I give up much using it off the tee.

I'd rather hit the 5w from the fairway.

I guess everyone's bag just kind of fits them. Sometimes I wonder why I have a 3w, 5w, and 21* hybrid in my bag. They all serve their purpose though. Depends on the day on what gets pulled out of the bag next.

Yes, I have 3 to 4 holes that I use the 3 Wood off the tee, and I've used it several times lately on a couple of par 5's for the second shot.

I've dropped my 3 Wood. Going with Titleist 915 5 wood adjusted -.75 so effectivey 16*. And then a 3 hybrid - overall much better ball striking. And I can carry extra wedge.

I used to hit it off the deck a lot. But ever since my driver woke up I barely hit it anymore. It's kind of sad because it was so reliable but the driver is king. There's a couple times on par 5s that it comes into play or short par 4s

In the process of dropping the 3w in favor of a 5 dialed down to 16.5. Haven't put through the paces yet, but think it will be more consistent off the deck than my 3w. Absolutely love the rogue 3w off the tee, but don't hit it consistently enough off the deck so not used all that much. We'll see how the new club fairs before making a final determination.

Ok. Played one round with the PXG 5w. Dialed down to 16.5. I'm absolutely impressed by PXG hybrids, Woods, and driver. The hybrid is amongst the best I've ever hit. Absolutely easy to hit. Just a great club. The fairway was equally easy to hit. Only used 3 times, two off the tee once off the deck. Didn't have my Arccos connected so cannot definitely say, but seems like my distance was comparable to the rogue 3w, probably due to a more piercing right to left (assume the x stiff and weight setup dropped the flight). Topped it off the deck. Horrible swing on my final approach of the day.

Driver. Is it better than my Epic, can't say yet but love the feel of the x stiff shaft and seems to tighten up the dispersion.

One regret that I got rid of my GBB mini. It was awesome.

That's what I'm saying! They need to make a 2 wood. Don't call it a dang mini driver. Just call it a 2 wood. 10-12 degrees of loft 43.5" shaft and 250-270cc's of pure rocket launching.

I pulled 3W for 4W years ago and then 4W was ditched for hybrid late 2016

Fluke, really. I had an original Exotics 19° that a friend gave to me years ago, don't remember ever hitting it, maybe at the range, never the course.

Threw it in the bag, teed off on 13 with 4W, great shot. Decided to follow it up with my first swing with the Exotics. It went about 10 yards farther than 4W.

What???

Compared the two over the next few rounds from the tee and the fairway and the results held, I couldn't believe it. Even when distance was similar, the Exotics was easier to hit well.

I've since moved to a 17° Exotics EX9 hybrid, a bit longer, even more forgiving. I'll never go back to 4W as the 17° hybrid is so darn easy to hit and with such consistent results.

Was always very inconsistent with hybrids in the past but the Exotics line was an immediate about-face for me there.
