I am new, I drive and hit my short irons pretty good but long irons and fairway woods are awfull. Should I just keep hacking until I get better or switch to hybrids now?

New golf addict, high handicap but improving weekly. Play 2 times a week and go to the range 2 times a week. Average round is down to 108. Used taylormade irons, Dunlap driver, cheap Ray cook putter. Starting to realize that equipment and balls are starting to make a difference.

Can't hurt to give them a try as long as you don't expect them to be a miracle club. You don't really explain what awful means,  can't get them up in the air,  hooks, slices, other.    I personally love my hybrids but I also can hit long irons and fairway woods.   A big difference between them is the COG location.  Irons are the highest and closest to the face with fairway woods being back and lower.

My hybrids are an important part of my bag. I've got a 19, 22, and 26. Initially I had a tough time hitting them. I took a lesson and now prefer them to long irons.

Ok by awful I hit them both (irons and woods) low and short. I have a pretty slow swing speed. I hit my driver 180 to 220 and pretty straight but get frustrated taking 2 or more to get to the green.

First of all welcome aboard!  Secondly, in my case hybrids are my best friend. Third, take a few lessons and then buy the hybrids.  There are so many choices that it will blow your mind. Most of all just have fun. I was once told that it is not a sin to be bad but it is a sin to bad and slow. Golf on.

Hybrids probably won't fix the short part,  but they could help you get some more elevation.   Good luck in finding something to help,

I have a set of Cleveland Halos...16, 19, 22, 25º...and they're not bad golf clubs at all.

16, 19, and 22 are fairway wood numbers for me, though.

I wouldn't be replacing long irons.

I'd be trying to replicate wood distances with shorter shafts.

As for 25º, that's now a 5-iron loft on new sets.

I've got four iron sets in playable condition with good grips, and their five irons range from 25 to 28º.

They're more lofted on older sets, but on these sets, the 5-iron is the first iron that I can hit consistently.

Where would I put the hybrid?.

Again, they're good clubs.

They needed to come out before those original, orange, TM FireSole Rescues came out---- back when there was some space between a fairway wood and a 5-iron.

Just as long as you don't expect a miracle club a hybrid will do well for you. It will help you launch higher and straighter.

I would recommend a hybrid for your swing speed.

I love my hybrids!   In fact most of my bag is made up of hybrid looking clubs since I'm currently reviewing the Cleveland Launcher HB irons.   Why make golf harder than it already is?   Get you at least one hybrid and give it a try.

Welcome to MGS.

I have seen many golfers succeed with hybrids.  It takes players a little bit to get used to them, but you can enjoy the game of golf with almost any piece of equipment.

As was recommended, get lessons and then see what you like to hit.

I just retired my 4 hybrid and replaced it with a 4 iron. I just had no consistency with it. Hopefully it was just that club, and maybe I'll find one that better suits my game. But for now I'll stick with the iron.

Welcome!  If you want to learn to hit fairway woods and long irons, then practice away.  If you don't have the patience to do that, then throw a few hybrids in the bag.  For most people, they are easier to hit than long irons and gives some people fairways woods distances.

Definitely agree; put some hybrids in the bag. Even if you try to find some used ones at a golf shop. See what you like, what works/doesn't, then pull the $ trigger on some good ones!

I was in your position earlier this year. Got serious about golf last year and slowly been upgrading and putting together my ideal bag.

I struggle with the long irons big time and slowly improving on my woods. After lots of research and consideration, I went with a 4 hybrid and love it. I hit it LONG and straight (tend to slice).

Totally suggest adding one to the bag.
